  • Don't Believe the Negative Buzz!
Style: Body Only Set: Base
If you're a current Canon owner and your primary focus is Photography, then this is the camera for you. Up until this camera I've been using a 7D mark II and an M5. Both excellent cameras for what they're designed for. The only shortcoming was the available glass for these APC bodies. I shoot commercial real estate for part time gigs and finding a great interior lens is a challenge. On a recent shoot I rented a Sigma 12-24mm f/4 to use with the EOS R. While making photoshop corrections I was truly impressed with the detail and overall picture quality. In the past while using the magnification loupe for transformation adjustments the picture was often fuzzy and difficult to make out. With the RAW files from the EOS R it's like the picture was refined with some FBI CSI tool. The improvement is remarkable. The simple EF adapter worked perfectly with even 3rd party Sigma glass. The new RF mount is a revolution in lens design allowing for superior performance. My only gripe would be the present lack of native ultra-wide angle glass but I'm sure what ever comes out in the future will be worth the wait. I purchased a battery grip from another store to attach. It's bulky but the battery life improvement is appreciated. Not only that, the batteries can be charged in camera with the accompanying USB-C charge plug. As far as my other bodies I'll keep the 7D mark II for my sport and wildlife shoots for the superior servo AF, Burst Rate and Crop advantage. I'll keep the M5 for backup and for my distant travel adventures as it's a third the size and weight of the EOS R. The EOS R is pricey buts it's a solid investment! ... show more

  • Innovative!
Style: w/ 24-105mm Hard Kit Set: Base
I read many reviews of the R and which almost had me go a different direction, but I'm glad I didn't. The R brings a different concept in terms of controls. It takes time to get used to that and many reviewers didn't like the new approach to controls, which is in a nutshell less physical controls, more customization and more control via the LCD. I can see where these reviewers are coming from, but if you spend the time to customize and get accustomed to the new controls the camera is actually very simple to operate and is a lot of fun. I do agree though that the controls can still be simplified, for example, I think the function bar may be redundant and currently has limited customization options, to make it really useful it either needs some more options. I currently use it for ISO, since there is no dedicated ISO button. So once you moved past that - you basically get an AMAZING image quality that you would normally get in much more expensive cameras in a nice an compact package and a lower (but by any means not 'low') price. For me, it worked well to set the control ring for ISO and the smart bar for AF. Also, I recommend to use custom image type, the standard and landscape for me had too much sharpening. And btw sharpening can be fine tuned just like the much more expensive 5D. So overall, very nice camera. It's a little of a concern just because it's so innovative, and you might think that Canon will tone down on the next model and maybe simplify the controls next time, but for people like me with upgrading from an APC-S sensor (cropped) to a full frame and have some accessories and lenses, the R seems to be the best option vs. the 6D and maybe even the 5D which is a lot more expensive. ... show more

  • A new camera in more ways than one
Style: Body Only Set: Base
As far as I could tell, this was a new camera. In appearance and in packaging, there was no clue that this camera or any of its accessories had been used in any way. A lot of reviews fail in this particular way: People don't understand that Canon has changed a lot more concepts with this camera than just removing the mirror. There are a lot of new concepts in the controls as well, and getting to know this camera and how it can be controlled does require a learning curve of all the new things it can do and the new ways it does old things. A lot of reviewers are like people who get on a motorcycle and yell, "Giddyup." ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY FROM GLOBAL CAMERA USA!
Style: w/ 24-105mm Hard Kit Set: Base
BUYER BEWARE!!! I purchased a "renewed" unit from Global Camera USA and recieved a defective camera with a sneaky sensor issue. Unfortunately after the sensor warms up (usually 20+ minutes into a shoot) a thin green line begins to appear across the with of every photo. I first noticed this issue within a month of purchase and tried significant troubleshooting and diagnostic efforts to determine the cause, including software updates, new memory cards, new lenses, setting resets, etc. Unfortunately nothing worked, and when I finally confronted the seller about the defect I was told I receive a "direct import" model and would have to send it to a business in New Jersey (not Canon) and pay for the repairs myself. DO NOT BUY THIS, BUY CANON DIRECT ONLY!!! ... show more

  • Highly don’t recommend. Returned.
Style: Body Only Set: Base
Very disappointed in this renewed Canon R. I needed a good backup camera, and decided to gamble with a renewed version to save about $350 ($1470 ish currently vs $1799). The body appeared to be in good condition, but the camera was useless outdoors. I messed with the ISO and exposure, even did auto settings to try to figure out why all of my images were overexposed. I also had incredibly dark video regardless of what I did to adjust settings. Because of the warranty, I decided not to try to troubleshoot because I worried there were more problems just waiting to come up. I’d rather spend the extra $350 on new and have Canon cover it with a warranty if I’m going to spend this amount. Even when purchasing renewed, you expect it to work. I had to spend $15 to return it today, which isn’t a big deal in the long run. It was worth the gamble to try, but overall, it wasn’t worth it and I returned it. Waiting for a refund currently. ... show more
