  • Still Experimenting
As we consider remodeling our kitchen, we are intrigued by the idea of an induction cooktop instead of a gas range. It's hard to consider not installing gas because we have used gas for decades and really like it. We bought this induction hot plate when it was on sale to see if we might really like to get an induction stove. We haven't done much more than boil water on it at this point, but I must say … it's faster than the electric glass-top range we have; while the surface it still very warm just after turning it off, it's not nearly as hot as electric or even gas. The one thing we don't like is the noise of the fan — while not loud enough to interfere with conversation or music, it's noticeable. Anyway, we're still experimenting. ... show more

  • Good product
This is my first time using induction and I am pleased with this product. Everything cooks quickly and evenly. Only downside is that you can't cook anything too heavy like a big pot of water for a full box of pasta. Have to cook half a box at a time which is fine for a single person.

  • Nice adjunct burner
I recently purchased a new electric smooth top electric range. This replaced a 20 year old smooth top range that had a worn looking cook top. Because I really would like to keep the cook top of the new range looking good, I thought it might be a good idea to buy a portable burner when making messy dishes. I chose this induction model because it matches well with my new range and I already have mostly induction compatible cookware plus the price is relatively reasonable. If you are not sure if your cookware is compatible, hold a magnet on the bottom of the cookware. If the magnet doesn't stick, the cookware will not work with this burner. I don't have any other induction burners to make a direct comparison, so I am rating this on it's own. This is a budget burner, so it doesn't have as wide a range of temperature and power levels as more expensive models, but I don't know if most people really need that. When you first plug this in, the power button blinks continuously and the fan will come on. All of these induction burners have a fan and it is somewhat noisy, but it doesn't bother me while cooking. If you think the noise of a fan might be bothersome, then you might not want to buy an induction type. The cooktop will not function until you place an induction compatible pot, pan or skillet on top. Once your cookware is in place, push the power button. The power button led light will go solid and bring up the six presets on the lcd screen. To select a preset, press the menu button to scroll through the presets. When you reach the preset you want, stop pressing the menu button and that preset will be selected and engage within 5 seconds. If you would rather cook by temperature, just repeatedly select the temperature button until that temperature is displayed on the lcd screen. There are 9 temperature presets and 9 possible power levels. There isn't a dedicated power level button and the only way to choose from power levels 1 to 9 is to first select the Stir-Fry preset which allows you to select any of the power levels. The cons of this burner: When plugged in, but not in use the power button will blink continuously. For that reason I only plug it in when I'm going to use it. Even though this burner has 4 legs, only the 2 on the rear are rubberized on the bottom; the front 2 are just molded plastic which lets the burner slide more easily than I would like. At higher power levels I can hear a high frequency squeal which doesn't really bother me, but some people might find objectionable. When you first push the temp button, the highest setting of 465 is selected. I think it would be better if a lower setting was the default, but not a big deal. On the pro side, I think this is a nice looking burner. It is priced right and provides all of the basic functions that I was looking for. It heats up very quickly and cools down very quickly. Because the glass top isn't directly heated, it is less likely to get burned on messes. It cleans easily. The one thing I don't know about is it's durability, but it does come with a 2 year warranty. So far I like it and am learning the quirks of induction cooking. I would recommend it. ... show more

  • This is awesome!
We were very impressed. We have a kitchenette, so had no stove top. I had learned to adapt with the microwave and the toaster oven, but 2 different hot plates ended up at Goodwill. They were so slow to heat up. This is easy to use with it's built in menu and looks great on the counter. Great product! ... show more

  • works well, heats up stuff very fast
It's great, heats up the metal pots very quickly and evenly. Obviously, will not work with non-metallic containers. My main issue is with the "temperature setting" where you can set the "temperature"... But as other reviewers mentioned, it is not a temperature setting at all, it's simply the power setting but I guess the designers though it would be funny to mark power in "temperature units" instead of power units. My main gripe is that there is not even a "low power" mode, so if you want something to "keep warm", it will burn even if it is set to the lowest power setting. I hooked up a sensor to see what the different settings actually are. Based on the sensor readings, the power from high to low: 1700 W 1600 W 1400 W 1200 W 1000 W 800 W 800 W 800 W 800 W The bottom 4 temperature settings are all 800 Watts, I'm not sure why they bothered to even list them out as separate settings. It might make sense if it uses variable duty cycle, but I didn't see any evidence of that. For the non-technical: 800 W will bring 1 cup of water from room temperature (75F) to boil in about 3 minutes. It's way too high if you're just trying to keep something warm. So, if you're just trying to keep stuff warm, even on the lowest setting it will burn stuff to a crisp. It's a bit noisy when it's running on high power. There's a loud fan on the bottom which seems to be active regardless of how hot the electronics are, and in high power output mode there is a noticeable whine from the electronics. ... show more

  • Disappointed
Impulse sales item, claimed heating power levels that were adjustable when in fact it has so far only been found to draw 700+ watts and 1600+ watts in a way to heat the pan to the desired temperature then cycle off until the pan drops in temperature. This doesn’t work when I expected to run it at 300-500 watts off an inverter. However it does have a power factor of .98. As for cooking, this will heat up my 10” cast iron skillet quicker that a conventional burner and I’m assuming a gas stove can’t be much quicker. Auto off if the pan is removed or wrong pan type, even pans that a magnet will stick to didn’t insure it would work properly. I feel that the power cord is of suitable quality for the unit. The units menu has you scrambling the cycle through the cooking choices once you turn it on. Fairly loud cooling fan, would cause issues in dorm room or if you wanted to keep something warm while watching a quiet tv show. ... show more
