  • It is a great read for anyone interested into western history
It is a great read for anyone interested into western history, guns and the changing times between the 1870's and 1920's.

  • A Dissent
The consensus of reviewers seems to like this book. I suppose it depends on what you look for. To me, there may be a novel somewhere in this poorly written, disconnected piece of writing, but it isn't worth trying to find it. If the subtitle "The Life and Times of a Gunman" causes you to think you are buying a Western, think again. It is a rambling set of episodes in the life of Bill Buckmesiter from his farm to Little Big Horn, to the streets of Chicago. There is, to my thinking, little plot, poor narration, no story arc, and for action enthusissts, no real action. If what you see in the positive reviewers intrigues you, go for it. If you're looking for a Western, try somewhere else. ... show more

  • Exciting and Action Packed Historical Thriller
This is not a typical "western" story. It is one of those books that you think about when you can't be reading it. The hero is an enigma, but dashing and romantic. Don't misunderstand...this is not a "lite" novel; it is full of historical events with all their complexities, and the author puts history in a perspective that will thrill history buffs and beguile those of us who were turned off of history in grammar school! The title sounds like it's a novel for the guys, but there's plenty for the gals to love, too. ... show more

  • Fiction for nonfiction lovers
I seldom read fiction. Most nonfition reads like a text book. Recently I have discovered that when it is done right, nonfiction can read like literature. I discussed this with a like minded librarian who made an interesting observation. She said that there are true stories so interesting and complicated that an author could't make up a such a story. Usually these books are biographies and autobiographies, but Richard Smelter's book is a rare hybrid. This book gives me the history I crave with an interesting story. ... show more

  • Psychological Thriller/Historical Fiction
This book was not only great historical fiction, but a great study in psychology and moral relativism as well. I couldn't put this book down. One of the best books I have read in the last two years!!

  • Historical Fiction at its Best
A fabulous read intertwining both accurate historical facts and the fictional story of a character that should be considered a hero. The sole upsetting part about this read is that it ended...and with a question I would love to have answered! . I highly recommend this novel.

  • poorly edited, badly written
Disjointed, uninteresting, and poorly edited. Difficult to get through because it was so boring and poorly written. Do not waste your time.

  • Historical Fiction
Not your typical western! This is an interesting, well written character study. I didn't want the story to end! I highly recommend this novel.
