Many full size sewing machines have become very complicated. This sewing machine reminds me of the machine I learned to sew on over 50 years ago - just a bit more compact. It is great for a beginner (I learned to sew when I was 10 years old and this would be appropriate for that age) or someone who just wants to make curtains or halloween costumes for their kids. I like that it is so compact to store since I'm downsizing. The machine came already threaded and with a bobbin in place - it had a quality control test square still attached. Just cut the threads and you're ready to sew if you want white thread. I feel comfortable replacing my large, complicated machine with this one for my sewing needs. The threading of this machine is pretty standard. I've used many different machines and there is nothing special or complicated about this one - that said, if you've never threaded a machine before it may seem complex. The bobbin is a standard flat metal bobbin - all my current bobbins fit. I didn't test adding thread to an empty bobbin (no empty bobbin to use), but the instructions for that are conventional. As soon as you plug the machine in, it has power. You can start sewing using either the foot pedal or a switch on the side that has a low (slow) or high (fast) setting. I like the foot pedal - its what I'm use to and it leaves both hands free all the time for guiding fabric. I tested this on a piece of heavy leftover upholstry fabric. It easily handled both single and double thickness of this challenging fabric. When I tried to sew binding tape on the upholstry fabric, the feeder foot struggled. To make this work I needed to go slow and work the position of the fabric aggressively. It should handle light to mid weight fabric easily. It might struggle to hem heavy denim jeans. I did not test all the stitches or use the buttonhole foot. Cons: A large spool of thread doesn't fit in the spool holder! The lever to raise and lower the foot is in an unusual position. The thread cutter (scissors icon) is definitely in an awkward position - I would use scissors to snip my threads instead. It struggled when I tried to reverse "on the fly" (while the machine was running), which is how I normally do it. ... show more

I had been using a mini electric handheld sewing machine for small repairs and small sewing projects, this is much better than that! But, if I had the space and inclination, a normal sized sewing machine would probably be less finicky and overall easier to use, while being more cumbersome than these smaller machines. Overall, I can still recommend it, especially for people that are just getting started and aren't sure how much they want to spend getting into sewing! Slight adjustments and a little extra care while sewing was all I needed to avoid most hiccups using this machine. ... show more

This is a very basic machine designed for the beginner market. What I like about this machine is its small size, its robust construction, the variety of stitches available, the convenient reverse sewing switch, all of the thread and implements that come with the machine, and its lighted work area. It will sew a few layers of fabric. There is no doubt that with patience and practice a person can sew some fairly complicated items with this machine. It does come with its challenges. The threading must be done very carefully, feeding the thread from the back of the needle to the front. With the small area to work in, this can be a challenge. There is an off switch, but it doesn’t turn off the lights, so you have to use the power plug to control power to the machine. The Low and High switch runs the machine when switched to either position, overriding the foot control. I’m not sure that was the intent, but that is the way it works. Over all I have to give it a 4 star rating as I found it very challenging to use. ... show more

Hey, now, I feel like a seamstress. I have feared sewing machines, since I repeated broke needles in my high school home economics class, but I wanted to branch out from the needle and thread hemming I attempted. This is a great starter unit as it is easy to thread and it actually allows you to learn how to sew with confidence. My mother is an amazing hobbyist seamstress and she recommended the Singer brand as it is what she's used for years. However, when I saw this one available with the features I needed, I went for it. I love it's simplicity and as I mentioned the ease in threading a needle which was my first problem back in school. Threading the needle used to take me 30 minutes and then I would break the needle. I don't know what I was doing wrong back then, but I haven't broken a needle yet with this one. If anything, it's a functional confidence booster and you can make Etsy-quality homemade goods easily. It is small, so I big projects like quilts would take a longer time, however, I did make a table cloth and some pillow covers...only required hemming really but I felt like a real, qualified seamstress. I love this sewing machine for a few reasons. It’s small and has a lot of pieces that goes with it, it’s lightweight, and makes beautiful stitches. It’s easy to use and I would recommend for beginners.
