Description

5.0 hp Outboard Motor with Short Shaft Engineered for lightweight, quiet operation, the Coleman four-stroke outboard motor is ideal for small boats, inflatable boats, or use as an auxiliary trolling motor. The 5-horsepower motor is equipped with a twist-grip throttle and adjustable steering friction for easy maneuverability, along with a reliable TCI ignition system that helps the motor start easily every time. Boaters will love the motor's forward, neutral, and reverse shifting, which is easy and fluid. And you can easily boat through shallow water thanks to the tilt and trim option, which positions the motor at several angles. The motor is made of a high-grade marine aluminum alloy for the ultimate in corrosion protection, and includes a heavy-duty aluminum propeller that holds up to fresh and saltwater alike. To keep the motor running smoothly, Coleman added a thermostat-controlled water-cooling system that maintains a consistent engine temperature, along with a vibration reduction system. Other features include an innovative large recoil wheel, a quiet propeller hub exhaust, an easy-to- monitor oil-level gauge, an ultra-low-emission design, and a safety lanyard/emergency shutoff. CE- and EPA-approved, the Coleman 5-horsepower motor carries a one-year manufacturer's limited warranty. • Not too bad a motor!
Style: 5hp
Alright, Alright, Alright... I was very concerned reading all the reviews about the motor and knew my 1000.00 investment was a crap shoot at best but all other standard 5hp outboards were 1500-2000 dollar range and I was just tired of buying used and spending all my time fixing the darn things instead of being on the water so I thought it was worth a shot. I am happy to say after 5 hours on the water with the thing it worked as designed and worked well. Its absolutely not a bad little motor. I am going to keep it in the garage when not in use mainly cause I don't know how it will wear here with being in the salt air all the time and figure it will help prolong the life a bit. If I get two years of hard use I will be very happy. Now the gotcha's I found. 1) came covered in lubricant as in oil so wasn't sure if the motor had been returned but after using a couple of shop rags got it all cleaned up and figured the fine oil film would be helpful in saltwater environment if it worked ok so let it go. 2) It does come with gear oil in the lower unit (which was not expressly explained in the manual) though it is SUPPOSED to no ship with oil in the case which was true in my case the oil reservoir was empty. Took about 9 ounces of 4 stroke 10w-30 to fill. 3) The cowling is hard to remove over the gas cap and pull handle and found that you had to take off the gas cap to really get the cowling off so that is probably not going to be a good thing if on the water. Bad design on that piece of fluff. 4) It is louder than I thought it would be. My 2 stroke 4hp johnson built in 1989 is a bit quieter I think. 5) almost puts my 9.9ft fiberclass watertender dingly on plane but does do a good job pushing her through water just fine. Gas mileage was pretty good. Ran up 7 miles (14 miles total) and back at 3000rpm and went through about a tank of gas so was pleasantly surprised and will be very happy now to add the external tank. 6) Starting was a bit rough at first but will say they do a decent job of stickers on the throttle to help you start the right way. Took about 5 pulls to start from the first and then after I trailered it with the motor tilted it took about 40 pulls at the boat ramp (typical!! get the thing to ramp and it gets ornery) before I won and it started again. However, I am happy to report that after about 2 miles of running I shut it down and restarted on one pull every time after that. ... show more

  • Great value for the price
Style: 5hp
Hello Reader, This little motor over all is a great value for the price. I bought it to install on a recently purchased 14' Jon boat. The motor pulled us just fine not very fast but fast enough (two big guys 450 total LBS or better). The four stroke motor is great for trolling as slow as you like for as long as you want. No gas & oil mix means no fouling out spark plugs. Reliable-very, was a bit hesitant to shut down motor in fears of hard startup after trolling. no issues to restart at any time, trolling or long halls. Gas sipper, bough a 3 gallon tank went all weekend did not refill, better than 1/3 of tank left. Over all great little motor would rate at all 5 Stars if not for a few setbacks. Setbacks: Control handle is to short from where i sat. Had to get use to steering with one hand on my back. Motor doesn't come with MCO (Manufacture Certificate of Origin) still waiting to hear from Coleman. MCO is needed to title and register the motor that is required in some states. • Have you ever been 2 miles down the river when your motor won't start?
Style: 5hp
I bought this motor in July. I've had it out 4 times now. This motor is so unpredictable. I find myself in the worst possible places when it decides it won't start. It's great when it runs, then all of a sudden shuts off with an ominous puff of smoke - what? I currently can't get it to restart, so I guess I will have to take it to a Coleman Service Center. I'm ready to call this $1100 purchase "water under the bridge" and go back to the 6 horse "Merc" that was on the boat when I bought it. It's 20 years old, but I'll bet it's more dependable ... show more

  • coleman 5 hp outboard motor
Style: 5hp
I looked at this motor at a retail store and after talking to a salesman who was an ex Cat engineer I thought it would be a reliable and reasonably priced alternative to higher priced outboards. Wrong. It is china made junk. First I had to loosen bolts so it would swivel and tilt. Then after reading the poorly scripted manual I put oil and gasoline in. After toting it to my boat and getting it in place I pulled the rope starter several times and it locked up. I then tried to remove the spark plug to reduce compression but found it torqued extremely tight. After using a larger ratchet wrench I finally broke it free. After some disassembly I was able to turn the prop while in gear. I pulled the rope a few times and it locked up again where it would would not turn. At that point I boxed it up for return. There were no problems with Amazon on return policy but I ended up eating over $50 in return shipping charges. This motor makes a better anchor than outboard. I am no fan of products made in China but to have something this defective out of the box is ridiculous. ... show more

  • Good Outboard
Style: 5hp
This is a good little outboard motor. Like another reviewer, we could not get it started on the first day. This is because we did not know about the safety key. It helps to read the manual first. There IS one problem with this motor. If you lay it on its side, it leaks oil like a sieve. In fact, oil pours out. Makes it difficult to transport the motor in the bed of a pickup truck. Other than that, there are no problems. ... show more

Solid motor so far. Itโ€™s a bit of a challenge to find parts for this outboard. Nonetheless itโ€™s solid. Starts on third pull cold, after that it only takes half a pull. Currently trying to find which female fuel line connector fits this model so I can have more than half a gallon of gas in this Update: I was able to find the correct female fuel line connector. This models parts are is similar to Yamahaโ€™a 5 hp F4 outboard. Found a Yamaha one that fits perfect. Updating my review ... show more
