  • This was a fun gift- I really enjoyed it.
My husband got this for me for Christmas because Bob Ross use to come to Muncie, IN to film his painting show there and He knew I was a fan of his fro. It took several days for the thing to sprout. The top of his head was the hardest to grow, but it did grow in well once it sprouted. I tried keeping it filled with water but a lot of it leaked out into the tray everyday so you have to mess a couple times a day with watering it. I was wondering if it would be safe if birds ate the sprouts but there was no information on the website if the sprouts were safe. One person told me the terra cotta pots sometimes were high in lead but I never found out if that was true or urban legend. Anyway My bird didn't eat it. I've replanted the sprouts a few times. It's a cool chia pet! I suggest that you purchase chia seeds from your local health food store. They grow much faster than the seeds that came in the kit! ... show more

  • Happy little chia pet
Anything Bob Ross gets a five star review in my book .

  • A little tricky at first
My daughter specifically asked for this for her 12th birthday. She loves it but there was some trial and error in the beginning before the chia started to grow. They would slide off every day and she'd have to put them back on. She learned that they grew much better if she spritzed the head with water a couple times a day vs filling the head with water to the top. ... show more

  • Helpful tip on the chia pet.
I've always wanted a chia pet and a bob ross chia pet was a dream come true to get on. So I got one for Christmas. It took me a while to start it but as it was snowing a week ago it was the perfect activity to do while your stuck at home. Now there are people who are saying the mix it too watery and wet not gel like. Apparently those people didn't read the tip on the instructions. (As a tip it says to add more seeds wait 10 minutes. And it helps the spread get thicker.) So first when your starting to spread the seeds. Spread it like your spreading icing. Cover the head with plenty of seeds. It says to water it every day. I actually water it one day wait another day then the third day you change the water. Put this head in a deep container. It didn't overflow. But get a deep container. And give it plenty of sunlight. On top of the head take a spray bottle and spray the top of the head. Now i did the beard. So far it looks amazing. So if you want the full look I recommend the hair and the beard. If you follow these instructions it will work. And its exciting to do. Its fun activity to do it takes time but its a plant so be patient and have fun watching the chia pet grow. ... show more

  • rip bob ross
I've always dreamed of having a chia pet since i saw them when i was little and now that I am over 30 I thought I finally deserved one. I received it as a gift on Christmas and was so eager to grow the iconic Ross Fro. How disappointing it was. All the other reviews are right. You have to water it constantly to keep it filled due to the porous terracotta pot, and gravity means water only stays filled at the bottom where there is no hair. The drip tray was not even close to enough to contain the water seeping out through the pot and it was too much work to constantly lift the heavy pot to empty the tray. I ended up using a dish for drip tray instead. The application is pretty difficult for the hair because it keeps sliding down. The best method I found is to mix the chia seeds with minimal water possible, and lay down the bob on his side (any) to apply on one side with a butter knife. Wait til it's dry, rotate to another side, rinse and repeat. After all that work, your cat smashes it by throwing it to the ground. After buying a second one and trying again, it grows great for about 2 seconds before molding and sliming. I tried putting the chia seeds on his bust instead and that worked much better for 2 seconds longer. I also just ended up putting the Bob figurine on the shelf without the seeds. Basically, the design of the hair/chia being on top of a terracotta pot makes it impossible for you to enjoy this chiapet. I look into his eyes and I no longer see joy in them, only insanity. I'm so sad. Bob would've told me that there are no mistakes in this world, only happy accidents. But he is gone and this was a mistake. ... show more

  • Nice for a Bust of Bob, but Literally, Doesn‘t Hold Water
I give it three stars for nailing the likeness, but I‘m pretty bummed about the rest. Everyone in my household was thrilled when they found out I purchased this....until a few days after planting, when we realized that it leaks...it leaks a lot! There‘s a small, hairline crack on the neck of mine below where I need all the water to saturate the clay for the seeds to grow (his head and beard). (SEE PHOTO) Perhaps if you just planted his entire shirt, that would be fine, but what‘s the point? At least for me, I wanted it to look cool! Ok...I‘ll admit, Instagramable. First off, you might want to fill it with water and see if it leaks before you plant. Don’t spend a crazy amount of time, (like me), trying to get all the seeds to stick in all the right places just to find out that to get something broken to work, you‘re going to have to fill it, baste it or spray it with water 1 or more times a day! Secondly, it’s not easy to plant. You can‘t just slather chia seeds on it and hope they‘ll stick in all the right places. (The original chia pet was pretty easy because it was glazed in places you didn‘t want chia seeds to sprout.) This takes some time to get them to stick where you want them too. I used a wooden chopstick that I patted dry between each chia seed placement. (You‘re right, I do have better things to do, but I got a bit obsessed with making it look good.) It‘s a wonderful idea that I absolutely love, but like many other reviewers, I‘m gonna have to say that this product literally doesn‘t hold water. It‘s soooooo disappointing! ... show more
