The umbrella comes with a cover. After removing the cover and undoing the Velcro, you can press a button to open the umbrella. Press it again to close (though you still need to push it down toward the handle and wrap the Velcro around it. It works very well. Not only does it protect you from the rain, it also protects you from the sun. It blocks UV light and is a little cooler than with the sunlight shining on you. It is about a foot long when closed. The canopy is about 3-1/2 feet in diameter when open. Very good value for the money.

This appears to be and functions as a regular umbrella. A button opens it, it closes easily, it keeps off rain. But the listing says “compact” umbrella and I foolishly did not check the exact dimensions (which it does have, and they are plausible). I would consider an 8” umbrella compact. I would not consider a 12” umbrella compact. I’m not too disappointed because a spare umbrella is always a good thing, but it does seem a little misleading.

This umbrella is more expensive than the ones I normally buy. I generally keep one in each car door pocket for easy access from the car as well as one or two in the house. I buy the $10 cheapo ones and that is the quality I'm used to. This umbrella beats those cheap ones by soooo much! The frame is much more sturdy feeling, the fabric is much softer and stronger feeling, and the open and close mechanism is so much smoother and quicker. The frames of the cheap umbrellas are generally made of aluminum, and I have to be careful to not bend them when I close them. This frame is made of something much sturdier (states its fiberglass). The fabric feels much thicker and stronger than the others I have too. It is also smoother/softer, though I'm not sure that is much of a selling point in an umbrella. The open and closing mechanism if smooth and quick. It fully opens by easily pressing the button and partially closes using the same method. It is much easier to close vs the others I have that require I push the top down to partially retract them. Overall, I think this umbrella is a good or great buy. Time will tell if the fiberglass holds out well against strong winds. We have plenty of strong winds in Nebraska so I will find out. I'll update this review once I have that information.
