  • GREAT Bike Rack for RVs w/a Tow vehicle already in the 2" Receiver. Retention Straps are a problem.
This rack worked great on the standard 2" vehicle tow bar on our RV. We have a Jeep 4x4 towed, and two Fat Tire e-bikes we call them our "two-wheeled Jeeps." The Curtis rack clamped-on great, requires a stout push to lock it place firmly (which is good), but be careful when you release it - also had a pull pin safety lock as backup. Curtis thought this rack out well and it's nicely made. Has two clamp locking stabilizing web straps with padded hooks to limit side-to-side rack sway, another thoughtful Curtis touch. The two fold up and over bicycle support bars have cable-theathered push/pull ball-locking pins, another nice touch to prevent losing them. As others have mentioned - the ONLY issue we found to this otherwise well made, and nicely priced clamp-on bike rack is the six multi-looped (6) bicycle cradle retention straps are simply *NOT* pliable/flexible enough to use them. We immediately gave up on them and just use Velcro (hook & loop) type cinch/wrap straps to hold the bikes in the padded bar cradles. You can Buy this Velcro product for $18 on Amazon and cut your own very sturdy custom retention straps (VELCRO Brand - ONE-WRAP Roll, Double-Sided, Self Gripping Multi-Purpose Hook and Loop Tape, Reusable, 45' x 1 1/2" Roll - Black ) and have more than enough left over to handle all your water hoses, extension cords, and tools in your shed, garage, or shop! It is also available at Home Centers at higher cost. ... show more

  • It takes two people to install on your hitch at 1st. the.
The quality of this bike rack is excellent. Heavy duty and rock solid from what I can see. Easily fit two mountain bikes on it. Design is great as well since it sits securely on your hitch. The biggest problem is getting it onto your hitch. I had to remove the hitch from the receiver, slide it onto the shank, and still could not get it to close. Called CURT customer support for assistance; first thing they said was I bet you can’t get it on- yup, they were right! Said it takes two people the 1st few times - yup, they were right: one to pull apart on the arms and a second to push down on the locking arm like you are doing cpr on a gorilla. Yup, they were right! Once you get it on to your hitch everything gets easier but can be a bit tedious. End of day this was EXACTLY the product we wanted and needed. Super sturdy and ready to use once you figure it all out and get it put together. We pulled the front tire off one bike so that we had plenty of ground clearance. Only two bikes on the rack but don’t see why 3 would not fit - may need to make a few adjustments but seems like that is the norm for bike racks AND this one allows you to use your hitch and haul your camper or whatever which was our priority! Price was exceptional for what we received. I will write more after the trip if things change but extremely happy now. The ONLY reason I gave 4 stars is because someone needed to say it is VERY challenging to install in the beginning but that is a good thing in the end - it will not come off! It takes two people and it is work. I even stood on the locking arm and could not get it to lock in place. ... show more

  • Works great for me. Use it on my 1996 4runner and my 1997 ford van.
Just make sure your hitch has enough space past the receiver/bumper for this to clamp on. I have to remove it to open the hatch on my 4runner but that's rare and I can roll the window down to get stuff out. I prefer this over a dedicated hitch mount because it's cheaper and I can still tow my jet ski or camper. I can also mount it to the cargo carrier on the back of my camper. I read the other reviews about the clamp being difficult and other stuff. I found it quite easy to use. Just pay attn, it could pinch you if you put fingers in the wrong place so don't. Also, it has a nice lock loop that's part of the latch body. Not easy to break and I run my bike cable padlock through it and the cable. Works awesome and seems very secure. ... show more

  • Needs refinement
Came with no operating instructions, but after a while you can figure out how to mount/unmount it from your shank. It does snap on/off the shank pretty easy. There are 3 main issues. The rubber saddles that the bike rests on, easily slide around on the support arms and don't lock in place like a Yakima. If you want to position your bike(s) away from your bumper, you'll need a solution. Also, the rubber straps take some effort to secure on the floppy nipples. Lastly, the rack must be removed if you want to open your SUV hatch. FYI, you need 1.5" of exposed shank to clip on the rack. Decided to return it only because I had parts to build a custom bike rack that solves these issues. ... show more

  • Good unit to take bikes whike towing
Nice unit if you are towing - doesn't interfere with the tow bar and lets you take a couple of bikes with you. There is however one negative about this unit The clamping and releasing requires quite a bit of force and the provided instructions are not very clear, however there are some good videos online of how to work it. ... show more

  • Great for RV's that also tow a car... Great for RV's that also tow a car...
As a full-time RV'er, I was looking for a practical product that was reasonably priced with good reviews that told of its sturdiness and quality. Although $70 for this Curt Clamp-On Bike Rack was a little high compared to some other bike rack styles, the fact that it's a clamp on device sold it for me. I have a Class A (Bus style) RV and pull a car behind, so I can't use the 2" receiver for most other bike rack products because the tow bar is already using the receiver. A bike rack on the car I pull would have worked, but I prefer that the bike mount directly behind the RV. One reason was to make it less accessible to thieves, another was I wouldn't have to mess with a rack blocking the car trunk when I'm parked for a while and using the car, a third was I didn't want to be lifting a bike onto the car's roof, and finally I wouldn't have to remove the rack very often if it's on the back of the RV. I was happy to find the Curt Rack is moderately heavily built, and appears that it will stand up to the rigours of riding on the back of a RV for years. And I intend to leave it there for years. At first attempt, I could not get it to close around the exposed area of my standard 2" Blue Ox tow bar but moving it further back on the bar (closer to the receiver) a couple inches made the next attempt successful. It now sits centered at 3&1/2" from the lip of the receiver. The clamping action is very strong and the metal thickness is adequate in my opinion. I don't feel it will turn out to be necessary over the long run to buttress or weld this product to the tow bar as long as it stays as tight as it is now, which I expect, but only traveling will tell the tale. The two stability straps that are attached to the rack as additional bracing seem to be adequate for now but I can see where I'll have to keep an eye on them and replace them when they start to deteriorate. The two sided instruction sheet appears to be for an older model because it's instructions for the latching pin handle are just wrong, plus it gives no instructions on which is the best way to install the rubber mounts (the rubber mounting posts for the straps are at different heights on each of the rubber saddles) or how to get the rubber straps on. I spent more time figuring that out then how to get the rack clamped securely. The rubber mounts have large tabs that the rubber straps have to be stretched over and in my case, I had to and will continue to use a flat head screwdriver. I do not think much of these straps as in cold weather stiffness might cause them to tear or over the long haul in the sun (how much UV resistance?) they might crack and tear with use so I'll be looking for velcro straps I can add later, before one of them breaks at a critical time. I have a dual suspension bike (no cross bar to hang it on most racks) and I can hoist it onto the rack without issue as it is reasonably low to the ground. Then it turns out that the spacing of the rack's arms was perfect so the rubber mounts and straps hold the bike securely and nearly level even though the bar is angled, using the existing cross members on the bike. Although I bought a nice spring loaded Cross-bar, it ended up that I didn't need it. (See pictures). As far as security goes, it does not have a welded bracket to pass a 1/2" diameter steel cable combination lock head through so that's an oversight. The pull handle is soft plastic so that's not usable for security. But there is a place I can put a bar style lock through so that the clamp can't be opened (and the entire bike rack removed) and also I'll use my cable lock around the frame here and there. I only have one bike so have a lot of room but I can see where two bikes would fit easily. Perhaps 3 if you're clever. I think this is a great product for the RV owner who wants to tow a car & also mount their bike to the rear of the RV without having to add a dual receiver. If it doesn't perform adequately over the next few months I will come back and modify my review. ... show more

  • Be Careful if it doesn't fit you'll have to pay to send it back! Be Careful if it doesn't fit you'll have to pay to send it back!
Bought this with a curt 2x2 hitch. The hitch was fine, worked great. The Clamp on bike rack I was sent was defective. With the lack bar locked into place the "clamp" only had 1 5/8 inched of space, not the 2" inches the hitch is supposed to be. See the pic! No way that's going on a 2in by 2in hitch! I tried everything. I'm a big guy (2XLT) and I could get the lock bar to even half way to locked. The product I was sent would not fit on the same brand hitch not matter what. So my wife and I weren't able to take our bikes on our 4th of July campout. Then to add insult to injury I had to pay $12 to send it back. Maybe this is the sort of thing you should find at a local store. ... show more

  • Great bike rack - follow the instructions for pushing down!
Love this thing. Took it with me across the county on vacation. No problems. As noted by some reviewers it is difficult to push do! However you must follow the instructions. You can no pry it apart. It’s impossible. I’m a strong dude and I could not get it to budge. BUT it you press in the middle as indicated by the instructions. It goes down like super smooth, easy and effort. Note. Watch your hands on the release it pops. It will get your hand. Trick. Wear gloves and press one arm with your elbows. Worked for me. Excellent product! ... show more
