Description

The Celestron StarSense Autoguider is an all-in-one accessory that makes using your telescope easier and more rewarding than ever. This powerful, compact device connects to your Celestron mount to enhance its pointing accuracy and help you create sharp, long-exposure images with ease. Whether you’re an experienced astroimager or just starting in the hobby, adding this game- changing accessory will ensure you have more quality time under the stars. The StarSense Autoguider features a high-quality 4-element optical design devised by the famed optical designer Mark Ackermann, a highly-sensitive Sony IMX290-DLL monochrome CMOS image sensor, and an onboard computer working together to provide exceptional guiding accuracy and deliver sharper images. The StarSense Autoguider, with no user input needed, can align your telescope to the night sky in about three minutes. Celestron’s patented StarSense technology “sees” star patterns overhead and matches them to its internal database to automatically orient the telescope. The StarSense Autoguider dramatically simplifies the polar alignment process when used with a German equatorial mount. This accessory’s precise GoTo places your celestial objects in the center of the field—even if you’re using a high-powered eyepiece or today’s small imaging sensors. This accessory eliminates the need for additional accessories when autoguiding, providing tiny adjustments to the mount’s tracking to keep your target locked in over long exposures. The StarSense Autoguider works with Celestron CGX-L, CGX, CGEM II, Advanced VX, CPC GPS XLT, CPC Deluxe HD, NexStar Evolution, and NexStar SE computerized mounts. You can control this accessory via your NexStar+ hand control, CPWI telescope control software via a wired PC connection or WiFi. The autoguider also works with the rest of your Celestron accessories for a seamless solution that fits in perfectly with your telescope setup.

  • Works great
This review is from using this product as part of an astrophotography setup (Celestron NexStar 8se + Celestron Wedge): This product is well constructed. When using this with the NexStar Hand Controller, it works very well for astrophotography. Polar alignment is also very easy and quick. I was able to go from about 3 second max subframes to multi-minute (max tried so far was 3 minutes). Guiding has been very good. Calibrating this with the camera's sensor resulted in very accurate go-to operations. I am now able to setup my laptop inside my house while the scope is tracking a target outside. I did try using PHD2 and a guide-scope+mini-camera setup with some success, but this is a much better and faster solution. You do need to remember to stop this product from guiding when making adjustments, or moving to another target, otherwise using it has been straight forwards. My initial problems with using this product came from using the Celestron CPWI software to interface to this product. Removing CPWI has made this product work in my setup very well. ... show more

  • StarSense Autoguider gets the job done!
I’m really happy with the StarSense Autoguider, it’s making my life much easier for imaging with my AVX mount. I’m using a Canon camera with an 8” EdgeHD and was looking for a way to simplify my setup, as I don’t always want to use a PC, especially when I travel to dark skies. Love the automatic alignment feature, and guiding results have been great so far. I wasn’t planning on utilizing the polar align function, but I tried it out tonight and it was super cool! I was able to “dial in” so that I was polar aligned super accurately and it only took a few minutes. Oh, did I mention it looks really cool mounted on the telescope? Setup was easy, although it did take some time to go through the manual to get oriented. I had to update the hand control firmware first, which wasn’t a big deal. I had been playing around with the CPWI software in my backyard with my setup, so I was familiar with how that worked, I just needed to download the most recent version of that too. I like the guiding graphs in CPWI. It was a little more than I hoped to spend but has been worth it because it has been so fun to use. Kudos Celestron! UPDATE: I read the comments about people getting a box that was previously opened – mine was too, so I called Celestron Tech Support. They said the reason why the box was opened is that they did a 100% QA inspection before any units left the warehouse. So it's a good thing! ... show more

  • Could not get live view to work on 3 different PCs
I could not get liveview to work with 3 different PCs. Without live-view, you cannot see if the camera is in focus. Without a focused camera, it won't plate solve. Without a good plate solve, you can't guide. Finally, if the guide scope is not collimated to the telescope with some degree of accuracy, the system does not work. And you cannot get them collimated without the liveview function operational. There are two ways to see the liveview. The web interface using the camera's IP address or using the app. Neither would work for me. ... show more

  • Mixed review. Please read and consider.
I have a Celestron C-11 SCT on a Celestron CGX mount. I use a ZWO ASI178MC-cooled camera with a 2-inch mount. I do only astrophotography and have no visual capability. I have used the StarSense alignment camera since it came out. The StarSense Autoguider is a direct replacement as far as mounting and cabling is concerned, so it mounted and plugged right in. I use Celestron's CPWI software to control the mount. I fired it up and it recognized the SSAG immediately. I ran the calibration routine to calibrate the SSAG to the telescope and then did the 4 point auto alignment. The scope aligned and was ready for use in just a couple minutes. I selected several targets and slewed to them to test the SSAG's "goto" ability and found it to be dead on for each target. I selected a target and enabled "autoguiding" and did a 3 minute exposure. The autoguiding failed. Instead of pancakes, I got eggs for stars! The same test using PHD software and the Orion ST-80 telescope I have been using for guiding worked perfectly. THE SSAG WILL NOT ADEQUATELY GUIDE A 2800 MM FOCAL LENGTH TELESCOPE. Researching the problem I find that the ratio between the SSAG focal length and the C-11 telescope are too great. I suspect the SSAG would work fine on a shorter focal length, but mine is simply too big! Returning the unit. ... show more

  • huge learning curve
Tonight was my first clear sky with the AutoGuider, but I could not get it to work right. I have an email in to Celestron for help. I used the Autoalign for over a year and wanted something better. I am guessing that, even after all the reading about what to do, I still did something wrong or in the wrong order and this can be fixed. If not, it gets returned and I put the autoalign back on. UPDATE: I was ready to return it, but after still another factory reset of the mount and SSAG, I have been able to get it to work. Objects are not always centered, but close. To turn on autoguiding, you have to get into the SSAG menu and click it on. Then, when you want to goto another object, you have to turn it off (the back button will turn it off), then slew to the new object, then go back into the SSAG menu to turn on autoguiding. Yes, you have to do all that for each object you goto. With a little practice, it was not too bad. So far, I am inclined to not return it. I still need to practice ---just waiting for clear skies. When it works---I like it! So, going from 1 star rating to 3. For now. Update: I sent it back for a refund. There were instances after a successful alignment, that it would slew to one object, no problem, then go to another object and it would start a slow drift upward (sometimes downward) without stopping. I had to stop it, then start all over again with a new alignment. Enough of that. I sent it back for a refund. They said they would have sent me a new unit, but if there were any issues, no refund since the original 30 days would be passed. Maybe I'll wait a few years and see if the reviews get better and try again. ... show more
