  • These are really surprising! Fun discovery!
These are fun! The color palette is beautiful! They are fun to use and work surprisingly well. I didn’t know they even made these. The price is great. As far as durability, so far they seem fine. They hold like a colored pencil. We’ve used them a few times. It was a very relaxing family activity.

  • Great for beginner or seasoned artists
I have a 24 set of Derwent watercolor pencils, but was wanting to find a larger set, without spending a small fortune. When I found this listing for a 72 set by Castle Arts, that was under $40, I was really excited, but apprehensive about how good the quality would be. I read through the reviews, and decided to just give them a chance. And I am glad that I did. These are a nice affordable set, without losing out on quality. Not only did this set have a very nice selection of colors, with several light to dark shades of each color. But the leads lay down very smoothly and creamy, which is something I look for in pencils I use. The lead is not as soft as other watercolor pencil brands I’ve tried. These leads are more firm, like regular colored pencil lead. I assume that they have more binder in them than other brands do, but this isn’t a flaw for me. They can reach a deep vibrant opacity, with very little pressure needed. I tested them both wet and dry, and am very pleased with both methods. These pencils can be used in several light layers, using the wet technique, or can have a rich vibrant result if used dry. Definitely a very versatile product. So far, I love these pencils. The company was very friendly, and prompt with delivery. Very pleased with my purchase. ... show more

  • I'm in love!
I LOVE these!!! I'm very new to watercolor (I use pencil, acrylics, ink, pastels, glass and gouache) and am having a lot of fun learning the very different properties. I'm not great at abstract (with any medium) and these allow me the control I need to create something I'm actually satisfied with. Trying to create fine details with watercolor compared to acrylic was making my eye twitch (hats off to the watercolor artists out there), but these pencils have changed the game!!!! They lay down like a smooth pencil and manipulate easily with just a small amount of water (heck, they might blend without water, I'll have to experiment more). I find it much easier to control the color intensity and the flow with these. They literally might be my new favorite art tool of all time!!! ... show more

  • Smooth, a bit shiny...
I use Derwent Water Soluble Pencils and LOVE them the best but i use certain colors more regularly and needed to replace just them. It was going to cost more to replace my colors than this whole set because of shipping. These are Prime shipping so even cheaper. I thought I would try them. So far I like them a lot. I use them dry and wet over gouache. As the features of Giftable, Presentation and value 5 Stars! When I used them dry they were nice and smooth on black paper. When I used them over the top of gouache to bring out highlights they were okay. They were a bit shiny which doesn't go well with my method and I wont be able to use them for that. I have posted a picture comparing them in their water soluble state with Caran d'Ache and my favorite Derwent watercolor pencils. You can see that they are as pigmented as the other two but they aren't bad. I would say they are good coloring and at that great price you would be satisfied. ... show more

  • Outstanding budget friendly watercolor pencils
Product: I am not very good with watercolors and prefer watercolor pencils for more control. I own the Derwent Inktense pencils and enjoy them, but sometimes they are too vibrant for the look I'm going for. I have tried several different sets of budget-friendly watercolor pencils and I have to say, I am very impressed with the Castle Arts. They are as smooth and creamy as the regular Castle Art Pencils, which I also love. These watercolor pencils lay down nicely and blend beautifully. The pencils are octagon shaped so they are easy to grip and don't hurt your hands. They sharpen easily with no breakage. Though they come pre-sharpened, it is not a very fine point. I recommend sharpening before use. The first page I colored with them was in a book with Create Space paper since we know it is some of the most difficult paper to work with. The normal paper buckling occurred, but as you can see, the picture turned out great (though I am not an artist by any means.) I Only used the Castle Art Watercolor Pencils with fine liners and gel pens for accents. All the shadowing and gradient is from the pencils. You can not go wrong with these for the price. Seller: These pencils are lifetime guaranteed, I received a lovely note from the seller upon purchase asking if I had any problems. I did have one issue with my set. One of the pencils was defective and kept losing the lead when I sharpened it. I contacted the seller about the problem and requested a replacement pencil. They sent me an entire replacement set. The communication with the seller was very pleasant an professional. I was impressed with their genuine concern regarding customer satisfaction. I will definitely purchase from this seller again. ... show more
