  • 👍 Features like automatic needle threader and well-placed LED selection box enhance user experience.
  • ⏳ Quick learning curve, allowing beginners to start projects almost immediately.
  • 👗 Suitable for a wide range of sewing tasks, from simple stitches to more complex dresses and embroidery.

Cons

  • 🛠 Some users find the included accessories lacking for specific tasks like quilting.
  • 💪 While generally durable, there are concerns about the build quality compared to vintage models.
  • 🧶 Issues with thread catching and breaking due to horizontal thread placement.
  • 📐 The mini table extender is cumbersome for some, and the pressure foot tension can't easily adjust for thicker materials.

Should I Buy It?

If you're entering the world of sewing or looking for a reliable, feature-rich machine for advanced projects, the Brother XR9550 is a strong contender. Despite some concerns over accessory completeness and build quality, its performance, ease of use, and wide range of features make it a highly recommended purchase for seamstresses at any skill level.

  • Easy learning curve for a multi-function domestic sewing machine
Style: XR9550 - New Model
I recently decided to revisit my old hobby of sewing. I had a perfectly okay Brother sewing machine but the more I was using it, the more I became conscious of the many functions that newer sewing machines have that mine definitely didn’t. Some of the features that I won’t be willing to do without that this machine has include snap-on/snap-off presser feet, making a switch from one stitch type to another a matter of seconds rather than minutes; a drop-in bobbin that removes the need to fiddle with the upper thread/needle to pull up the bobbin thread before starting to sew as well as virtually ending the common problem of the bobbin thread snagging inside the machine; a library of stitches that come pre-programmed with optimal stitch length and width… selecting a stitch always starts with the preferred default values every time you select it; a better design for the the upper thread loading. They have somehow designed the unit so that the thread will automatically find itself on the correct side of the path being threaded instead of, as my older machine needed, requiring me to fiddle with flywheel on the right of the machine to get the different parts in the correct orientation to pass the thread around the parts correctly.; a built-in overstitch stitch for fray-prone fabrics; and lastly, the option to either use the foot peddle to control the speed of the stitches or choose to use the programmable stitch speed control for those of us who find their excitement, anxiety, or simple lack of patience leading to what feels like a high-speed chase where your current stitches are the barely in control car careening around the mountainous ess-curves, inches away from flying off into the valley below. This machine is well made, well designed, and wonderfully lightweight. I think it is a great starter machine for those wanting to learn the skills and tricks of sewing. ... show more

  • Very nice updated machine.
Style: XR9550 - New Model
Really great machine. Takes a little getting used to if you have had a basic machine. The reverse button is a little cumbersome but you will learn. The bobbin is easier and you can see it! The foot it comes with is a little weird as the opening is to the left. Well built and hope to have for years. This is only for light weight fabrics. I had it go through 3 pieces of cotton quilt plus a soft batting and it pounded like it didn't want to. Not heavy duty. But great for every day. Advise, look on line for how to video's on how to set up and run this machine. ... show more

  • Good machine
Style: XR9550 - New Model
I purchased a refurbished model and wound the bobbin and tried to thread the machine but I couldn’t get the take up lever to the highest point as the machine was frozen! The hand wheel would not move. I turned it off and on. I removed the throat plate and used the brush to see if there’s was lint or a thread caught. I read the manual and continued to get error 6 and the machine vibrated. I’ve sewn for 50 years and never had a machine perform this way. Although the proper way to turn the hand wheel is always counter clockwise, I gently turned it clockwise for several rotations and the back counterclockwise and the machine unlocked. I was able to get the take up lever in the correct position and threaded the machine. The needle threader worked perfectly. The stitch quality was perfect and the machine hummed. I was about to throw it in the trash but a few minutes later it was sewing like a dream machine. ... show more

  • Nice upgrade
Style: XR9550 - New Model
Nice upgrade from the Brother XM2701. Would recommend as an entry level machine that should get you years of good use. My old machine was still good but was very loud and missing some features that this machine has. Improvements and nice features: * Quieter (still makes a decent amount of noise, but I can listen to a podcast with this running at full speed and still hear the words, whereas my old machine would drown out the podcast) * Extension table * Free motion foot and ability to drop the feed dogs, great for quilting * Electronic selection of stitches. Automatically adjusts the needle position and other settings so you stitch right the first time. I like the stitch 43 for patchwork, which automatically gives you a 1/4" seam allowance from the right side of the presser foot. * Automatic buttonholes work great * Different decorative stitches * Ability to adjust the thread tension, stitch length, and stitch width Would I eventually like to upgrade to a fancy machine like a Bernina? Sure, but there's really no pressing need to right now since I own this machine. The benefits of a fancy machine would be things like more metal parts, longer support life, ability to oil the machine, etc. ... show more

  • Great Sewing Machine for Beginners
Style: XR9550 - New Model
I love this sewing machine for its reliable performance and reasonable price point. As a long-time user of Brother machines, I knew I was making a good choice with this one. It comes with all the essential components needed for beginners to learn how to sew, making it perfect for someone starting out. One minor drawback for me is the narrow distance between the "head" and the threading area, which can make tasks like changing the needle a bit awkward, especially for someone with average-sized hands like myself. Despite this, the machine effectively gets the job done. As someone who owns multiple machines across two homes for my alterations business, I appreciate the functionality this machine offers. However, a bit more space would make it even more perfect for my needs. Highly recommend for beginners looking for a reliable and affordable sewing machine. ... show more
