First product defective, but Amazon replaced so fast that I was shocked. I have no wifi so must use LTE. Setup a little confusing cause current OS is installed, no need to download anything, but it doesnt tell you to restart the Kindle. Amazon support solved that and reader is much more than I expected in terms of use. I already love it. It fits well in my hands, is light, and the page buttons are great. There is enough functionality to satisfy someone working on a thesis for advanced degrees. Way more than I need. The basic connectivity so I can buy and download books is there with basic library management functions. If all you want is LTE, (during initial setup) on the setup wifi screen click Do it later, finish the tour, then restart the kindle by going to all settings and clicking the 3 dots menu on that page, select restart. Kindle will restart and you can now enjoy the product. You will see LTE icon in upper right of screen. Enjoy and ignore comments about must use wifi to install. ... show more

Needed a replacement for my old Kindle and really wanted the page turn buttons and other features of this model but didn't want the crazy high price of a new one. So far I've had no issues and it works as it's supposed to. Still pricey, which is why I say "mostly".

I've never had a kindle. Loved the idea of reading lots of books, and would read maybe 1-2 a year. I simply didn't read a lot of books as I felt it cumbersome to lug a book around (as a guy who doesn't carry a bag around, I can't simply put it in my purse, as my wife would). Well, finally, my wife and I decided to read a book series together. I was stuck reading the book on my kindle app...and while it was great, the screen was quite small. Doable, but less than favorable experience. The only Kindle that appealed to me was the Oasis, but it was too expensive at $250 to justify at the time. Something I wasn't sure I'd use. I saw this deal to buy one refurbished for less, and saw that there was a generous holiday return policy in case I didn't like it. Oh boy...this device arrived, and I can't stop reading. I've finished a 400 page book, and 350 into the second after about a week and a half. I love the clarity of the screen. It get's better the more sunlight there is. I've never experienced a digital screen like this before. As a techy, this was a big deal to me. Having the ability to change fonts, look up words as I read, change the warmth of the screen...all of these features were great! When I forget or don't have my kindle with me, I can pull out my phone, open the app and continue reading where I left off. While driving, I can listen to the audiobook, arrive home, and open the book right where I left off on the kindle. It's such an amazing seamless experience. I also love that my wife and I can share our book purchases! Made our series reading so fun. Lastly, I connected the Libby app to my phone, and tied my library card to it. I'm able to check out ebooks and send them to my kindle with ease! It's absolutely a game changer for me. I don't really have an excuse not to read now, and super excited about that. ... show more

Received notice my old beloved 3g kindle was essentially getting discontinued. I wanted to keep free cellular since I don’t always have wifi and wanted to save a little money (bc for what it is, it is really expensive) so I went refurbished. As far as refurbished goes, I didn’t notice any defects and it looked good as new, I can’t compare to a brand new one so I can’t speak of performance differences. I’m still getting used to holding it and I’m not 100% on board with the shape, though I like the lighting options. It responds better than my old kindle which started a huge slow down the past few years, yet I get frustrated bc sometimes it won’t be responsive to my taps and swipes when I try to shut the screen off or get into other menus. The battery, oh the battery - the old kindle hands down, even in its advanced age - far far far better. I enjoy the fact when after a month or two it said low battery, I could eek another week out of it, at least finish that nights reading - it was very rare it shut down on me. I miss this. This new kindle lasts maybe a week or two and loses power even when I haven’t used it and has no qualms about just straight shutting down shortly after that low battery message appears (lol how rude) (and for the - that’s an easy fix crowd, how many of us are close enough to a plug to just plug in?). Keeping it in airplane mode extends it somewhat and I always shut the screen off when I’m not using it. In any case the battery time is disappointingly greatly reduced and that is my biggest disappointment with it - it went from a Nokia never die battery, to standard - not as bad as a smart phone… well, I’ll damper that statement as I generally only read one or two hours a night if that, so it may be closer to a smart phone battery charge when used for an entire day marathon reading session. I hope the next generation brings back vastly improved battery life and maybe a better touch design/ dedicated button(s) to call up settings, get back into the library/main menu so we don’t have to feel like we are fighting w it to accomplish basic menu navigation. Overall I’ll stick with it bc I think it’s the best of the group, but sticking it with the hope, technology improves over time. I’m very grateful that this version of the kindle still exists as it’s much easier and less tiring to read (other than real books)… ... show more

I used to have some Kindle devices... some got bricked, some had the battery drained in 2 hours, and others the touch screen got crazy. Why I'm still a fan of the Kindle? don't know for sure, but If I have to choose, to buy 2 or 3 basic Kindles or expend a bit more to have the best experience, much faster response, easy page swapping, easy audiobook Bluetooth listening, and much more features, until now the best I got. Saving some money for the Kindle Scribe... but for now... catch up with some reading. ... show more
