Description

Come Sundown named as one of Whoopi Goldberg's "Favorite Summer Reads" on ABC's The View and one of NY Post's biggest blockbuster "Whizbang Books" of the summer.A novel of suspense, family ties, and twisted passions from the 1 New York Times bestselling author of The Obsession...The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don’t talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she’s dead. But she isn’t. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose - and her mind has been shattered...When a bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow, it’s the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them. The police suspect Cal, but Bo finds herself trusting him - and turning to him as another woman is murdered and the Longbows are stunned by Alice’s sudden reappearance. The twisted story she has to tell about the past - and the threat that follows in her wake - will test the bonds of this strong family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined. • a good read
At the beginning I thought eh, but as I got into it I couldn't put it down. I love Nora Roberts, she kept me guessing.

  • Maybe the old Nora IS still writing ...
I own every single Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb book - I've been a loyal fan since her very first Harlequin romance. That said, I've been pretty irritated over the last couple of years, because it has seemed to me that she's just gotten lazy, and worse, has been taking her readers for granted - ESPECIALLY with her most recent Cousins O'Dwyer and Guardian trilogies. Wait - I DON'T own every one of her books, because I refused to buy books two and three of the Guardian set, since I'd already "read" them before, just with different titles.. She didn't even bother to tweak the plots for these books - they were just rewrites of the Stars of Mithra and Key trilogies. However, I really really loved last year's The Obsession (5+ stars), and I disagree with the negative reviews of Come Sundown that compare it to Montana Sky. I read Montana Sky when it first came out years ago and several times since, and it's just not as strong a book. Come Sundown is set in the same state, and since it's in Montana of course it's on a ranch - but to me everything about this book is just better. Roberts did a good job of fleshing out the characters, building the settings, secondary characters, and plot. Alice's story was agonizing to read - and it should have been. In fact, my only quarrel and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that Alice isn't angry - based on her character's early temperament, and her horrible horrible losses, I think fury might be the only healthy response. In a way, all of Nora's books are going to be predictable. Don't we read them because we know there'll be an HEA? I love Bodine's family - love that they are strong and successful and not disfunctional because of their family ties. I love that Cal's family are such healthy survivors of trouble. I really hope that Nora will continue to focus on the new, and stop re-writing the old. Meeting a release schedule is no reason to write a weak book - if her font of imagination can't come up with something that isn't a re-write, I strongly suggest she just consider changing the schedule. ... show more

I couldn’t put this book down. It was so on the edge here and there. I cried a few times and smiled a lot. The end was fantastic, didn’t see it coming!

It was hard to put the book down. Stayed up way past my bedtime reading. I will miss all of the “folks” in the book! A sequel would be great!!

  • A page turner with suspense and romance
This book travelled back and forth from darkness to light. It was the light that kept me reading and praying the dark would be vanquished. I can say the light won...but there was still some shadows. The romance was all the sweeter for the dark it overcame. As always, well done Nora Roberts.
