  • Ultra Quiet and Reliable, But Limited for High-Airflow Tools Ultra Quiet and Reliable, But Limited for High-Airflow Tools
Style: Aluminum Tank w/Long Life Motor
This California Air Tools compressor is super quiet and well-built — perfect for mobile setups and small tools. I use it for my detailing business and it handles basic tasks like tire inflation and short air bursts very well. However, for high-airflow tools like the Tornador or blow guns, it runs out of pressure quickly and takes about 2 minutes to recharge. Not a dealbreaker, but be aware it’s better suited for light-duty or short-burst work. I’d recommend adding a secondary air tank if you want longer working time. ... show more

  • Unbelievably quiet!
Style: Aluminum Tank w/Long Life Motor
Our previous air compressor (still works, darn it!) I tested at 95 decibels, and it really is uncomfortable to the ears, and is loud enough to be damaging to the ears. This little beauty is very well sound-isolated, with not only rubber feet, but rubber buffers between the motor and the frame for maximum, vibration free noise dampening. When I first turned it on, I couldn't believe how quiet it was. As advertised, it tripped my free i-phone decibel app at right around 60 decibels. It was quieter than medium loud speech. It's possible to work beside it for hours without annoyance. An annoyance we've had is that it might trip a ground-fault outlet when the unit starts up. Other than that, it works like a charm, and it's nice to have two air outlets, just in case you ever want to run two tools at once. The only other problem we had was with quality control on the leads to the starting capacitor. We went to start it about 3-4 days after purchase and got big sparks and a tripped breaker. After removing the capacitor cover, we found that the wire nuts used were very small and both had fallen off, and the leads had shorted, thus tripping the breaker. We installed new, slightly larger and better wire nuts and haven't had a problem since. Great product. Highly recommend. year later follow up: Still love this machine and it's been used steadily almost every day. Buying another one! ... show more

  • These aren't for the long haul
Style: Aluminum Tank w/Long Life Motor
I really want to like this compressor more but there's just too many quirks that are aggravating. For a few years they were the only one in the game and so I've been through 3 of them. The first one the motor burnt up after about 2 years. The windings had a kink in it that arced against the motor. When I got it it was unable to turn on but turns out the wires on the switch weren't crimped to the terminals and were just loose under the cover. Easy fix but left me with little faith. Probably actually ran less than an hour a day. The second one the cheap manifold broke when I hit a speed bump I didn't see at about 20 mph. Just the jar of the bump broke it. It was about 3 years old and had a few other things wrong with it plus I couldn't find the manifold even from the company. This one is about 4 years old. A guy wrecked into me 2 years ago and the cheap manifold broke. It wasn't even a bad wreck. My 9 year old daughter asked "dad, did we just wreck"? Anyways, I was able to find a manifold from the dealer for $60 and replaced it. 2 weeks ago the air fitting started leaking unless there was a hose plugged in. No big deal. I bought a new fitting that had the dry thread sealer already on the threads. After the second turn the manifold split. It was not cross threaded and is still attached as we speak. I decided that at some point I would back it out and install a longer plug with liquid thread sealer or silicone since there is never more than one hose hooked up anyways. It's also gotten louder and takes a long time to fill with air. So last week I decided to take it apart to see what was wrong with it. I kind of figured it would be the piston rings and sure enough it was. One of them was missing a section of about an 1/2 inch. Both cylinders were badly worn, however, I noticed that the piston only travels half the length of the cylinder and all I had to do was flip the cylinder. So I ordered 2 new rings and they came today. I replaced the torn one first. Piece of cake. Then on the second one the allen bolt holding the piston ring plate stripped with less than half the force required to loosen it. I couldn't understand it so I gave it a closer look. The bolt on the first piston was black and hardened. The bolt on the second piston was shiny silver and soft. It looked like it may have been stripped when they assembled it. They are torqued rather high. Disappointed I just put it back together and luckily it runs almost as new. The tank filled in under 60 seconds and it's quiet again. However, the second piston ring had a soft spot on it and I'm not sure how long it will last or how I'll get that bolt out. Like I said they are on there very tight. Also, the manufacturer wanted $34 per piston ring. I found a better quality one on amazon for $11 for both of them. That right there will probably make me look elsewhere when it's time for a new one. That Makita MAC320Q sure looks good. I'm a trim carpenter and I don't think there's more than 2500 hours on this thing. The cylinders looked like there should be 10000 hours on it. Glad they are reversible. On a final note. These compressors are easy to carry but with the fittings, regulator, and gauges on top they are vulnerable in the back of a pick up truck. Especially if you load ladders or materials with it. If it wasn't for shotty assembly and a few junky parts this would be 5 stars. To be fair I think most brands from China have similar issues. The days of growing old with your compressor are long gone. Glad I have a dog. Oh yea, I still need to try to seal up the cracked manifold...... ... show more

  • Unsafe due to tank damage
Style: Aluminum Tank w/Long Life Motor
The motor was loose and laid in a weird position when the box was opened. I found four loose nuts scattered inside the box and they matched the four bolts that should have anchored the motor. These nut probably came loose during shipping? Not sure how this happened. The box showed no apparent damage. The heavy motor had damaged the lower tank in three places opposite to the side with the US flag. One was a scratch that went through the label and scratched paint but the metal seemed okay. The other two spots were smaller but much deeper: they were cut to the metal. I don't think the lower tank is safe to use. I'm returning it for a refund. The lower tank had a US flag with the words "Assembled in USA". The source of the problem was apparently quality control of the assembly process! ... show more
