I have three of these. Two are on Vixia HF G50s and one on a Vixia HF-R700. When I first used them, the sound was overpowering and unbearable. However, using the camcorder's internal volume settings, I was able to find the sweet spot. This microphone preforms very well. I don't need/use the gain or low-cut bypass. The wind muff works great and I don't get any undesirable wind noise. The one issue I wish wasn't a factor is the wind muff itself. The thing is more like a lion than a cat. It overhangs and is visible when in use. Solution for me was to (carefully) remove the shock and replace it upside-down, so that the mic is actually above the shock. It is glued on, so you have to pry around carefully, but it is easily doable. I have not noticed any ill effects doing it this way, and it no longer interferes with the shot. I’m using this mic on an outdoor adventurer video rig with DJI osmo pocket and every once in a while get an intermittent very scratchy/clicking type interference. Usually on startup. Aside from that, audio quality is substantially better than the osmo pocket. So far best results have been in +10db mode and with wind using dead cat the plus db mode works well ... show more

I have a YouTube channel "TechSavvyBuyer" and having a high quality shotgun mic is a necessity. My go to mic has always been the Rode VideoMic Go, a $80 microphone that gets the job done well but needs a fair amount of post-processing to get the audio "just right". This microphone is a game changer! It is not only cheaper but it also has a few additional features that I think are totally worth it. Lets take a look at the pro's and cons. PROs: Excellent Build Quality Includes a travel case and wind muff filter (very nice touch and excellent quality - doesnt feel or look cheap at all) Price is perfect Adjustable db level via 2xAAA batteries Mic Sensitivity is perfect for vlogging and YouTubing Low Cut Filter is great! SOUND QUALITY IS FANTASTIC! Cons: 3.5mm cable is built-in. If this gets destroyed or frayed this mic is pretty much useless Batteries required for the mic to work, if you're out of batteries you're out of luck Need to turn the Mic "on" for it to work (i forgot to do this once and shot a whole video without audio - needless to say it was a PIA!) Conclusion: This mic is a solid and totally worth 4 stars. I docked one star because the 3.5mm cable cannot be changed for another and the fact that the mic doesnt work without batteries, compared to the Rode Video Mic Go which doesnt need batteries. The main thing that matters however is the sound quality, which is fantastic! I dont have to do as much post processing with this mic and it has made itself into a solid addition among my camera gear. I'm going to start my review with a qualifier saying that I really enjoy amateur video work but this is the first shotgun microphone I've used. We were at a family reunions and I was excited to use it during a meeting where my grandfather and others shared memories of their parents. I thought it would be great for capturing their noise but not the noise of all the kids. There are two things I realize I did wrong. One, I was too far away from the person speaking. Two, I was not aimed directly at them. That being said, the sound quality is great I just wish there was more of my grandfather's voice and less of the kids on the swings. My situation was also not ideal because there was a building and mountain cliffs helping to echo the sound of the kids playing. Now let me get onto my review. I love the red spring, whatever you call it, that helps avoid movement noise. So much smarter than the little rubber bands that snap and never work that well in the first place! I love the wind Moss. That did get tried in very windy conditions and even though I picked up some kids playing I didn't get any wind noise! I love the universal shoe mount that you can also put on a tripod. the sound quality is great even though the cancellation didn't work as well as I hoped, but I now realize the circumstances weren't perfect. The only other downside is that it uses a three-prong TRS 3.5 mm audio jack, and the camera I use most often, the Sony a6000, doesn't have a microphone in. I would use it with my smartphone but I need a converter to trrs 4 prong. However, most DSLR cameras that have a microphone in Jack will fit this trrs 3-prong audio jack. Great product!
