As a property manager dealing with older apartment buildings, you quickly learn that getting furniture up narrow staircases can turn into a full blown logistics problem. Traditional box springs are the worst. If they don’t bend, they don’t go up the stairs. That’s where something like this buildable box spring actually makes sense. It ships in pieces, so you can carry the parts upstairs and assemble it directly in the unit. For tight staircases, older buildings, or walk-ups, that alone can save a ton of frustration. Assembly is pretty straightforward. It’s basically a heavy-duty metal frame that bolts together with a fabric cover that zips around it. Once it’s put together it feels sturdy and does exactly what a box spring is supposed to do, which is provide a solid foundation and proper height for the mattress. Most modern metal box spring foundations use steel frames and include the hardware and tools needed for assembly, which keeps setup fairly simple. The only reason I didn’t rate it higher comes down to value. When you step back and look at it objectively, you are essentially paying a fairly high price for a hollow metal frame and a cover. Functionally it works, but the cost can feel a little steep for what it is. That said, if you’re dealing with apartment buildings, basements, or staircases where a traditional box spring physically will not fit, this type of assemble-in-place design can be a lifesaver. Not wanting to purchase 2 box springs, I found this box spring bed base to be the perfect solution. My husband and I put it together…it took about a hour…wasn’t hard just time consuming. Directions were good…all screws lined up…no problems there. It’s solid and fits my king bed perfectly. We have been sleeping on it for 4 nights now and not one squeak has been heard. It doesn’t shift or move getting in or out of bed…we got the 9” and it was the perfect height. The price was better than others we looked at. I am very pleased with it.
