  • A handy tool when you need to buy something
We subscribe to Consumer Reports. But the individual issues disappear into one nook or cranny or another. This paperback volume that comes out each year is a great resource. It pulls together many of the ratings from the magazine in one place. This year's guide runs the usual gamut--from blu-ray players to dishwashers to home theater to all-in-one printers to automobiles--with many other categories in between. Here are some examples. We are thinking of purchasing a new laptop computer. First, the section in the Guide notes what one should look for (e.g., 11-13 inch model if you'll be carrying it around a lot), what one should avoid, and what one should expect to pay. Then, the ratings by category--11 inch models, 13 inch models, 14 inch models, 15-16 inch models, and 17-18 inch models. For each machine graded, the following factors are described--ergonomics, portability, performance, versatility, display, battery life, weight, processor, and memory. There is also an overall rating of the quality of the laptop as well as the price. With such information, one is that much more of an informed consumer, and that is to the good. My gas grill fell apart this year. So, I am interested in what might be a good replacement. There is a section on exactly this product, so I will use it to help select the replacement. I don't need a large model, so I can skip most of them (and save some money as well). I would probably want a medium size model. I am pleased to note that Char-Broil has a number of grills that rate well (my old grill was a Char-Broil and it did its job well over time; It lasted longer than most of my grills). And so on. The automobile portion of the book is always important to me, since every few years a new car is min order for one or another member of the family. Sometimes, a used car makes sense. And this Guide lays out the best and worst of the used cars, by categories such as sports car, small cars, midsized and large cars, minivans and wagons, midsized and large SUVs, and trucks. Pages 186-187 list "used cars to avoid." At any rate, another year, another useful Consumer Reports annual guide. . . . ... show more

  • Cost way to much for such a small book
I thought I was buying a significant book but it was more like a small magazine. It should have been more like $8.00 . It was embarrassing as it was a gift.

  • Important guide book for purchases you are not knowledgeable about
I have always like consumer reports because they have done the research on so many products I have little or no knowledge about. This book is helpful but definitely too costly.

  • Great guide for major purchases; a family resource
Every year for the past five years or so, someone in my family has purchased the standalone Consumer Reports Buying Guide. And every year the guide is passed around or consulted at family gatherings, since someone in the family is in need of a new fridge, range, microwave, camera, or car. I would consider myself a pretty good judge of things like laptops and SLR cameras, and I try to be a good resource to the rest of my family when I am asked about them--however, there's no way I can test more than a couple different models of each in a given year. This is what makes this guide (and Consumer Reports in general) a godsend. I don't trust the reviews 100% (every reviewer--myself included--is biased somewhat), but I give this guide much more weight than almost anything I see online. Plus, for each product category, there are specific tests and ratings displayed. For example, vacuum cleaners and dishwashers are given ratings for how quiet they are (this is an important consideration for these products), while laptops are given ratings for battery life. Very helpful. I also like how Consumer Reports gives a page or two before each ratings table explaining their testing criteria, changes from last year, and stand-out brands for quality and customer service. Even if you only plan on buying one or two appliances in a given year, this little book is a handy reference. If you don't buy it, make sure someone you know buys it--it's much better than asking the salesperson at the home improvement center, appliance store, or car dealership! ... show more

  • Comsumer Reports Buying Guide 2013
Would of liked more detailed info re: the item. Did not use any other guide. Was helpful in making decision.
