Users highlight its sturdy yet lightweight design, simple operation, and the variety of built-in stitches and features such as the automatic needle threader and LED selection box. • 👍 Features like automatic needle threader and well-placed LED selection box enhance user experience.
  • ⏳ Quick learning curve, allowing beginners to start projects almost immediately.
  • 👗 Suitable for a wide range of sewing tasks, from simple stitches to more complex dresses and embroidery.

Cons

  • 🛠 Some users find the included accessories lacking for specific tasks like quilting.
  • 💪 While generally durable, there are concerns about the build quality compared to vintage models.
  • 🧶 Issues with thread catching and breaking due to horizontal thread placement.
  • 📐 The mini table extender is cumbersome for some, and the pressure foot tension can't easily adjust for thicker materials.

Should I Buy It?

  • Easy learning curve for a multi-function domestic sewing machine
Size: XR9550
I recently decided to revisit my old hobby of sewing. I had a perfectly okay Brother sewing machine but the more I was using it, the more I became conscious of the many functions that newer sewing machines have that mine definitely didn’t. Some of the features that I won’t be willing to do without that this machine has include snap-on/snap-off presser feet, making a switch from one stitch type to another a matter of seconds rather than minutes; a drop-in bobbin that removes the need to fiddle with the upper thread/needle to pull up the bobbin thread before starting to sew as well as virtually ending the common problem of the bobbin thread snagging inside the machine; a library of stitches that come pre-programmed with optimal stitch length and width… selecting a stitch always starts with the preferred default values every time you select it; a better design for the the upper thread loading. They have somehow designed the unit so that the thread will automatically find itself on the correct side of the path being threaded instead of, as my older machine needed, requiring me to fiddle with flywheel on the right of the machine to get the different parts in the correct orientation to pass the thread around the parts correctly.; a built-in overstitch stitch for fray-prone fabrics; and lastly, the option to either use the foot peddle to control the speed of the stitches or choose to use the programmable stitch speed control for those of us who find their excitement, anxiety, or simple lack of patience leading to what feels like a high-speed chase where your current stitches are the barely in control car careening around the mountainous ess-curves, inches away from flying off into the valley below. This machine is well made, well designed, and wonderfully lightweight. I think it is a great starter machine for those wanting to learn the skills and tricks of sewing. ... show more

  • Great little machine but for one thing
Size: XR9550
I made this purchase in an emergency situation. I was away from home and was working on a special quilt when my 36 year old Viking machine stop working. There was no hope in getting it repaired as I was told several years ago when I had it in for a minor repair that future repairs would be impossible because they could no longer get the parts. The computer portion of the machine had died. So my search brought me to this Brother machine which had good reviews. The machine is great and was easy to set up because it came with one of the best instruction books I have seen in a long time. Needless to say I got the quilt top done in time for the long arm quilter to do the machine quilting. Plus this will be my new travel machine because it weighs half of what my Viking did. I only have one complaint. It comes with a hard plastic cover for storage and I cannot get it to fit down over the machine like it should. If someone also has had this problem please tell me your solution to getting it to fit. ... show more

  • It has pros and cons, over all a good machine.
Size: XR9550
Pros: I have now owned this machine 2 1/2 years so I feel comfortable making a review on it. The sewing machine is lightweight and portable. The table is very nice addition. A very affordable sewing machine for beginners or experienced people. Easy access to speed control and top drop in bobbin is a plus. Cons: At times these stitching pulls to the left. The decal on the automatic button has worn off. Does not affect the function of the machine. The machine is plastic and cannot be service. At this affordable price, I would just replace it when and if the time comes. ... show more

  • I trust the Brother Brand
Size: XR9550
I just received my Brother XR9550 this afternoon and it deserves a review. I have sewn for 63 years and the first machine I bought was a used Brother back in the 70’s. I used that machine for about 30 years until I bought a computerized machine. I then gave it to my sister. She used it for another 15 years before I purchased a new machine for her. I’ve known for a while I needed a smaller more portable machine than the honkin’ big heavy sewing/embroidery machine I purchased about 15 years ago. Sadly I have not had it serviced or updated for about 10 years and it quit working on me right in the middle of a large nest of jeans repairs. I went on Amazon and chose this model because I thought it would handle what I need to do until my other is back up and running. I am not disappointed. Straight out of the box everything works and sews beautifully. The instructions are clear and everything I’ve sample stitched is great. FYI Brother, the only 2 complaints I have aren’t critical just something you might improve on. 1) the light could be brighter 2) I’m having difficulty using the threader. The finger push or whatever you want to call it feels flimsy to me. When I push down to rotate the thread into the needle eye I hesitate as it feels like it’s bending under the pressure. Sewers I’m very happy with this Brother. It’s easy to operate and stitches beautifully. It’s lightweight has a carry case and does everything I need. I anticipate it will serve me well for many years. I trust the brand and I’m happy. ... show more

  • Love it
Size: XR9550
I've only had this machine a couple days, but had a lot of projects to complete in very little time. I was able to set it up and learn how it worked in no time. I was able to complete my projects and learn other options this machine has. I have back issues and being able to push a button instead of having to push down on a peddle sold me in the first place, but then being able to thread the needle without getting frustrated was the biggest selling point. I have a 1988 New Home that I love but it's starting to have small issues here and there. I would have cost me over $100 to tune it so that's why I went with this machine. ... show more
