It could have been that my 5yo and 2yo insisted on helping, also could have been due to it also being my first time using any ball winder, but the yarn ball came out a bit messy looking. Have I wound yarn by hand with a nostepin much prettier? Yes. But it took HOURS to do. This took all of 20 minutes. Even winding yarn with the nostepin sloppy style still takes about 45 minutes. So this was definitely much easier and less labor intensive. The yarn skips over every once in a while and it feels like it wobbles which could contribute to the sloppy ball that was made. The table clamp also was useless, at least on the table I was sitting at. I'll have to try it on other tables or counters to see if it works better on other shapes and materials of countertop space. But for the price overall, I can't complain. If I want to wind yarn as part of a living someday, I would invest in a higher rated, more expensive winder that other hard core yarn creators highly recommend. ... show more

I really want to love this winder. It is esthetically pleasing, it winds smoothly and quietly. I love the table clamp is in the front for my needs. However the yarn doesn't form a flat cake that I traditionally thing of. I've included two photos. The individual cake is 2 weight yarn that took me well over an hour to get wound. It's still not the neatest, and it has the apple shape. I know it's hard to tell in photos. The second photo, the green cake is what is traditionally seen for a cake, the other two were made on this winder. The grey is 3 weight, the other two are 4 weight. The seller did answer my question quickly but not with an option I hadnt already tried. I was told to move the yarn guide and it would solve the issue of the yarn popping off the bottom of the cake, therefore elongating it. As you can see, it will eventually get your yarn wound. I myself have wound probably 20 or so skeins of various weights and lengths of yarn and fought it constantly. The ones I did get wound don't stack well. For that reason I am giving this three stars then returning through Amazon. Seller did offer free return and/or replacement. I can't figure out how to privately contact them directly. But that's on amazon, or my missing a link sonewhere. I wouldn't say to not buy this, maybe someone would have better luck and more patience than me. ... show more

When my cheap yarn winder broke, I decided to treat myself and get one of these. I am really disappointed. I put it together and that was pretty simple but, I couldn't get even a 1/4 of a skein to cake properly. It was a disaster. After going through all of the videos on their youtube, I still couldn't get it to work over the timespan of 2 evenings. After re-looking at my order, I realized that there was an extra piece that extended the range of the part with the metal loops to guide the yarn. After I just screwed that part directly to the base, it wound the yarn but, now the base of the cake holder knocks against it every spin. It does not function any other way. The part that clamps it to a surface for stability is also practically useless. It just loosely fits in a hole in the side of the base so, any type of shaking jars it out. Also, the gap between the base of the winder and the block of wood that goes under the surface that you are trying to clamp it to is very narrow. I feel like for the price, it should work smoothly. The only difference between this product and the one I had previously that I purchased for $20 is that this one does have the ability to wind a whole skein and is more aesthetically pleasing. I gave it 2 stars because it technically does function and the wood seems like good quality. I certainly wouldn't recommend it or order from this company again ... show more

The media could not be loaded. First the positive: When properly anchored, the winder yields an even, plump, and very satisfying ball of yarn with no tangles. Win! But... it is not usable if it is not anchored, and it ships with a clamp that is simply terrible. Fortunately I have an industrial clamp, and it *barely* fits without blocking the winding mechanism. So I can make it work. The wheel is wobbly as you spin it (see video). But... now that it's anchored, I am happy with it. I noticed that this product was pretty inexpensive compared to others of this design, so maybe that's why its details are not very well thought out. ... show more
