There are a whole lot of BlueTooth speakers out there, and honestly some of them aren't too bad. But most are built to hit a certain (usually low) price point, and suffer as a result. My wife likes to listen to music from her smartphone while working around the house. Even though I have to be impressed at the sound you can get from a wafer-thin phone, it's just not "good". Enter the Bose SoundLink speaker, to fix this lack of sound quality. The first thing you're going to notice about the device (in the box or out) is that it is HEAVY for such a diminutive speaker. Having worked in professional sound for years (OK, long ago...) you soon find that there's really no substitute for mass when you're designing and building speakers. You can't get good sound without a massive magnet on the speaker, and the housing (case) has to be VERY rigid to get the best sound. Bose is kind of a master of both of those concepts, and knows how to maximize what you can get out of a given size speaker. Yes, this small, battery powered speaker isn't going to compete with a set of bookshelf monitor speakers driven by a 50 pound amplifier through pinky-size copper cables. But it's going to provide perfectly acceptable (by my "hi-fi standards") sound quality. Most folks who haven't dabbled in professional sound will be even more impressed. The sound quality is on par with the (also excellent) Sonos systems, though the operating concept is quite different. The Bose speaker is "just" a BlueTooth speaker, which to me is a feature, not a shortcoming. The other options can get more complicated and fiddly to operate since you have to access music through the app that controls the speakers. The Bose is just "pair and listen". Pairing was very straightforward and quick, and intuitive. Sound quality is really quite good, with a surprising amount of bass (the hardest thing to do in a small speaker), which is one of the specialties of Bose speaker systems for many decades. I compared this to my JBL speaker. A couple things. The clarity is better on the Bose when the volume is turned up compared to the JBL. But the JBL has more bass. So this can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you like your music. The battery life is about the same so there are no issues there. It is easy to use and pair with any device. It charges fast so that is a plus. I think it is a little pricey but you are getting the Bose quality. I am expecting months if not years out of this for the price. I will update if it does not hold up. We are on our 2nd JBL-they all seem to stop charging. JBL may be cheaper, but we are on our 2nd one in 2 years. ... show more

This sound box is small in size; it's about 8 1/2 (W)" x 4" (H) x 2" (D); it's not light weighted but the weight for sure adds a great quality feel to the product. The finish is very stylish and the design combines both fabric and aluminum that adds high tech feel while comes with soft element. Pairing is fair easy and it would resume the connection immediately when required. The sound quality is super clear and crispy; the high and low are so well balanced. Surprising that the sound level can be adjusted loud without broken/static electric noise. This is a great portable speaker for either in the house or on the road.
