Yes, they smell. Yes, there is oil on them. Yes they are sturdy and that I expected. When I bought them they were a dollar a pound, which is a great price. They fit my 2 inch bars perfectly.

Some people complain about the smell and oil...I mean your buying big heavy pieces of metal encased in rubber. Get a old tshirt and wipe them down, the smell will disappear in a few weeks. As for the weights they are all in acceptable range of advertised weight. They are Olympic plates and of course will fit olympic bars and equipment. Ive been using them for months and doing deadlifts dropping them and have had zero issues. They do their job at a very very good price. Ignore the people complaining about oil and smell, or spend a lot more money for a different product that will preform exactly the same but might not smell like fresh rubber. ... show more

I bought the 190lb set of economy cap bumper plates. The price was crazy good for the quality of these plates. Two of the plates were damaged in shipping. The box was crunched and they had big chunks missing out of them. I contacted CAP Barbell, filled out a form on their website, and they sent replacements for the damaged plates free of charge. They do have a layer of oil on them and stink when you first get them. You have to wipe them off with a wet rag and leave them to air out for a couple days at least but after that they are perfect. ... show more

Weights are nice, only issue I have are the weights are very oily and have a weird smell to them. Hopefully it goes away over time. Besides that very nice.

These plates are competition style. The rubber is high quality. The plates have strick weight tolerances and are ideal where dropping the weight is common. They have a smooth consistent finish with the weight clearly visible. This is my second purchase.

    • NOT Virgin Rubber as advertised
Not Ok to advertise Virgin Rubber and then have this VOC smell and this much oil - STILL after 3 weeks. Even with heat and fans and exhaust, it does not go away. Price may be good, but don’t harm your health buying these. Spend more $ and get true Virgin Rubber plates. I have multiple CAP products and have never had this type of issue. ... show more

    • Insanely stinky and slimey
These plates seem to serve their purpose just fine. I weighed all of them upon receipt and they were all within a pound of their marked weight. So far so good. However, something I was not aware of when I ordered them was how stinky and greasy they would be. I did not understand that plates of this kind are pressed in a mold, and that in order to get the plate out of the mold, oil must be applied to the mold itself. This leaves the plates covered in a stinky, oily film. I have since washed the plates and gotten a substantial amount of the grease off, but the smell, which I can only describe as industrial cigarette smoke, has not subsided. These plates are great. I managed to get them on sale for $100 and before they had any reviews. Was a bit hesitant because of the price and no reviews and I like to look at the reviews before buying, but for the price and all the plates I couldn't pass it by. They do come a bit oily and do have a bit of a smell to them but all you have to do it clean them up I used an old shower towel and let them air out for a few days and the smell isn't there anymore. ... show more
