Description

The Brother ST531HD Strong & Tough sewing machine handles everything from lightweight silks to up to six layers of denim. It features a durable metal frame, a metal needle plate for smoother fabric feeding, heavy duty needles for thicker fabrics, and a metal finger guard. 53 unique built-in stitches are included, and an easy to use, one-step auto-size buttonhole. The ST531HD comes complete with 6 sewing feet, including a spring action zigzag foot, nonstick, blind stitch, zipper, buttonhole, and button sewing feet. This machine also has a built-in easy needle threader, jam-resistant Quick-Set drop-in top bobbin, automatic bobbin winding system, a free arm for sewing cuffs, skinny jeans and sleeves.

Took me a minute to figure out how to pull down the auto needle threader and go between needle and threader so a microscopic hook will grab the thread. Everything else from filling the bobbin to threading the machine was EZ. Includes follow-by-numbers on the machine itself. Same with drop in bobbin ease. Hemmed jeans quickly and easily. Would have been nice to include a brush to dust bobbin etc. & prefer metal to some of the plastic bobbins & feet. There are both. Overall great for beginners or seasoned sewers. This machine is a beast. Way better than my other one. Trying to figure out the width and length for stitches are kind of difficult but that's the fun part. I definitely move faster with this one. I can't wait to see what I create.

This is a basic sawing machine. Very good basic stitches. Works well with multiple types of fabric. The accessories are skimpy. Only few foots and bobbins. Instructions do not include a documentation of how to use the double middle. Need to go to the videos for that.

At first I really loved this machine. It is smooth as silk going over all kinds of fabric. After using it for a week or so to construct heavy coats, Im annoyed. The distance between the needle plate and the machine is SHORT. they give you a weird little key that is very hard to hold onto to undo the screws that hold the needle plate in. Why not a screwdriver that is easy to hold? The free arm isnt super easy to use because of the short height of the clearance. Also it is impossible to get to parts of the machine that get bogged down with thread on occasion. I think some reengineering is in order, perhaps by someone who sews daily like I do. I had to pull out my old New Home to finish a faux fur coat sleeve. I just couldnt wrangle the sleeve into the tiny space given on this machine. All in all, I wouldnt order this one again, that says it all. ... show more

I can’t fully review the mechanics of the Brother ST371HD sewing machine because I received it yesterday. After I use the machine for a while, I will add to my review. The reason I’m doing a review before using the machine is to express my amazement regarding the FAST delivery of the sewing machine. I ordered the sewing machine on a Wednesday & received it early morning on the following Friday! (yesterday). I live in a rural area & I allow a week or more for my “many” amazon deliveries. This delivery was a pleasant surprise. Good Job UPS & Good Job Brother Sewing Machine Seller! I do want to say that I did research before purchasing this sewing machine. This is my 2nd Brother Sewing Machine. I purchased my first Brother Sewing Machine in 1975. I used it until it broke in 2013. I loved that machine! It was dependable & easy to use. I don’t sew a lot but I sew enough crafty & mending projects to warrant owning a sewing machine. My mother & my grandmother were Great seamstress. They made their own clothes plus mine & my siblings. I learned to sew from them, mainly from my grandmother. One thing I do want to say is that in the QUESTIONS area for this sewing machine description, several people ask which compatible sewing machine case to buy. Brother answers with a “recommended” case. When comparing the size of the Brother sewing machine with the “recommended” case, the width of the Brother Sewing Machine is more than the width of the “recommended” case. I asked a QUESTION regarding the width discrepancy & received an answer from Brother saying there is no “recommended” case for this particular Brother model. I did find & ordered a Sewing Machine Case with larger measurements than the Sewing Machine so I hope that case works for my lifetime with my new Brother Sewing Machine. Also when doing research, I found a similar but slightly better Brother Sewing Machine. However, the other Brother Model was not available or was out of stock at all the bigger well known shopping chains, to include Amazon. That Brother Sewing Machine model is ST531HD. It’s a few dollars more & has a few more features than my Brother ST371HD (ST = Strong & Tough, 37 stitches, & HD = Heavy Duty). Of note is that when my almost 40-year-old 1975 Brother Sewing Machine broke, I replaced it with a comparable Singer Sewing Machine. I think it was Singer’s Anniversary Model for that year? After several attempts at trying to learn how to use it, I gave up because it was too complicated for me. It’s brand new sitting in a closet for the last 7 years.
