From the Manufacturer Take a Closer LookAdvanced capabilities and chic style set PowerShot A4000 IS digital camera apart from the crowd. In a new high for the A-Series, it's equipped with a powerful 8x Optical Zoom to get you close to the action fast, and a 28mm Wide-Angle lens and Optical Image Stabilizer that deliver beautifully clear images with more excitement in every frame. This chic, compact camera in a range of appealing colors has a 16.0 Megapixel Image Sensor with DIGIC 4 Image Processor to ensure superior resolution and fast performance. Touch a button and you'll be shooting brilliantly lifelike 720p HD video!Zoom in on Wider, Steadier Shots 8x Optical Zoom with 28mm Wide-Angle Lens The 8x Optical Zoom (35mm equivalent: 28–224mm) in PowerShot A4000 IS digital camera is the most powerful ever seen in Canon’s A-Series.It gives you a huge range of potential images from a single location, which is perfect for sporting events and other occasions when your shooting stance is fixed, or times when moving in too close might disrupt the action you’re trying to capture. The lens’s 28mm wide-angle perspective puts more image in every frame for dynamic, exciting shots. Optical Image StabilizerHandheld shooting can often lead to camera shake, making photos and videos blurry. Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer is a sophisticated system that uses lens-shift technology to correct unwanted camera movement. It makes handheld photography more practical, providing excellent image quality in many difficult shooting situations: outdoors at dusk, inside without a flash, and even at the telephoto end of the zoom range without a tripod. For photos, it enables shooting at slower shutter speeds, accommodating more low-light shooting situations than ever before without having to boost ISO sensitivity. With camera shake and vibration reduced, you get a sharper, steadier image. And because it is an optical system, there is none of the image degradation typical with electronic image stabilizers. High Resolution, Highly Advanced Performance16.0 Megapixel Image Sensor with DIGIC 4 Image ProcessorWith the camera’s 16.0 Megapixels of resolution, your images are rich and clear, with textures and tiny details faithfully reproduced even at the long end of the big 8x Optical Zoom. This high level of resolution is ideal for creating the largest prints, and allows you the flexibility to blow up and crop any section of an image to express your creativity. The DIGIC 4 Image Processor powers the camera’s advanced systems and features, ensuring fast, reliable performance with low battery consumption.DIGIC 4 Image ProcessorCanon DIGIC Image Processors have set the standard for functionality and performance since their groundbreaking introduction in 1999. With each successive generation, DIGIC processors have brought elevated performance and powerful new features to PowerShot digital cameras. The DIGIC 4 Image Processor has ushered in a new level of picture quality and accelerated processing, making possible features such as high-speed continuous shooting, HD video and Face Detection Self- timer.A Smarter Camera Means Better PhotosSmart AUTOPhotographers of all levels appreciate a camera – especially a go-anywhere compact digital – that takes the hassle out of capturing beautiful images. The PowerShot A4000 IS digital camera gives you Smart AUTO – sophisticated Canon technology that makes getting that great shot as simple as pressing the shutter button. Smart AUTO automatically detects scenes by assessing various factors in both the background and the subject. Detected scenes are analyzed using 32 predefined shooting situations. The camera then makes optimal settings to ensure the best possible image capture when shooting still images. Smart AUTO also includes Advanced Subject Detection, which allows the camera to detect and track non- human moving subjects like animals and vehicles. With Smart AUTO, all you have to do is frame your shot and capture away.Shooting Modes/Special Scene Modes Smart AUTO The camera automatically selects the best shooting settings for optimal quality based on subjects and environmental factors to provide point- and-shoot simplicity. Program The camera automatically and intelligently selects the aperture/shutter speed combination based on the shooting conditions. Live View Control Enables Brightness, Color, and Tone adjustments to your images using easy-to-understand controls. Portrait Brings the subject into focus while beautifully blurring the background. Face Self-timer The camera waits for a face to enter the frame before releasing the shutter. Low Light For high quality image capture in an amazing range of dimly lit situations. Fisheye Effect Now you can get the fisheye effect – a classic photographic distortion – without a fisheye lens. Miniature Effect Give images a miniature look with an effect that emphasizes perspective by blurring the top and bottom of the image. Toy Camera Effect Simulates photos taken with “toy” or pinhole cameras, darkening the image at the edges to create a vignette effect. Monochrome Choose from three single-tone effects: Black-and- White, Sepia, or Blue. Super Vivid Super Vivid intensifies existing hues, saturating the scene with bright colors. Poster Effect Poster Effect combines several similar shades into one color, turning subtle gradations into eye- catching, scene-popping contrasts. Snow Shoot clear snow scenes without darkened subjects or an unnatural bluish tint. Fireworks Create brilliant images of skyrocketing fireworks. Long Shutter Use to blur moving subjects for artistic effect, ideal for urban night photography. Discreet Mode Disables flash, AF assist beam, and all camera sounds with one mode dial setting–so you can capture images in quiet areas. iFrame Movie The Apple® movie format, iFrame, makes it easier and quicker to import and upload videos while retaining high image quality. When shooting video, the system automatically selects among Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod IS modes. With Intelligent IS, you can concentrate on image capture, letting the camera make the most effective IS settings to assure the steadiest possible image.Normal Corrects for a wide range of camera movement when shooting stills.Panning Panning motion is detected so that IS does not interfere with desired camera movement.Macro (Hybrid) Corrects for shift-type camera shake, which typically occurs in macro (close-up) shooting.Dynamic Effective for video shooting at wide-angle focal lengths, eliminating the unwanted shaking that typically occurs while walking.Powered Compensates for hand movement when shooting video at the telephoto end of the zoom range, where camera shake is magnified.Tripod When tripod use is detected, the Image Stabilizer is stopped because it is not needed. • Very Nice Point & Shoot Camera
Color: Silver
My Sony DSC-W150 encountered an issue as the slot holding the memory card apparently lost a pin or clip as the card would not longer stay in the camera. Everything else worked great. I shopped around and based upon lots of reviews opted for the Canon PowerShot A4000 as being the closest comparable. There are some features on the A4000 that are better than the Sony. The Canon has 16 megapixels while the Sony 8.1 megapixels. The Sony has a 5 X zoom while the Canon has 8 X zoom. I will keep the rest of the review to the Canon. The body of the Canon is aluminum, however the door holding the memory card and the battery appears to be plastic which at times does not always open or close that freely. The metal tri pod bush is metal and that is good. The screen is a large 3 inch LCD and thus far has worked great both inside and outside. There is no viewfinder and this seems to be common on today’s lower priced point and shoot cameras. The camera comes in four different colors thus get the one that suits you. Mine is red. There is 720p HD for movie shooting and the quality on just the one I have taken is good. The off/on button is on the top of the camera and if you have big fingers you may find at times the button is a little hard to turn on and off. It is rectangular and less than ½ inch long and imbedded directly into the case at almost case level. Canon advises this button is sunken into the body to prevent accidental depressing when you’re trying to take a picture. The telephoto feature is triggered by the rotating button that surrounds the shutter button. It works fine. The back of the camera is dominated by the 3 inch screen which is not all that bad. The buttons for changes is located on the right and consist of five buttons plus the center ring which has control over four functions. One of the buttons is the top one which is dedicated to the video which I found was easy to operate. The shutter button seems to have a small delay, thus after pushing the button it takes a moment for the shutter to click. I am getting used to it. After power up the shutter button takes a little over two seconds for it to be activated. The memory card is an SD card which is good as it is common and readily obtainable even when traveling. I guess the last question is does it take pictures? I find the quality very acceptable for a point and shoot camera. I use this camera primarily for taking quick photos while traveling and in places that a large digital camera might not be acceptable. Food review pictures are easy to take and after three of four, just drop the small camera in your pocket and this disturbs no one. I have not attempted to make any enlargements for printing as I use a large digital camera for that. This is a nice traveling companion and easily fits into your pocket so you can be ready for that unusual shot. ... show more

  • Great size for a "purse camera."
Color: Silver
I am replacing a c. 2005 Olympus point-and-shoot digital camera. Anything newer would be vastly superior. I was considering the Canon PowerShot G15 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom as a do-it-all camera, but I take a lot of action photos. I need a *fast* camera--a DSLR. So I went all the way up to a Canon EOS Rebel T4i 18.0 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 18-135mm EF-S IS STM Lens , but I am not going to keep that in my purse! Why miss a great shot simply because I don't have my camera with me? This little cutie will always be with me wherever I go. I could hardly wait for the battery to charge! Being familiar with digital cameras, I figured out the interface within minutes. I ran the camera through all its combinations. Fun! An 8x zoom and all the cool auto settings--including "toy camera" and fisheye--are fun to play with. Image stabilization means that I can do hand-held shots in less-than-perfect lighting and get a good image on the first try most of the time. Saves a lot of time when processing images. If you don't plan to read the user manual on CD, you'll be missing out on a lot of great information about the features. IT IS WORTH THE TIME TO LEARN HOW YOUR CAMERA WORKS. Look at the CD. More than once. Until you learn what all the controls do. The battery charger is small -- no cord! :-) The prongs flip out and then back in again. The charger lies flat against the wall when it is in use. There is an indentation so you can use the second electrical socket at the same time. The automatic lens cover is very delicate. Do not quickly lay the camera lens-side down as it is still closing. I got something caught in there, but the camera seemed OK after I opened and closed it a few times to check. I am very pleased with this choice for a "purse camera." When I need a better image, or ability to shoot rapid fire, I'll have the "big girl" DSLR. When I use the cable to connect the A4000IS to my Win 7 PC, I get the option of deleting the images off the camera right after they're downloaded to the PC. Saves me a step later. You can also mark certain images as "protected," so that they will not be deleted except when you format the camera's memory card. Maybe take a photo of your contact information, and protect that? The cable also works with my Canon Rebel, so right after I empty one camera, I stick the cable into the other and download off that one as well. UPDATE - JUNE 2, 2013: Within two months, this camera started to lose its ability to focus on something close in bright sunlight. It progressively got worse. The lens cannot focus and the shutter does not fire. The shutter will fire for long-range subjects, but the image is blurry. I did some online research. I'm not the only one who has experienced this. I CAN SEE DUST BEHIND THE FRONT LENS ELEMENT when I go out into natural sunlight and move the camera back and forth to give me some 3D perspective. I contacted Canon via e-mail. The recommended solution is to send in the camera for cleaning. Will this be a permanent fix? Am I better off just returning this camera, and starting all over? I'll be back for an update. UPDATE - JULY 5, 2013: I sent the camera to Canon. As soon as it arrived at their repair shop, they sent me a message by e-mail. Within 24 hours, they wrote back again to tell me that the camera could not be repaired for lack of parts. Really? It's relatively new. They sent me a reconditioned replacement. By FedEx. Faster than I was expecting. So I'm back in business, with only about a week of downtime. I'll watch this new camera for the same problem, but I'm happy to have my little purse camera back again! I appreciated Canon's fast response and their willingness to do what it takes to make me love this camera again. Canon sent a follow-up e-mail to ask how I liked their repair service. I think they are trying hard to make their customers happy. UPDATE - NOVEMBER 20, 2013: I am now on the THIRD camera. And I think that the auto focus is starting to go. Again. I assume that if the problem is a one-time fix, the reconditioned cameras that Canon has been sending me should stay fixed. But they haven't. I probably have time to return it two more times for replacements before the warranty is up. But will I bother? What's the point? I need a purse camera that will last for more than the one-year warranty period. So I have to downgrade my rating from 4 stars to ... two? One? Maybe one is all I can rate this camera. Pitiful. I wanted so badly to love it. UPDATE - JANUARY 14, 2014: I am approaching the end of the one-year warranty. I will return the camera one last time for a replacement. But I will not be able to let it rattle around loose in my purse. The dust eventually kills it. A local Canon dealer recommended I go with a sealed-lens camera such as the Canon D20. I'm not all that excited about giving up some of the image clarity for the durability. So I'm really on the fence. And the tops of the fence slats are poking me in the butt. I guess I'll keep the A4000 in my purse, but also put it inside a camera case to reduce the amount of dust it encounters while it's in there waiting for me to whip it out for a quick snapshot. I LOVE THIS CAMERA! It feels so wonderful in my hand. It takes decent photos for a camera of its size. I only wish it didn't succumb so easily to dust in the lens. UPDATE - JULY 8, 2014: Despite my care in keeping this fourth A4000 in a case when not actually using it, the dust returned after a few months, the same length of time as the last three cameras. So this is the end. I gave the camera to my husband to see if he could clean it. Everything was so tightly assembled that there was no way to take it apart without destroying the components. So that explains why Canon would simply give me a new camera each time. There is no way to repair an A4000. I am off in search of a "purse camera" that won't slowly die from internal dust. A waterproof camera such as the Canon D20 or D30 seems to be my only option now. I simply ask too much from a camera. Out of focus snapshots are not going to make me happy. I still have my Canon Rebel 4Ti when I need a really good, clear image. ... show more

  • Great Camera, Great Company
Color: Blue
My boyfriend bought me this camera in March and it worked great. It's easy to use, the color is so pretty (I got blue), and it's so easy to upload the pictures to my computer. Plus the program that comes with the camera automatically sorts the pictures in my folder into separate folders by date which is so convenient and makes the photos easy to sift through and find. A few months after having the camera, I pulled it out of the case and every picture had a line across the image, even when I uploaded the pictures to my computer. I emailed Canon and they told me to send it in. I had to pay for shipping to get it to Canon, but once I sent it in, Canon had returned to me a refurbished camera in less than a week with a brand new battery and charger, all the accessories, so now I have two of each of those. The camera works great and I didn't have to pay a cent for the repair because I believe it was soon enough after I bought it. I had ended up sending it in almost six months after purchasing it. I am very pleased with Canon's service. They emailed me back in a timely fashion with all the details I needed and then my camera was returned to me completely fixed so quickly and with new accessories. I don't usually write product reviews, but I wanted to give Canon the shout out they deserved for this. I will have no problem buying a Canon again. ... show more
