These pencils are so awesome! I love them so much! These pencils and sticks are very dark pitch black charcoal! They're soft, blendable and erasable! You can do whatever you want it with this beautiful set! That I mentioned that they're blendable? Yes, very enjoyable for drawing! I suggest that you sketch first with the natural charcoal vine, then use the pencils and sticks to add tones and values as you need it! You need a good surface, like Strathmore drawing, Bristol vellum smooth surface or any smooth paper you have. I recommend this so much! I have always loved Nero pencils, they are similar to charcoal in blackness but without the mess & much less messy than graphite but also less smudgy so if you like to smudge & blend your drawings these will take a bit more effort. In this set the hard, medium & extra soft pencils give a nice balance in tones for sketching & drawing (Nero's come in extra hard, hard, medium, soft & extra soft). The Nero sticks are great for covering large areas or for rubbings & I found the natural charcoal very smooth compared to other natural charcoal sticks I've used. ... show more

    • Charcoal and graphite?
The pencils feel like a combination of charcoal and graphite. The softer one seems to have more charcoal, and it's darker with less shine, but not like pure charcoal. The feel is smoother than lumograph. The charcoal in this set seems high quality. I recommend.

    • Difficult to blend, limited use, shiny like graphite
I had hoped this set could replace more traditional and messy charcoal, but it is more of an adjunct to it. These pencils and the sticks are good for quick sketching and lighter marks erase well, but trying to get an even expanse of dark value from them is really difficult, they are oil based and they make deep marks that just don't blend well no matter what. I've messed up more than a few pieces now trying to use them beyond tiny details. Also they won't stay sharp so keep the sandpaper ready! If this matters to you they do leave a shine similar to graphite. It is obvious when they are mixed with regular charcoal or pan pastel. I do enjoy using the pencils for sketches, and I love that they are not messy, so I may just limit their use to that. ... show more

Impressed. I like high contrast drawings with black /dark backgrounds. This has made my life much easier! These are oil based pencil. Smudge slightly and are super dark.

    • Great product, poor packaging
This product is excellent. Every Cretacolor product I have purchased is top notch fine arts material. Packaging of these items in the shipping container (a thin paper bag in this case) is ridiculous. These are delicate charcoal or graphite art materials. They appear to have arrived undamaged (other than a small dent I was able to press out in the pencil tin included with the set), but the fact that they are pencils could mean non-visible damage to the leads may still exist. I am not sure if Amazon or a third-party seller is responsible for the shipping packaging, but it is wholly inadequate. The use of thin paper or plastic bags to ship these types of delicate items is totally illogical! I purchased three items together to get overnight shipping, the hope that they would be packaged better, and the likelihood that the distance traveled and shipping transfers required would be minimized. None ended up being the case, since the package didn't make the overnight delivery and was shipped back to an Amazon center before being shipped out again just two hours later. I understand that the shipping bags may help reduce costs and environmental footprint, but certain products should not just be stuffed in a bag if they are delicate. Additional protection should also be used. The number of items I have had to return because of damage of improper shipment packaging has increased greatly over the last few years. I am now not going to be buying delicate items via Amazon moving forward. ... show more
