Having completed a similar project from another manufacturer, I was anticipating the same experience. While this kit is dramatically more difficult, the quality of the parts and how they snap together is superior. The parts are smaller than expected, some the size of sprinkles you'd place on top of cupcakes! With that said, they easily snap together and stay in place, which is essentially if you're layering pieces. I did four layers of pieces (so far) and was thrilled out how they perfectly fit together with no movement. The instruction booklet is 42 pages in length and the size of the box. This is an important detail because it shows the pieces at actually size, so you can lay a piece on the booklet to validate you have the correct piece. Many of the pieces are similar, so being able to match them to the illustrations is essential. Plus, the size of the illustrations makes it easier to figure out where everything pieces together. You definitely need to study the illustrations, taking note of lines -- indicating the sides and rotation of a piece -- and number of raised cylindrical connectors. To make it easier, some of the directions show the placement of pieces as 2- and 3-dimensional. Because the pieces are so itty-bitty, and they snap and STAY together, I found it best to kinda' lay-out a group of pieces, verify they're correct, and then snap them down. I did have to pry off a couple (okay, a dozen or so), using a small, sharp metal skewer. Once you get a feel for the directions, getting the placement of the pieces gets easier! Drawbacks. The bags of pieces aren't labeled, so I had to open three bags to get the parts for the first four pages. Often, you open "bag 1" and use all the parts before opening "bag 2," etc. The pieces are tiny, so this kit is best for an older teen (or adult). I found it best to pick out all the pieces I need for a step, assemble them... and if they don't fit correctly, I know I made a mistake. In summary, the quality of the pieces and instruction booklet are excellent. I'm looking forward to working on the cherry bonsai over the course of the next few weeks, and suspect the final piece will be amazing.

This se is made with mini bricks which are smaller and are incompatible with LEGO. If I had know this (I’d it had been clearly marked in the product description when I ordered) I would not have placed the order. Mini bricks are more frustrating to work with. The design is cute but the building experience was frustrating. I would not order again.

I've had this set for a while and yesterday finally decided to take the time to put it together. I was mostly dreading where I would put it after I completed it, but quickly discovered that my fear was unfounded. This set is much smaller than I had anticipated. I sat down on the couch, determined to finish it in one sitting. Nine hours later, I had to admit defeat to that plan due to practically falling asleep. But I definitely plan to finish it tonight. It's SOOOO cute! For the most part, the pieces fit together snugly. Twice I made a mistake and had to remove a piece that had been seated and it was slightly difficult to remove, but not as bad as Legos can be. The little tiny flowers occasionally didn't fit snugly, but picking a different spot for the flower usually worked. I'm hoping that there are several extras of those, since I'm pretty sure I've lost a few in the murky depths of my couch cushions. The instructions are pretty good. There are some spots that could be clearer, but after puzzling over it a while, then looking forward a step or two, even those spots became clear. I definitely recommend patience when putting this together. I think the most time consuming part of building this set ends up being locating the correct pieces for each step. So, keeping them separated in a logical way would be good. I'm not sure I'd have the patience or space to actually sort them, but I did keep each bag of parts separate, which at least narrowed down the number of parts I was looking through. Overall, I'm quite pleased with this adorable building set.
