Description

Product description One of the most important accessories for each lens you own. A lens hood provides multiple functions: it shades the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality; in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles. Almost all EF and TS-E lenses have a Canon lens hood engineered specifically for it. The addition of a lens hood can help prevent flares--those circles of light that can accompany images where a strong light source is just outside the fame. These type of lens flares occur when indirect light rays pass through the front lens elements but don't make it all the way through to the image sensor. Canon's EW-73B Lens Hood is designed for the Canon EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM SLR Lens.

  • Easy to attached on my 18-135mm lens
Easy to put on my 18-135mm lens and it feels good quality

  • A must have for any lens, no matter the type or size of camera. Makes a huge difference in the quality of my photos.
You might think that you don't need this item because you don't see any obvious flare or glare in your photos, but you should absolutely have a lens hood for every lens you own. You will notice the difference immediately. It's shocking how much better your photos look when you use a lens hood. For the same reason you can see better when you're standing out in the sun if you wear a hat with a brim--such as a baseball cap--a lens hood will allow your camera to see better. And it doesn't just shade the face of the lens from light from above, but from the sides and below as well. Besides that, there are the traditional reasons for adding a lens hood: It makes you look like you know what you're doing, and it protects the lens from getting scratched or broken if you bump into something hard or drop the camera. The latter reason is an especially good one because this particular $20 piece of plastic protects my $500 lens--which otherwise should outlive me. As for the price, like I wrote above this item costs $20 or less here on Amazon. On the Canon website they sell it for $40. Enough said about that. There may be alternative lens hoods which are the right size for your lens, but if you're using a Canon lens I recommend getting the Canon lens hood. It fits right, it looks right. And lastly I should note that with this lens hood facing out, attached to my Canon EF-S 18-135mm STM lens, mounted on my Canon T4i, it fits fine in my MegaGear holster bag. I do not need to turn the hood around to put the camera in the bag, zippered up, at the ready. ... show more

  • It works, but has an issue.
It looks and feels genuine but I have many lens hoods for my canon lenses and this one doesn’t fit properly without a little work. I have two premium lenses with locking hoods and no problems. I also have four other lenses with hoods bought separately through amazon and directly from canon with no problems. I’m not saying that the hood doesn’t work, it just doesn’t line up as easy as all the others. The hood has to be lined up perfectly to attach. It’s not like the others where you can kind of get it close and just spin it until it lines up and locks on. It’s not a locking hood but the others sort of snap in and don’t move but this hood has about a half inch of play when attached. It doesn’t move free at all but it just doesn’t stay straight if you happen to rub it on leg or bump it on something. I have a shoulder strap that lets the camera hang at your side and sometimes the hood rolls. It doesn’t effect the shot, meaning the hood isn’t ever in the shot but it’s just crooked. I don’t have the old 18-135 anymore to see if it’s a difference between the nano and the old style design. I know how to spot most counterfeit camera equipment, not saying it’s counterfeit but in the world of online retailers, who knows 100% of time. ... show more

  • Fits properly ONLY when you enlarge the lens opening !!!
When the lens hood is installed with the text on the bottom after rotation it attaches without undue force. If you try to install it with the text on top after rotation it requires considerable force to get it to screw on. When the lens hood is installed backwards for storage the text must rotate to be on top else it requires the same considerable force to get it to screw on. My lens if a new 18-135 STM that came with my new Canon 70d; bought from Amazon incidentally. To prevent the possibility of damage to my lens exerting undue force to get it to attach I now ensure the text is in the proper position. I don't like it, consider it an undue irritation but will get used to "properly" positioning the hood before I attach it. UPDATE: After trying to use it for a few days and finally deciding I had nothing to lose if I destroyed the hood; I took a piece of fine sandpaper and enlarged the opening that attaches to the lens. Upon REALLY close visual inspection, it appeared that the opening for the lens was rough in a couple areas and may not have been properly finished at the molding factory. I smoothed the opening and enlarged it a bit and made SURE I had all the sandpaper grit blown off the lens hood by using my air compressor and nozzle before I attached to my new lens. Works GREAT now that I modified it so I changed my rating to 4 stars ... show more

  • Great if you have good patience (ADDED: And know how to properly install a lens hood).
Does what it's supposed to do, blocks stray light and protects the lens, IF you can get it on. For whatever reason, although it's a genuine Canon hood, it does not easily go on my 18-135, what it's made for. It's almost like the grooves for the bayonet blades aren't deep enough, you have to really futz with it to get it on properly. Once it's on there however, it's on tight, so there's no worry about it falling off. You just have to make sure it's on straight and not crooked, it seems to like ending up crooked. That's the only reason not 5 stars. UPDATE: So I will now give it 5 stars. It has to be realized, that this is the only Canon hood I have experienced trouble getting it to fit properly until I realized I was doing it wrong. You just have to push in a wee bit more than normal to get the blades to align properly. This assures a proper and secure fit. Once I figured this out, putting it on in either configuration was a breeze. Now I give 5 stars. ... show more
