Top Amazon Reviews

  • High-end features, but more budget friendly
Color: Neptune Style: 45qt
Coolers are extremely difficult to review these days because of the HUGE range in prices and quality. On one end, you have coolers like the Igloo Trailmate or the Coleman Classic Series — traditional, blow-molded coolers that looks about the same as what my parents would have used and cost around $50-100 for about 50 quarts of storage. On the other end, you have coolers like the YETI Tundra — ultra-tough, rotomolded coolers that look modern and cost around $300 for 45 quarts of storage. (There are even more expensive models too!) Some of this wide range of prices is the actual cost of better materials, processes, and quality. Some of what drives the pricing is brand image. People are going to prioritize different things in their coolers, so I’ll try to talk about each aspect separately. ** SIZE ** On the exterior, this 45 quart Coleman Pro cooler is 24.5” long, 16.3” wide, and 17.1” deep. That makes it really similar in size to the 45 quart YETI Tundra and most other coolers of a similar capacity. On the interior, this 45 quart Coleman Pro is 18.5” long, 10.9” wide, and a little more than 12.5” deep. Despite the fact that the Coleman Pro and YETI Tundra are both called 45 quart coolers, the Coleman Pro does have larger interior capacity. That might explain why the Coleman Pro claims to hold 74 cans whereas the YETI Tundra claims to hold just 54 cans. Probably the most interesting difference about the Coleman cooler is its depth. It’s more than 1.5” taller than the same size YETI. I suspect this was done for a couple of reasons. First, it can hold a 2 liter bottle upright. Second, it puts the lid at a really comfortable height for an adult to sit on. ** WEIGHT ** This Coleman Pro weighs 19.8 lbs. In contrast, the 45 quart YETI Tundra weighs 24.6 lbs and the 45 quart RTIC Ultra Tough cooler weighs 29.5 lbs. So the Coleman Pro is about 20% lighter than the YETI and 30% lighter than the RTIC. To me, that weight savings matters on a cooler like this. Since it doesn’t have wheels, you’re going to have to carry this cooler by the handles. Saving 5 or 10 pounds of weight will definitely be noticeable! To be clear, this is still a fairly heavy cooler when compared to traditional blow-molded coolers. For example, the 52 quart Coleman Classic weighs just 9.3 lbs. So you’re saving weight, but only when compared to the ultra tough high-end competition. ** DURABILITY ** Since I just got this cooler, I can’t comment too much on real world durability. However, I can say that I’m happy with how they designed the most common failure points of a cooler. Traditionally, the hinges are the first part to break. But in the Coleman Pro, there’s a metal bar that runs all the way across a very robust hinge, most of the length of the cooler. I don’t foresee that breaking easily! The latch also uses a metal hinge and a metal bar to hold the top closed, so I expect that to be very durable too. Finally, the handles appear very sturdy. Only time will tell whether the plastic body scuffs or dents easily, but based on the thickness of the plastic, I’m cautiously optimistic. ** COLD KEEPING ** Without running in-depth tests, it’s hard for me to say what to expect here. Most low end coolers only make a vague promise of keeping your drinks “ice cold” with no promised duration. The RTIC Ultra Tough cooler claims to stay cold for “up to 5 days”. This Coleman Pro cooler claims the same for “up to 4 days”. When I look at the other coolers I own, even my old Igloo MaxCold cooler claims to be a “5 day cooler”. Personally, I doubt whether these ratings mean very much, since they don’t seem to be based on any standard rating process. In practice, much will depend on how cold the cooler is when you start, how much ice you use, whether it stays out in the sun, how much you open the lid, etc. Based on the thickness of the walls alone, I expect this Coleman Pro to perform better than my old coolers. It has more insulation in the walls and a much tighter seal around the lid thanks to its gasket, so I feel confident it will outperform my old coolers. ** CONVENIENCE ** In some ways, the design of the Coleman Pro is greatly simplified vs. traditional models. The lid doesn’t have built-in cupholders or built-in measurements. There are no wheels. However, instead, this cooler has features intended to support more active adventures. For example: - Rubberized feet to prevent slipping around - Slots above the handles where you can tie down the cooler in a boat or truck bed - 2 places where you could add a padlock - Large drain plug It’s not mentioned in the product description here, but there is a notch on the inside where I believe you could insert a divider wall. I haven’t seen these divider walls for sale yet, but hypothetically you could divide 1/3 of the interior from the rest for organization or different ice levels. ** APPEARANCE ** In my opinion, Coleman took a lot of inspiration from YETI and RTIC for the design of this cooler. The plastic is perfectly smooth, not that textured plastic on traditional coolers. The surface looks and feels premium. It comes in two bold colors — Neptune and Blue Sky. To my eye, the result is very nice! It looks sleek, functional, and high-end. Yet it also looks slightly more family-friendly than the options from YETI and RTIC. Competitor coolers sometimes look almost military in design. ** PRICE ** In most ways, this Coleman Pro appears a strong competitor to the high end options from YETI and RTIC. Perhaps less rugged or durable than those rotomolded competitors, but also less heavy. At the same time, it’s priced about $100 less than YETI. If you don’t actually need the ultra-tough design (YETI is literally rated as grizzly bear-proof when using locks!), then Coleman Pro is definitely a more budget-friendly alternative with almost all the same benefits. ... show more

  • Finally, an updated Coleman Cooler!
Color: Neptune Style: 25qt
I like this cooler. It’s like a cross between the heavy roto-molded coolers and the old plastic Colemans with no seals. It’s significantly lighter than the Yeti, and it still keeps ice a long time. I haven’t tested it in summer sun to compare, but I had a mix of cans and bottles in it with a few ice packs, and in 60-degree weather with 40-degree nights, the ice was still half-frozen two weeks later, half of which it was in a mostly-empty cooler. It claims to keep ice up to 3 days. Judging by how it’s been in cool weather, I expect it will be just enough for a Thursday night to Sunday morning campout in midsummer. The shoulder strap is excellent, the pad is long and covers my whole shoulder. That long pad is one of the most comfortable I’ve used, even better than my laptop bag, which also has a long pad. This one is the wrap-around-the-strap kind and I was surprised how much of a difference it makes. The strap uses steel plates that slide thru a slot in the handles to remove. They wrap around the handles when in use and the flat plate keeps the strap from twisting. It’s a very balanced strap system. My lunch cooler is a soft one with a strap on clips, and this cooler carries more comfortably even with double the weight. The clasp shuts and opens easily, it’s light but feels solid. So much easier than a pair of hard rubber locks, even easier than the hinged clasp on the Ninja. Has a satisfying seal when it’s closed, there’s no question that it’s shut all the way tight. The drain is a simple screw cap, no insulation there. It’s tall enough for most bottles and a sturdy seat. Four rubber feet with tread. It wins against the Yeti on price, weight, carry comfort, user experience. Ease of cleaning is about the same. For most situations, I prefer the Coleman. I’m not sure it will take stickers as well, but I’m not planning on covering it. That all-over blue color is such a rich tone, it looks really good with the matte finish. ... show more

  • Tough Cooler
Color: Neptune Style: 55qt Wheeled
This was a big upgrade for me. I've been slogging through desert camping with my 2004 Coleman 5 day cooler for way too long. This ice retention has been great so far. I love that it has a nice seal around the lid. The drain plug is also a nice upgrade. Easy on and off and no worries of it falling off. Rubber tires instead of plastic is a plus. The thing is heavy, but Coleman made integrated handles plus webbed handles. This allows you to carry very comfortably without it wacking your knuckles on bumping against your side. I really like the blue color and its perfect back of your car/truck size. It is a little spendy, but the with the quality, I'm hoping it holds out 20 years like my last one. I would suggest Coleman use much beefier packaging to avoid damages. ... show more
