Description

Schumann declared that it was Brahms' destiny to create orchestral works. Although it took the composer fifteen years to finish and present his first symphony, Brahms was quickly hailed as the successor to Beethoven. These transcriptions of the great Romantic classicist's symphonies for piano offer powerful statements of his symphonic style.Affordable and authoritative, this treasury of Brahms' works will enchant intermediate and advanced pianists. It features: Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68 Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73 Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90 Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 98 Read more

  • Very Satisfying Transcriptions
Format: Paperback
I'm a concert pianist and teacher of 45 years. I find these transcriptions true to the scores, surprisingly pianistic and edifying to play. Tremolos are are always unconvincing in orchestral transcriptions but I find that just going for the effect is more satisfying than playing measured quavers. This is how I've endeavored to achieve orchestral power on the piano. That being said, these transcriptions provide a wonderful opportunity for one to experience and interpret these masterpieces. I highly recommend! ... show more

  • piano transcriptions of Brahms' symphonies
Format: Paperback
As previously noted by another reviewer, it's totally inappropriate to omit the name of the transcriber. Apparently, these are by Otto Singer. I have another edition of them and assume that's what they reprinted. Otto Singer made excellent piano transcriptions of many works for orchestra and chamber ensembles. How cheap and ignorant of Dover not to give him credit. Five starts for the transcriptions; zero for the Dover. ... show more

  • A good musical read
Format: Paperback
- The arrangements are challenging, but not unplayable. - The music printing is easily legible. - Good price - Lacking in critical and historical comments

  • Spill stain on book
Format: Paperback
The book itself is fine as far as quality of materials and printing. I gave it 3 stars because it was damaged with what looks as though something was spilled on it causing a stain at the bottom of the cover and several pages and causing the bottom of those pages to crinkle. It wasn’t on any of the music and since it wasn’t a gift, I kept the book. ... show more
