We used this to boil water. The pot is 8" across the bottom and 10" inches high. Water boiled with the lid on. Once it came to a boil we left the lid off it no longer had bubbles but the water was plenty hot enough to do the job. As many other reviewer have noted, the entire unit gets hot, including the controls. This is also mentioned in the manual. We're satisfied with the unit and gave one to our niece.

Takes a while for the expected “smoke” to burn off. Takes longer to cool vs our old 1200W hot plate. If you’re using this to make popcorn, this plate may be too hot. Weight is heavier than our previous plate, this item being made of cast iron. Boils water great. 7-setting temp control good.
