  • Surprise. 5 stars.
I was wary buying this because it was so much cheaper than anywhere else, and there were zero reviews. The Chapin Spreader came new, packaged well, with all the accessories. It did take some time to put together, but the instructions weren't too hard. The only confusing thing was that I was left with a few extra pieces, which is normally a bad thing; but after a few moments I realized that the extra pieces were to switch the auger if you wanted to spread either salt or something softer (I hope). I bought this to replace a Scott's Elite spreader. The difference in quality between the two are night and day, which justifies the difference in price. ... show more

  • Durable and really does the job
It is sturdy, durable and efficient

  • Junk
I’ve been a professional landscaper for over 30 years. Finding a decent fertilizer spreader is like the search for the holy grail. I bought this Chapin hoping it would be the one. 7 months... and very little use later... and it’s ready for landfill. Gears are shot. This is especially frustrating considering what I paid for this spreader. The cheapy Scotts Home Depot spreaders outlast this Chapin. Oh well, note to self not to buy Chapin products... and then continue the search for a real fertilizer spreader. ... show more

  • Nice piece of equipment but better attention to detail needed
Manufacture need to take a look at the assembly instructions and ask themselves if normal people understand this. A bit confusing and very few good visuals. Simple things like pointing out there are two augurs included in the kit and that only one of the augurs should be used. I ended up Calling their customer support line for her to point this out. Additionally, a spacer is needed for the axle as there is entirely too much play with the wheels on. A simple plastic spacer that I made out of a piece of PVC piping did the trick. These are the types of details that you would expect to be right when spending this kind of money. ... show more

  • Leaves too much product in hopper
Assembly was a bear - instructions and pics are poorly devised. With patience, you can get it done. Leave all bolts loose before you lock them down to make sure they’re in the right place and to “square” the spreader while it sits on level ground. Not doing so will frustrate you as unit will sit unevenly and wobble. Set parts up on a large table so you can examine them and make more sense of directions. Parts clearly state “made in China.” However, unit is more robust than some and appears / feels solid. Three piece handle, despite tightened bolts, allows handle to twist as you turn corner. One piece unit is more rigid. Oddly shaped hopper with flat bottom causes fairly large amount of product to remain at end of job which requires jostling the spreader vigorously to ensure complete emptying. Defeats purpose of even distribution. Design also allows uneven pattern for distribution - more product is robustly thrown from left side but right side throws product haphazardly and shorter in radius than right. I had to double back to ensure even distribution. That’s a design flaw. Closed gear box with zerk fitting is a good feature. Handle height was ok for my 6’2” size. Dual plastic screens fall off, jostled over bumpy spots in lawn. Should be secured. Hopper takes full 40 lb bag of product but it’s right to the top. Recommend the 100 lb version to prevent spillage. Had to refill once for my 1/2 acre lawn. Anything approaching an acre or more, would require larger unit or a tow behind design. Wheels are robust and handled bumpy terrain easily - unit is lightweight but distribution is similar to entry level, big box store crap. However, It allows for different length patterns to assist conserving product near walkways or driveways, etc. using yellow doors to mete out product in differing radii or shut off completely. Lever actuated hopper door is smooth and accurate using a rod as opposed to a wire. Wheels are loose side to side, slapping around as you walk. I added two more washers from hardware store - eliminated slop. I recommend the Chapin as it is well made for the price but has some annoying shortcomings that are found on lesser, inexpensive plastic units. It should last a long time, certainly longer than my former $150 Agrifab spreader that had similar issues. I’m debating on returning the Chapin for industry leader Spyker that has reputation for no holds, long term exacting performance. Sometimes you have to spend more to get near flawless operation. ... show more

  • Real nice unit!
Not a ton of experience in landscape equipment but definitely felt like a quality made unit.

  • Product arrived damaged and missing major component
I opened the box - the spreader box is all damages. It is also missing one of the two main frame components so it is not useable. And, Amazon has informed me I must deal with the manufacturer. So not only did I spend a considerable amount of money on what I had hoped would be a quality spreader through Amazon, now i have something that does not work that Amazon does not stand behind so I must waste time with the manufacturer to try to get it resolved. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY
Very difficult to put together, no instructions. Got it together and need to "shake" just to get fertilizer to spread. DEFINITELY not worth 300.00
