if you do not know CNC generates lots of dust, if you are running with a computer with a cooling fan dust will clog and eventually kill it.. The offline controller lets you run CNC jobs without a connected computer.. It may be an additional cost up front, but you do not need to risk your PC or laptop which is much more expensive

Worked wonderfully for my machine, the only issue is that you have to scroll the the picture of a lock and click on it, otherwise you can’t manually Traverse the X,Y, and Z. It doesn’t specifically point this out in the instructions.

Updated: I raised my overall review due to contact from SainSmart. While they offered a full refund without return for the product, there were no conditions attached to that refund. Few sellers are willing to go to that length. Since I am still using, and living with the limitations of this device, I declined the refund. Clunky interface to access features like jogging and other settings. Will prevent or at least interfere with using a USB connection and sender software. If running a job that has bit changes, there appears to be no means of facilitating them during the job run. It pauses, but all controls are disabled. If you have nothing else, it can be worked around by using different jobs for each tool. but it is terribly inconvenient and adds complexity to an already complex device (the CNC router machine itself). I won't buy one again.

First of all installation is easy and it works out of box. Secondly it can pause job which is awesome. I can pause job, turn off Makita and resume in reverse order. Now cons. If you stop job and return to X0Y0 - it does not lift Z axis. IT WILL DESTROY MATERIAL, ROUTER BIT AND PROBABLY BEND Z AXIS IF YOU'RE DEEP ENOUGH INTO MATERIAL. It supports only 8 character paths - so no matter how creative you are in naming your toolpaths - it doesn't matter. You won't see your names there. There is no feed speed control. You are stuck with what you generated in CAM software. There is no touch screen. Navigating through menus takes a while. There is no mounting bracket. Operating this from hand is inconvienient - especially with cable sleeve sticking out from controller.

If your like me and was hoping to use this to run gcode instead of having a dedicated computer to your machine, don't. All this is useful for is jogging the machine. Bonus points for there being ZERO instructions/support in the box or on Sainsmarts website. Hell you can't even change the settings to inches instead of mm. Not sure if I got a bad sd card reader with mine but it would detect that an sd card was installed but wouldn't show any files. Grabbed an old laptop and took the same gcode and it worked fine so waste of $50.

Like others have said, about the only thing it really does is move the spindle around. Disconnected it and connected my laptop up.
