I had the original Chi and it lasted over 20 years. In fact, it still works, but the plastic on the side of one of the plates broke off when I dropped it, so I was due for a new one. This Chi works even better! Heats in seconds, and I have beautiful curls/waves in just a couple of minutes.

My hair is naturally curly, type 3a to 3b curls. This CHI flat iron heats up really quickly. The digital window makes it easy to choose a temperature. The iron feels very, very smooth when I run my hair through it. It works very well, but I did find that I had to set the temperature a little big higher than I do on my older, salon-level Paul Mitchell straightener. I like that the CHI doesn't have any sharp edges or areas that snag or pull hair. It's comfortable to hold and it feels durable. As you can see in my photo, it did a pretty good job straightening my hair.

CHI is a flat iron brand that I've known to have a great reputation since I was a teenager (a couple decades ago at this point), so I was curious if the new product would stand up to that reputation. So far, I'm happy to report that it does. The design is great and the 'smart' technology that has been added over the plug and play or plug and dial versions of the past is intuitive and easy to use. There is a strip of buttons that are on the inside handle to allow you to set it on specific temperatures or choose a mode for hair type. Despite trying this on both my daughter and myself (I have thick hair and she has coarse curly hair) we preferred the lower temperature (370) designated for 'fine' hair versus the 390 or 425 for thicker hair types because this thing does get HOT. To that end, we weren't always able to get away with the 'one pass' advertised, but that's okay...that was a personal choice. I initially thought the buttons being on the inside of the handle was a bit weird, but I think it is designed that way because you'd end up accidentally pressing buttons if they were on the outside of the handle...and they're easy enough to reach and adjust without touching the plates and risking burns. Among the added 'smart' features is an auto shut off that occurs after an hour of being powered on. As someone who spends more time than I'd like to admit trying to remember things like 'did I lock the door' or 'did I close the garage', I also tend to worry if I've unplugged or turned off hair tools when I use them, so this secondary safety measure is much appreciated for my anxious brain. As far as the overall functionality, my daughter and I are very pleased with this straightener's performance...it is definitely living up to the reputation that I've known CHI to have. When I was a teenager, my hair was WILD and to combat that, I would straighten my hair every day with a lesser quality tool. It was a time consuming and difficult endeavor because the brand I was using required multiple passes the entire way. I probably spent close to an hour straightening my hair. My daughter has a very different hair type than I do and it takes less than 20 minutes to straighten her tightly curled hair. I did find that the ends of her curls took a bit more effort to straighten but that's more the nature of her hair than an issue with the flat iron. We were able to get her hair VERY straight, which is impressive considering how quickly and efficiently I was able to work through her hair. The outcome was beautiful and soft straight hair. I have also used it on my thick, wavy hair and was able to achieve pin straight hair with literally no effort at all. Gone are the hour's long investments in getting my hair straight.
