abunda_amazon_reviews I’m just getting into smoking my own bbq and I found this smoker very easy to use. I used the minion method with about 5lbs of coal and it produced very consistent heat at about 240 F for 7 hrs. I checked in on the temperature about every hour and didn’t have to change much once I got the temperature i wanted. The thermometer on the lid is pretty accurate in the beginning but starts registering higher temp few hours into cooking. The grommet for digital thermometer is really handy in this case. I closed both vents at the end to put out the coal and there are about 20 briquettes left for next time. Also I used 4 chunks of soaked wood and not all of them burned either. There was consistent smoke throughout and it produced one of the best ribs I’ve tasted. I don’t understand the negative reviews. Honestly, most negative reviews don’t even make any sense. There is some condensation issue like one of the reviews mentioned but I know char broil has really awesome customer service from past experience. The build is very sturdy (minus the loose door handle). I can’t speak for other brands but this one definitely met all my expectations.;;Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2019;;5.0 out of 5 stars;;Consistent temperature and easy to control!;;maninny;;;I worked with Char-broil and I found out that the assembly documentation for 3 components for the grate ring, ash pan and the charcoal grate caused the charcoal to be too close to the water pan. This caused water pan to boil and cause excessive steam and this dripped into the charcoals. Char-broil was able to help resolve the problem. They now have to fix their assembley documentation. The unit is well built and is working as it should. I recommend this product.;;Ray A;;;I selected this as my entry level into the world of charcoal smoking, but was disappointed. While it did produce good results, it was far from “set it, forget it”. I wrestled to keep temps under 300 during 2 different smokes. I started with a small amount of charcoal using the “minion method” with water soaked wood chunks. It did produce great a great thin bluish smoke, but even with the water tray, I could not keep the temp down with both vents almost completely closed. I use a remote thermometer placed at the food grate and did not trust the dome thermometer. I do believe the weather and the thin metal that the smoker is made of factored into the racing temps. That (along with a broken door latch) were the reasons behind returning the smoker. If the smoker was influenced by outside temperatures, I didn’t stand a chance to smoke our Thanksgiving Turkey during the cold Michigan Novemeber, let alone a brisket in January. Along with unreliable temps, the fuel consumption was atrocious. Keep in mind the 20” is very large and will require a lot of fuel to keep constant temps. Refueling for a couple hour smoke was needed. Pros: -Design is similar to some “bullet” or vertical water smokers on the market. -Thermometer probe inlet on side. -Large ash pan. -lightweight -easy access door Cons: -dome thermometer way off -door latch became loose after just a couple opening/close of the door. Required constant tightening during smokes. -Not well insulated -Smoke leaks -Lid does not sit inside smoker body, instead lips over the body causing bad seal. Lastly, please be aware of some of the reviews found online for this product. Most come from individuals that received the product for free and other websites take reviews directly from the manufacturers website. I feel both those types of reviews to be very misleading. This was largely my motivation for purchasing it. Unfortunately, this smoker has a hard time dealing with temperature stability and I ultimately returned it to trade up for a WSM. PROS: - Great price - There is a single bottom vent which is very simple to adjust - The ash tray is easy to get to and dump - I really like the design overall - Customer support was prompt, reasonable, and did accept my return CONS: - Build quality is noticeably lower than other grills I've had, it's thinner, doesn't fit together tightly - Tons of air leaks, virtually every joint leaks smoke, contributing to the biggest issue: - Highly volatile temperature swings, small adjustments can lead to huge jumps - Nearly impossible to keep under 250, probably due to excess O2 from all the leaks - Leaks water out of upper lid joint and door onto ground, making a big greasy mess on floor - Door handle is a thin soft metal, probably aluminum, broke off during 2nd use Summary: Although well-priced and conveniently designed, this smoker has some serious build quality issues resulting in leaks, runaway temperatures, and constant babysitting.;;Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2020;;3.0 out of 5 stars;;Good price but highly unstable temperatures;;rmweston;;;Great classic charcoal bullet smoker, but more heavy duty, smoked 16 lbs, of pork butt and came out great!!! My tip is to mound up charcosl and add about 1/4 cup of odorless lighter fluid to thr middle of the mound. Light and wait until thr flame just goes out. Add soaked wood chunks and assemble the smoker with pan of water (or beer, Apple juice ot your preference) snd adjust temp snd smoke away!!! Charcoal lasts much longer.
