🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Champion generator is generally lauded for its performance. Many reviewers appreciate the machine's ability to provide power effectively to various appliances, even when running on eco mode. Notably, users have stated that it functions exceptionally on propane. However, some customers experienced initial difficulties in starting up the generator, though these seem to have been resolved over time.

Pros

  • 🔋 The generator is very powerful and can run large appliances, even in eco mode.
  • 🔇 It operates relatively quietly, which is appreciated by users.
  • 🔄 Repeated usage appears to make the generator easier to start.
  • ⛽ It runs effectively on propane, providing an alternate fuel option.

Cons

  • ⏳ Initial start up can potentially be a struggle, needing patience and knowledge.
  • 🚧 Some users reported receiving their units with cosmetic damage.

Should I Buy It?

Despite the initial struggles some users encountered, the Champion generator's overall performance and functionality make it a worthwhile purchase. It provides power efficiently while remaining relatively silent in operation, and the flexibility in fuel options adds further value. Thus, if one can navigate the initial setup patiently, it would be a good investment.

  • Runs great on propane
I read several reviews of the 2500W duel fual model having issues getting started on Propan. I followed the written instructions for using propane and the generator started on the first pull every time. I completed the ~5hr break in process over 2 days with no issues. I ran varying loads, changing every 15-20 minutes to vary engine speed and load by using several fans and a ceramic heater that had 3 levels of heat. Also you can turn ECO mode on and off to get the generator to run at diffrent RPMS during breakin. It sounds like with ECO mode on, it will only speed up as much as it needs to carry the load, where with ECO off it runs at max RPM and you just hear the engine load up as you add load. I recommend running in ECO mode at first so you get the most RPM changes, especially during the first hour of operation. It is best for beak in of the piston rings to not just run at a constant speed. After changing the oil to synthetic 5W-30 after the break in period I ran it for another hour or two adding more loads and monitoring output voltage, current and frequency. It would handle up to 15A (1800W) steady state load very well, keeping voltage stable at 120VAC and frequency at 60Hz. If you start loading it above 15A to 15.5A the output voltage drops to 110V. It maintains a solid 110V untill you hit the overload at ~17A. The overload was easy to reset once the load was dropped. I was impressed with how the frequency remained stable at 60Hz even when loading it up or when starting a larger load (like refrigerator). It had no issue dealing with startop inrush currents up to 20A. I never experienced an overload when starting anything. My goal is to be able to keep a fridge and some fans, or 1500W heater or small 6000Btu window unit running (each seperate, not at the same time) and this generator did great. At low or minim load this generator is whisper quiet. Even at load it is not exteremely loud. Even at full load with the generator about 20ft from the house, you could barely hear it hum indoors. I measured 59-63dB on the sides and back, 70dB on back (exhaust side) with no load in ECO mode. 69-72dB on sides and front and 73dB on exhaust side with 12A of load and ECO mode off. This generator is working great, appears to be very well made and is meeting all of my needs. 30 day update 03/31/2022. After sitting for a month I did another test run to make sure everything works great before the 30 day return window closed. 3 priming pulls on propane and it fired right up on the first starting pull. Ran great like it did before. I am still very happy with the generator. I will try to remember to add another long term update when I do another maintenance run. ... show more

  • The Whispering Dynamo That Saved My Sanity!
Buckle up, folks, because I've got a tale to tell about the Champion Power Equipment 200961 2500-Watt Dual Fuel Portable Inverter Generator. You know, that mouthful of a name that packs a punch like a heavyweight champ? Well, let me tell you, this ultralight powerhouse is like the ninja of generators – small, stealthy, and surprisingly strong. First off, let's talk about noise. Or rather, the lack thereof! This thing is so quiet; I half expected it to start whispering sweet nothings to me. Seriously, it's quieter than a church mouse doing yoga. You could run this generator in your backyard and your neighbor wouldn't even notice. Well, they might notice the lights on, but they won't hear a peep! Now, onto its magical ability to actually work. It's like this thing was born to power up my world. Whether I needed it for a camping trip, to keep the fridge from turning into a sauna during a power outage, or just for the sheer joy of firing up a mini power plant in my backyard (don't judge, it's oddly satisfying!), this Champion generator stepped up every single time. And it's dual fuel, so it'll happily run on gasoline or propane, making it as flexible as a contortionist at a circus. Oh, did I mention it's ultralight? This thing is lighter than a feather in a helium balloon factory. Carrying it around is easier than lugging a sack of marshmallows. I mean, who needs a gym membership when you can just tote this generator around for your daily exercise? But hey, it's not all rainbows and unicorns. I wish it had a built-in coffee maker and a massage function. Kidding! In all seriousness, this thing is a gem. In conclusion, if you want a generator that's quieter than a sleeping baby, works harder than a beaver building a dam, and is lighter than a featherweight champion, then the Champion Power Equipment 200961 is your knight in shining armor. Trust me, it's a game-changer. Just don't ask it to make you a latte. ... show more

  • So Nice I Bought a Second
This model is my fourth and fifth generator purchase. The third was a gas model Champion similar (and the first a larger tri-fuel generator of a premium brand). I like all three Champions, but sold the gas only model to get this one. The second was a Westinghouse gas model of similar size to these which I returned because it was difficult to start and ran poorly. Dual fuel is a tremendous advantage if you don't keep gasoline in the generator. The maintenance and periodic test runs are greatly reduced. Unfortunately running on propane does produce less power, so that's the downside. Noise-wise, these are reasonable quiet, but not as quiet as the much more expensive premium brands (Honda/Yamaha). Also the noise level increases based on demand, so it can actually be quieter in higher demand situations to run two in parallel. That would also allow you the option to use less fuel during low demand situations by only running one smaller generator. Starting is relatively easy, and much better than a Westinghouse gas only model I bought and returned. Using propane you do need to set it on chock to start when cold. One downside is the propane hose connector seems to be proprietary in that it has a tab that sticks into the generator in addition to the gas connection. I've not tried other connectors, but I assume that tab is necessary for the generator to function. I bring that up because if you have an RV that has a propane outlet you'll need a proper hose because you cannot run these behind two regulators (the one on the RV and the one that comes with this device). ... show more

  • The generator is great. Champion customer support needs improvement The generator is great. Champion customer support needs improvement
5 stars for the generator, itself. It’s great, and absolutely perfect for providing power to Horse Trailer with Living Quarters (microwave, fridge, A/C, etc.). Yes, it does run the A/C, even in ECO mode. It’s also relatively quiet. I’m running it on propane only. Update 8/12/23: I've increased my rating from 3 stars to 4 to acknowledge the effort made by Champion customer service to improve the situation I reported to them. On 8/11, I unexpectedly received the following email from Champion customer service: 8/11 - [From Champion customer service]: "I trust this message finds you in good health. I would like to extend my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience you may have faced due to our recent transition to a new software system. The delays in response and any emails that were inadvertently misplaced during this process are deeply regrettable, and I want to assure you that we are committed to rectifying the situation. I wanted to follow up to ensure that your concerns have been addressed or if you still require assistance from our team. Have you experienced a resolution to the matter you contacted us about? I want to express our gratitude for your patience and understanding during this transitional phase. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we continue to enhance our systems and procedures to ensure a seamless experience for all our customers. Please rest assured that your satisfaction remains our top priority. If you need any further assistance, have additional questions, or require support in any other area, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Our dedicated team is here to serve you and provide the necessary assistance." 8/11 - [From me]: "Thank you for the response. To be honest, I had given up on trying to resolve the issue through Champion, so I contacted Amazon and they immediately sent me a replacement. As I stated on 7/24, I planned to write a thorough review of the situation on Amazon, which I did on 8/4 (copied below). I did modify it from what I said I was going to post, in order to account for circumstances that changed. I am in the customer service business as well, so I can certainly understand the challenges of transitioning to new software systems, but the problem is, no one EVER mentioned that up until now. So, either the people responding to customer emails didn't know that change was happening (which I doubt), or they simply didn't think it was relevant to share. To that point, had I known, I could have been a little more understanding of the situation. I will consider updating my review to include your response, but it is only due to Amazon that this issue was resolved." 8/11 - [From Champion]: "To make up for our error, we would like to offer you spare maintenance parts and a storage cover if you don't have one already?" 8/11- [Me]: "I appreciate the gesture and will accept your offer. As I always try to be fair and balanced in my online reviews, I will update my posting to acknowledge your communication and support." 8/11 - [Champion]: "We're pleased to hear that you appreciate our efforts to resolve the inconvenience you encountered. Your satisfaction is of utmost importance to us, and we're committed to ensuring that you receive the support you deserve. We're glad to inform you that we've already processed an order for spare maintenance parts and a storage cover as a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience you've experienced. Rest assured that these items will be on their way to you shortly. Your willingness to recognize our communication and support in your online reviews means a lot to us. We strive to maintain transparency and uphold our commitment to providing exceptional service, even in challenging situations. Your feedback is valuable, and your acknowledgment will certainly go a long way in reflecting the dedication of our team. If you have any further questions, require assistance, or simply want to share your thoughts, feel free to reach out. We're here to ensure that your experience remains positive and satisfying." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, although Champion had gone completely silent for over 3weeks, I will give them credit for re-establishing communication, explaining what happened, and making an effort to improve the situation. I can't quite go to 5 stars because they really should have offered to replace the generator when I first contacted them, and the wait time for phone callers really needs to be addressed, but at least they're saying all the right things now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is my original review: Now the bad news. I received this generator on 7/16. When I unboxed it, there was a noticeable crack in the case (see photos). There was a flyer in the box that said in all caps, “DO NOT RETURN THIS PRODUCT TO THE STORE. WE ARE HERE TO HELP.” Ok, that’s fine, so I proceeded as instructed. I first tried calling the Technical Support Team (twice) at the number provided. That was not successful, so I then went to their website and sent an email (twice) to the address provided. What follows is the exact exchange I had with the support team. 7/19 - [From me, after getting no responses to 2 calls and 2 emails]: “I'm extremely disappointed in Champion's customer support. I tried calling the customer service number twice, and the wait time was always over 1.5 hours. Who can realistically wait that long for someone to pick up the phone? It would be nice to at least be able to give a callback number. I also tried sending an email 2 days ago, and have not even received an acknowledgement, much less a response. This is my second attempt at email, as I'm trying to get help with a generator that was shipped to me with a cracked case. I like Champion products (this is my 3rd Champion generator), but if this is the level of support that I can expect, I will not continue to buy from Champion in the future, nor recommend them to others.” 7/19 - [From Champion]: “We apologize for the delayed response and we are sorry to hear you received your unit damaged. Can you please provide a copy of the receipt and photos of the damage?” 7/19 - [From me]: "Thank you for the response. I've attached a copy of the receipt and photos of the damage." 7/19 – [From Champion]: “Thank you for providing the requested information, the damage looks to only be cosmetic. We can send you a storage cover if you are ok with staying with the generator in its current condition.” 7/19- [From me]: “Although the damage appears to only be cosmetic, there is no way I can know for sure unless I power it up. Even if it works, there is also no way to know if that crack will spread over time, or if there is other physical damage that isn't currently apparent, or if there is other related latent mechanical damage that will only show up over time. In general, I would say the expectation of anyone buying a new generator, or anything else for that matter, is that it is in new condition and free of physical and mechanical defects. “ 7/21 – [From me, after waiting 2 days for a response to my prior email]: “It's really disappointing that I even have to ask this, but does the absence of a response to my last email mean that Champion will not replace the damaged generator that I received?” As of 8/4, I still have not received any response from Champion since 7/19. It’s pretty clear that they have no interest in helping me resolve this issue and have just decided to ignore me and hope I will go away. I’d hate to think what will happen if I ever have a functional problem with the generator. Out of utter frustration with Champion, I had previously tried to return the generator to Amazon, but the normal return options weren’t available on the website. As a last gasp desperate attempt to resolve this issue, on 7/25 I navigated my way through Amazon’s website and was able to establish a chat with a customer service associate. I explained the situation in just a couple of sentences, and they immediately responded that they would send me a replacement. That was awesome, and I give Amazon customer support 5 stars for that response! As far as Champion is concerned, although I like their products, this experience with customer support gets 0 stars and makes me very reluctant to consider buying something from them or even recommending them to anyone in the future. ... show more

  • So far so good.
Update: Had our first power outage since purchasing this generator. Have not cranked it up since break-in. This time it actually started easier than during break-in. Maybe the 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil helped. I connected the propane tank and turned the dial to choke. Pulled the cord quickly 5 times and smelled propane. (This is good since To indicated that the propane has reached the carburetor). Switched the dial to propane and it started first pull. The generator ran for 6 hours powering the security system, one lamp, an LED TV and sound system, cable box and modem, router, computer and monitor, and refrigerator. No problems. The oil level after six hours was unchanged. Again, so far so good. 2500 dual fuel portable generator. Today I ran through the break in schedule with a few modifications. A total of six hours on propane. I was expecting a significant amount of metal debris but I was pleasantly surprised. Here was my break-in schedule and results: After adding the included 10W-30 conventional oil, I ran the generator for one hour (after I got it started. More on that later.) alternating between no load and 1/4 load after running on no load for the first 15 minutes. When I emptied the oil, it looked very clean with only a small amount of VERY fine metal dust on the tip of the magnetic dipstick that I had purchased for this generator. I added fresh conventional 10W-30 oil and ran it for two hours alternating between no load, 1/4 load, and 1/3 load. Again emptied the oil. It was still only slightly dirtier than the first change and again only a small amount of metal dust. I added fresh 10W-30 again and ran the generator for three hours alternating between no load, 1/4 load, and 1/2 load. I then drained the oil again. It was considerably dirtier than before but little observable metal debris. Finally I filled the generator with 5W-30 full synthetic oil and ran the generator at 1,500 watts for 30 minutes. No problem. My break in schedule was a little work but I think it will make a difference in performance and longevity in the long run. While maybe a little overkill, for a $6.00 quart of oil and a little time, it was worth it to me. During all the break in, I used the ECO mode for up to 1/3 load and then ran on full throttle for 1/2 load or higher. It ran smoothly in both settings. There was very little oil usage during the break in runs. So far I am very satisfied with this generator so far. I can’t speak to long term reliability. Now to starting: The temp was 75 to 86 degrees with moderately low humidity during the break in period. You will read a number of comments about difficulty in starting the generator on propane and ways to help. They are mostly right except the generator WILL start with a little patience and some elbow grease. After starting the generator for the first time, it was very easy to start after that. Getting it primed is the issue. Some folks indicated that they usually started the generator first on gasoline, then switched to propane. I’m sure this would work but I am trying to use only propane except in an emergency for obvious reasons (No treating the gas then draining before storage. I know first hand how quickly a carburetor can gum up.) I also considered giving the air intake a little spritz of starting fluid but decided against that. Maybe in very cold weather. I’ll have to do some research on that. The trick is to get the propane out of the tank, through the regulator and hose, and into the carburetor. With the dial set on choke I pulled the rope about six times then turned it to propane-nothing. Back to choke and pulled it another six times. This time it fired up after three pulls when I turned to propane. After that when the engine was warm, it started on one or two pulls without choking. I’m a little tired but satisfied. I will have to see how it goes in cold weather. By the way —I’m 76 years old and in terrible shape. If I can start it, most anyone should be able to. Misc: For load testing I used an oil filled type radiator space heater. It allowed settings for 600W, 900W, and 1,500W. I only plan to run the generator continuously on up too 1,500W so these settings were close enough and didn’t require me to keep changing appliances. The generator does not have an hour meter but there is a place inside the service cover that looks like it was made for one. Following the advice of another reviewer, I bought a cheap induction meter on Amazon (Magicalmai) and used a couple of zip ties to secure it in the place I mentioned before. No drilling. Works great. Be sure to wrap the induction wire at least five times around the spark plug wire as close to the plug as possible. I hope that I do not encounter problems with this generator as the other reviews are weighed heavily toward the lauded tech service being awful and beyond useless. Nothing galls me more than calling “expert” tech service and find out that I am speaking to someone in another country whose resources are nothing more than the same owners manual that I have. We’ll see! I guess I can’t offer any more comments at this time but I will come back after I’ve had time to evaluate the generator during actual usage. It’s getting to be storm season here in the southeast followed by winter ice. I’m pretty sure I will need the generator. I wonder if Amazon will post this long review? Hope it is helpful. ... show more

  • Very quiet, no issues with starting and running on Propane
This little generator is very quiet and easy to handle. I saw some reviews about problems starting it on propane, but I had no issues. There are a few things that I did that might be useful to know. 1) After connecting the propane hose, open the valve on the bottle slowly then close it. Do this a couple of times so the hose will get gas in it. 2) Put it on choke and pull it thru slowly 3 or 4 times, then pull like your stating it. If it pops, switch it over to run and pull again. Mine usually starts on the about the 5th pull. 3) If you are just going to shut it down for awhile then restart, leave the propane line attached ( keeps the gas in the hose). I am very happy with how mine runs and how quiet it is. At 1/2 load, and from the front, 10 feet away, you won't need to raise your voice. At idle, 30 feet away, from the front, you can barely hear it running. I went in the house to see how it sounded at idle and my asked if I had shut it off. I ran an oil filled heater, both elements, a 12 inch and a 24 inch fan all at the same time with no overloading issues. Made coffee in a drip pot no issues, Ran a big microwave, it ran it but was close to overload getting it started. I also ran a porta-band with no issue. All of these were on propane. Note: Would NOT start 13,500 BTU roof air on my travel trailer. Not a surprise really, doesn't have enough starting capacity. Added this due to people giving bad reviews because it won't/can't start big ac. if you need to run a roof air you will need at least 3500 watts starting. ... show more

  • Not dependable! Broke after less than 2 months
Bought two of the Champion inverter portable generators, as well as the box to run them together. We tested them at home, ran them single and in tandem with our Coleman Travel trailer. After the break in period I changed the oil, put the full synthetic as was recommended, also added magnetic dipstick to remove any break in and normal wear and tear shavings. Changed the spark plug to NDK as recommended, and off we went. First stop was in Louisiana, after the second night of running them in tandem together, one of the units kept sputtering and shutting off. Gas cap was in open position as per instructions, but when attempting to pull start the unit, it would pull easy one time and just about pull your shoulder out the second time.. I had heard that sometimes these units get a “vapor lock”, so I pulled the spark plug out and pulled the the start rope, it made a weird popping/wheezing noise and a small amount of gas and fumes came out the spark plug hole.. I put the spark plug back in and it returned to an easy to pull situation, and it started easily after a couple pulls. After a few minutes running, it started sputtering again, and shut off. Again it had the hard to pull every other pull.. repeated the spark plug process and it was almost identical to the first time and pulled and started easily. When it died after a short period again, my wife attempted to pull start it and the entire pull start came loose. The rope was still attached but from looking in through the housing it appeared the plastic pull start assembly broke. Needless to say, off to the local Lowes to buy a Craftsman generator, noisy, gas hungry, but ran like a top. My wife finished the trip as planned using the Craftsman and occasionally using the second Champion Inverter when she just needed to charge the batteries. After about a month on the road I flew out to meet her in Washington State, and while I was there the second inverter would start running rough and shut itself off, just running the converter in the trailer.. couldn't leave it on the auto cycle because it would shut itself off. Also noticed that it was doing the hard to pull thing as well. Contacted Amazon and they refused to help because it was over 30 days (apparently you only get 30 days if it is hazardous/combustible product).. which by the time my wife got back from the trip it was at the 97 day mark anyway. So now we have two units, one is toast (can’t start due to broken pull starter), and the other is not dependable and will likely break the pull starter unless I pull the spark plug every time it shuts down. We will see what Champion says in the coming days. Will update with resolution. My advice is don't depend on these as your only source of power when boon-docking. ... show more

  • Rock solid work horse!!
I used this as a primary way to charge my solar batteries on stormy days while living in my trailer for 2 years straight. It ran pretty much every day that was not sunny, and at least once a week all year to pump, through storms and all.. living in a mini shed like cover it never gave up. Plenty power to run my trailer's 120v and charge batteries. Ran on propane and gasoline both fine with EcoMode on. I used propane more as it usually cost me less per hour running and was easier to quick swap a propane tank in the rain than refil gasoline and not get water in it. It is still running and used on my property though it doesn't get as much constant use anymore. Very easy to carry around, and small enough to tuck away. I had to replace the 12v outlet as I was running too many amps through it at times and melted it a bit (a lot), my own fault there. I also had the pull string break once near the handle, worn from vibrating. So I just remounted and retied the knot and it's been doing fine after. The extra tension now stopped that destructive vibrating. ... show more
