Top Amazon Reviews

  • LOVE THE NEEDLE THREADER!
Style: GX37
Purchased the GX37 machine because it was less expensive than getting my old basic Singer repaired! Amazon apparently combines the reviews for model GX37 and LM2701, although the LM2701 is several years older, has fewer functions, includes fewer accessories, and is $23 more expensive. Seemed liked a no-brainer to go with the cheaper, newer model GX37, which comes with more options and accessories. I am glad I did! I’ve been sewing a long time but usually only basic things—hems, face masks, seam repairs, drapes, etc. Don’t usually use the fancy stitches or make buttonholes. I was able to unpack the GX37, follow the sticker guides right on the machine to thread it and immediately sew a practice seam without reading any instructions or watching the video. It’s pretty easy to figure out if you’ve used a sewing machine before. It comes with a bobbin already threaded and inserted, and with a 90/14 needle (for medium weight fabric) already installed. So all you need to do is thread the top thread and you’re ready to go! The machine produces perfectly “balanced” seams—meaning the tension is perfect with no puckering or pulling. I took some photos to show you. Very easy to use this machine! What I don’t like is minor: (1) The built-in storage compartment at the front of the machine - when you slide it out to remove it, all the stuff inside falls out because it is shaped more like a “bookcase” (open on one side) instead of a “bin”. That is not a handy way of storing extra stuff like bobbins. (2) The LED light is a little too dim. (3) Raising the presser foot feels a little awkward—it’s a plastic lever that flips out to the side. Every machine have ever owned has had a metal lever that flips “up” toward the back of the machine. (4) To change the needle, you need a screwdriver. They provide a dime-sized tool that serves as a screwdriver. To me, that is just something I’ll have to look for when I need to change the needle, and something to lose. It would be better to just turn a knob with your finger to change the needle. Overall, I think this is a great machine at a very reasonable price, and it includes many very nice features including 74 stitch functions and 37 built in stitches. I was so excited about the needle threader, that I immediately did it three times! As I get older and it’s harder to see to thread a needle, that is a VERY HANDY feature indeed! Both models GX37 and XM2701 come with the needle threader. It does not come with a case—but no sewing machine I have ever owned came with one. It fits fine in my old universal sewing machine case. It does come with a dust cover but I can’t see using that because I would probably not leave the sewing machine out. Overall, I am REALLY pleased with this sewing machine. What a great buy, and easy to use with *clearly written* instructions. Thank you BROTHER! UPDATE: I like this sewing machine so much, that when my daughter-in-law said she would like to have a sewing machine for her birthday, I bought her the same one! I write honest reviews to help others make informed purchases because I read reviews myself and appreciate how helpful they can be. I hope that my review helped you! ... show more

I'm not a professional or even great at sewing. But this machine works really good for my needs. Very user friendly.

  • Easy machine to set up
Style: GX37
I just received this Brother GX37 last night. I have not used it for any sewing projects, yet, but will do an update later. Right now, I wanted to remark of a couple of things that I discovered while setting it up. First of all, keep the manual by your side. It is easy to check various proceedures as you set up. My previous machine was a Brother Project Runway and I was certain that I knew the simple stuff but this GX37 does things a little differently. One is the top tension for winding the bobbin. The thread crosses itself in a way I didn't expect. Also, at first, I thought the spool pin was poorly designed because it was too short for my 300 yard thread spools. Then, on page 15 of the manual, while checking on how to wind the bobbin, there was a picture on how to extend the spool pin to its proper position. OK. A good reminder that sewing machine designs can vary, even within the same brand! The throat of this GX37 is slightly larger than my old machine. It measures 6" long and 4 1/2" high. My older one was 4 1/2" long and 4 1/2" high. I do a lot of art quilts and the extra space will help a lot. UPDATE: I have used the machine several times since getting it and am pleased with its performance. It is extremely easy to thread. My old machine was a major pain because the thread take up lever was so hard to get to and I often spent up to 5 mins--and a lot of cussing--trying to get the thread settled into it. This GX37 is a breeze. I don't have to think about what I am doing, it just happens. Also, the machine chugs along through multiple layers like a work horse. The reverse stitch lever is nice, too. My old machine would only stitch once backward. That was so frustrating when I needed to back track a few steps. This one will let me stitch backward as much as I want. The GX37 is simple and basic but I don't need any more than that so I am quite happy. ... show more

  • Easy to use
Style: GX37 + Case
Easy to thread and use. Quiet operation. Lighter than some machines. Like the one step button hole maker. After getting the knack for using the needle threader, I really appreciate that. I wish it had a way to drop the feed dogs. Good machine for beginners and every day sewing.

  • Excellent value for a beginner machine.
Style: GX37
While I have used a few machines, some much nicer than this, I bought this to do some simple projects as a relative beginner and have been impressed from start to finish. While my expectations were low this machine has performed very well and I'm giving it 5 stars not because it is an amazing sewing machine but because of what you get for your money. If you're trying to do some basic projects this will definitely get them done. I've used this to add webbing to canvas and at the thickest point had 4 layers of canvas and 2 layers of webbing and it had no trouble getting it done. That being said it felt like that was about as much as it could handle. If you have realistic expectations I think you will love this machine. I'll add that the threading and bobbin access/spinning are very user friendly. The manual provides excellent instruction, advice, and diagrams. ... show more
