  • These are really lovely pencils
It's funny....I bought these in 2020 and now in 2025, I am just trying them out! hahahaha! I was so pleasantly surprised and amazed at how lovely these pencils really are. The colors are so vivid and once applying the water, they transform your painting into a totally different picture without a grainy appearance, but smooth and even instead. So very easy to apply and I recommend them to artists who might be on the fence as to whether to buy them or not. I imagine they will be great for times when you just want to touch things up, like adding a shadow here or there, or darkening something in your work, making color a little more vivid or intense in a certain area, etc. Happy Painting!!!! ... show more

  • These are really surprising! Fun discovery!
These are fun! The color palette is beautiful! They are fun to use and work surprisingly well. I didn’t know they even made these. The price is great. As far as durability, so far they seem fine. They hold like a colored pencil. We’ve used them a few times. It was a very relaxing family activity.

  • Great for beginner or seasoned artists
I have a 24 set of Derwent watercolor pencils, but was wanting to find a larger set, without spending a small fortune. When I found this listing for a 72 set by Castle Arts, that was under $40, I was really excited, but apprehensive about how good the quality would be. I read through the reviews, and decided to just give them a chance. And I am glad that I did. These are a nice affordable set, without losing out on quality. Not only did this set have a very nice selection of colors, with several light to dark shades of each color. But the leads lay down very smoothly and creamy, which is something I look for in pencils I use. The lead is not as soft as other watercolor pencil brands I’ve tried. These leads are more firm, like regular colored pencil lead. I assume that they have more binder in them than other brands do, but this isn’t a flaw for me. They can reach a deep vibrant opacity, with very little pressure needed. I tested them both wet and dry, and am very pleased with both methods. These pencils can be used in several light layers, using the wet technique, or can have a rich vibrant result if used dry. Definitely a very versatile product. So far, I love these pencils. The company was very friendly, and prompt with delivery. Very pleased with my purchase. ... show more

  • Surprisingly Good
I've tried other relatively inexpensive colored pencil sets and ended up sending them back, but these are keepers! The colors are bright and they work very well with water. They also mix well, wet or dry. I've been laying down a basic wet color with these pencils, then going over it with my Faber Castell or Prisma Color pencils. This produces Good coverage on Strathmore cold press watercolor paper. (I like toothy paper and using the watercolor pencils first allows me to fill the paper crevices). They sharpen well. Sometimes I use these dry as a final touch to get rid of tiny white spots. I'm glad I ordered them! ... show more

  • Best Reasonably Priced Set Out There
I already had the regular colored pencils and loved them. I wanted a set of good watercolor pencils that was reasonably priced because I never wanted to use my expensive sets to “practice” with. I had a bad experience with a cheap set before but I liked the regular colored set so much I had to try the watercolor. I was not disappointed. The colors are bright and blend well. They are comparable to caran and Derwent but not as smooth. Too much layering gives a shiny waxy finish like a regular colored pencil would leave rather than the more chalky texture from the more expensive brands and for color saturation you just cant match Inktense. But these are truly fabulous pencils and I already find myself leaning on these and then adding pops of color with Inktense and gel pens at the finish. And they come with a fabulous guarantee. Castle sent me a whole new set of regular pencils because the core in the black one I had was broken even though I didn’t discover it until months after receiving them. I took a couple of photos of my experiment page. They aren’t the best but hopefully you can see the range and brightness of the colors. It was incredibly easy to go from dark to light and get just the right saturation. For comparison I did the fish with the caran and Inktense and the butterfly with just Inktense. I also highlighted with gel pen. ... show more
