Should I Buy It?

If you're seeking a lightweight, easy-to-assemble tent for casual, fair-weather camping or short outdoor trips with small groups, the Coleman Pop-Up tent is a solid choice. It's great for weekend camping, scouting trips, or backyard sleepovers. Just keep in mind its limitations regarding space and seasonal use. For backpackers or those needing a tent for cooler conditions, it might be worth considering other options.

  • Great Tent with its Limitations
My Coleman Pop-Up just arrived and I have to say I am impressed. After reading all the negative comments about the quality and difficulty putting it away I was skeptical. However, the quality is on par for what it is intended to be, a simple easy overnight fair weather tent for families. As a boy scout leader and life long hiker and camper I have seen all manner of tents over the years (currently have 4) and all in all this is a good option for the novice or family looking for a quick easy solution to camping in a tent. I was looking for a quick easy tent for weekend camping when I cant use my hammock. PROS: Light and easy to put up. (However, not really a hiking tent. Packed, its a large circle that's about 32 inches across.) Everything you need in one package, stakes, rain fly, etc. Good Size for TWO (2) adults or One adult and One child. There is NO WAY you are getting 4 adults into this tent. Maybe 4, 5-10 year olds. Perfect for a couple of Cub Scouts. Lots of ventilation screening. This is most definitely a PRO since condensation at the peak of the tent can be a problem with multiple people in a tent. Free standing, the design allows it to be set up with no need to stake it down to make it stay up. Folds up flat with no bulky bag. CONS: You will need 2 cheap tarps. (One to go under the tent and one to cover the inside on the floor. The floor material is thinner than expected but a tarp covering the floor took care of any concerns I had about tearing the floor from the outside or having a cot rub a hole in the material. ) It is short inside. You will not be standing up inside as an adult but most backpacking tents have his downfall. Addressing Other Negative Comments: Zipper Being Too Tight to Zip- Apparently people are stretching the tent out lengthwise before they put the stakes into the ground. That was the only way I could get any tension in the zipper. Simply open the tent and put the stakes in the ground exactly where the loops end up. Hard To Put Away- It comes with 4 step picture instructions that are simple and easy and in English and Spanish and there are tons of YouTube videos. Posted Comment: " Myself and 4 adult men couldn't get it back in the bag." If you by yourself let alone with 4 other adults cant put this tent back in the bag and cant follow any of these instructions without breaking the poles, you probably should not be out in the woods anyway. If a true emergency were to arise I am pretty sure you're not going to make it home. Quality: Boys and Girls it is a $70 tent, if you're climbing K-12 or camping in the Amazon this is not the tent for you. (I doubt any of the people complaining have the capability to do either anyway) If you're taking the family to the park for the weekend or your younger scouts for an overnight, its perfect. Experienced campers know how to work around these minor shortfalls so see above. In summary, its a great little tent for car camping or quick 2-3 night scout camping. Good for two adults or 4 younger kids. Know its limitations and accept them. Dont wait to set it up for the first time once you're in the woods. Practice makes perfect! Lastly, be careful when opening for the first time, it is under tension! Only let one ring go at a time, otherwise you may get a face full of tent and a fat lip to remind you to be more careful next time. Happy Camping and Leave NO Trace. ... show more

  • Really cool -- and it works!
Color: Green Style: 2-person
This isn't necessarily a 5 star tent in general, but it works exactly as promised and so far (2 weekends) it has performed as expected. And it's cool! Definitely a conversation starter at the campground. :) I bought it after a brand new, but cheap, tent failed. (One of the fiberglass poll broke the first time I tried to pitch it. And it took forever.) So I ordered this one in both the the 4-man size and 2-man size. I ended up using the larger one, so this review is for it, but now I am taking the smaller one on a cross country trip. I've set it up to test and except for the size it works exactly the same. Set-up: Yes it really sets up in seconds. Take it out of the bag and throw it in the air. It comes down ready to go. Just stake in place. I used a ground sheet under it. Total time to spread ground sheet, pitch tent, and pound in the stakes, maybe two minutes, no hassle. I used aluminum three-sided stakes instead of the simpler ones that came with it. The larger one is quite roomy inside but low -- you can't stand up but it's fine for sitting on a mattress. We had a twin air mattress and a "pool" type air mattress and there was plenty of room for gear. The sides are fairly steep so you have a lot of usable floor space. It did not leak in a light rain and was cool and well ventilated, but the weather wasn't very hot. In hot weather I would leave off the rain fly, which blocks a lot of air, and pitch it under a flying tarp. The quality of the materials and workmanship was excellent. It is not as easy to fold up as it is to pitch, but once you get the hang of it, you can yank the stakes, shake it out, fold and put back in the case in 2-3 minutes. You have to fight the coiled poles to bend it down in the right way, then it collapses into a circle and you slip the attached strap around it and you're done. I love that it travels as a flatish circle that will fit behind the seat. The 4-man version makes a 36 inch circle, the smaller one is just under 30 inches. I like to camp light -- no elaborate cooking equipment, no portable shower... so setting up the tent is 80% of making camp. I can set this up, inflate the air mattress, pull out the cooler and a couple of chairs, and be off doing something fun in 10-15 minutes. Heaven! ... show more

  • Incredibly easy to setup - can be frustraiting to take down
Color: Blue Style: 4-person
I really like this tent as its one of the easiest popup tents I've ever put up. Its very lightweight so handing it out of the bag is easy. You quite literally throw it out and you've got a tent. β€’ Very Lightweight *Fits my 6’ self and two older kids with plenty of space left for gear β€’ Easy to put up β€’ 4 person version is truly large inside and has great ventilation This isn’t an easy backpacking tent however, as the carry bag is comically large- albeit flat. If you’re going to hike a short distance to your camp spot it’ll be fine, but I don’t think you’re going to want to go too far with it. This is a warm weather tent, unless you have the appropriate gear for colder nights. The entire top of the tent is ventilated so heat is going to escape. Good for summer – Bad for colder months. My biggest frustration is with getting the tent back to the size to fit in the carry bag. Its really easy to fold-up and lay flat, but to get it to the diameter to fit in the circular bag takes some practice and patience. I haven’t tested its waterproof capabilities, but the construction includes taped seams and there is a removable rainfly for the top. I would expect a light rain would be no issue. ... show more
