The camera itself is decent—it’s compact, easy to use, and takes good quality photos for a point-and-shoot. The controls are intuitive, and it’s great for casual photography without the bulk of a DSLR. That said, it’s definitely expensive for what it is. Canon’s point-and-shoot cameras have been overpriced for a while now, and this one is no exception. I wanted a relatively simple point and shoot camera that would easily travel. I didn't want the bulk of a 35mm and I definitely wanted something more robust and versatile than an iPhone. This camera is robust, full of features and can be manipulated (programmed) or configured for "Auto" for simple click and go. The zoom is incredible. The attached picture of the moon was taken at 128X digital zoon; note the detail in the craters. I also took this to Yosemite and was able to get some nice shots of Half Dome. And, truth be told, it dropped a couple of times and there are no external scratches, nor did it affect the quality or ease of shooting This camera is a gem and I highly recommend it!! I wanted to amend this review. I was traveling (through Chile and Easter Island) and unfortunately, lost my camera along the way. I had taken a number of unbelievably clear and gorgeous shots of the big heads on Easter Island at sunrise. Anyway, my friends were over the top impressed with the quality of shots. When I returned home, the first thing I did was to order a replacement camera. I was sad to lose the first one, but loved it so much that I didn't think twice about replacing it. If you are not interested in using this camera for easy uploads to the Internet, then you can safely ignore this review. But if easy upload to your phone or home computer is important to you, then read on. After getting the camera logged onto our home Internet (not easy) I found that every time you need to upload new photos to my phone using their Canon Connect app, was a complicated process that didn't just do it, but required complicated permissions from both the app and the smartphone, each time. And then, after figuring out how to import the new photos to my smartphone, it didn't even have a way to easily access them. I had to use a file manager in order to find out where the app automatically stored them. And no, in case you ask, it did NOT automatically upload tehm to Google Photos or Amazon Prime Photos. Totally useless. It is MUCH easier to pull out the camera card and insert it into my computer. Very disappointed. ... show more

When I want professional quality photos I use my canon 5D Mark IV with Canon “L” series lenses. You won’t get this caliber of photo quality from the SX740 HS. Nor should you expect to. And for up close everyday photos, it’s hard to beat my iPhone 14 Pro (the one camera I always have with me). But for situations in which I’m to far away to use my iPhone and I don’t have my 5D Mark IV and a telephoto lens handy, this camera fits the bill very nicely. When I travel, I am normally not on a photography adventure, just a vacation but always take a lot of pictures for the memories. It’s great to have a mega zoom camera that I can carry in my pocket to cover all situations. Camera focus is fast and accurate and I can always dial in the best exposure I can get (when I have the time I always prefer to go “manual” and choose the shutter speed, aperture and ISO. When I don’t have time, “auto mode” usually gets you close enough to dial in during post processing. I also am very impressed with burst shooting capabilities to capture action shots. Up to 10 shots per second and am very impressed with how it maintains very accurate focus. In most situations, picture quality is very good but not professional quality. All in all, a near perfect travel camera to have along with my iPhone. ... show more
