  • Noise cancellation really works better than others I've tried
I balked at buying the Bose, because I thought it was overpriced, and that probably all the manufacturers used the same generic digital signal processing chip. I've had two other inexpensive NC headsets, and thought they worked alright. The first non-Bose headset, I had two of, because the cables kept fraying and breaking. Can't remember the brand name anymore, but they were only about $35, so I thought, well, just my bad luck. Replaced them with inexpensive ($50) Sony headsets, and the Sony cables are durable, but the sound quality and cancellation wasn't quite as good, to my ears. Nevertheless, I kept the Sonys (and still have them), thinking again that Bose was just too darned expensive. Then I saw one day in the classroom that I work in, that there were several Bose QC25 headsets that the school had purchased, so I thought, hey, here's a chance to see if they're really worth all that money. The teacher let me borrow a pair, and as I left the school, I parked on the street, with my windows down, to listen to the car traffic go by, and try these out in an A/B test with the Sony NC headsets. Wow! It took me all of about 30 seconds to decide that they were worth the money. One of the reasons, perhaps, that they work so well, is that the headset completely covers my ear, and the Sony headsets did not have complete ear coverage. I've worn them for long periods of time, without discomfort, although if I wear them on the treadmill in the gym, they need to be wiped off from the perspiration on my head. My first A/B test with the Bose QC25 was to put it on, without plugging it into any device, and just switch the NC on and off, as cars and trucks passed by on the street. The results were simple: switched off, there was car noise; switched on, there was silence. I ordered a pair immediately, and have been happy with them ever since. They are great at cancelling droning noises, such as cars, or airplane engines, but not so good at nearby conversations. I do use them when working in a library, and they do a fair job of cancelling out the noisy kids at the next table, but not as profound as engine noise reduction. The big advantage I see to this model is that they use a single AAA battery, which lasts me about a week of listening to audiobooks, and the case has a holder for a spare battery. A rechargeable AAA battery works just fine, and the later model Bose headsets use some sort of proprietary non-replaceable battery, which in my view is a deal breaker. Your views about the bluetooth feature may make you think that the later Bose model would be better, but in my mind it's not, due to the many documented problems with bluetooth. These wired headsets just simply work, with anything that has a standard audio jack. The cable is not an inconvenience for me, and the easily replaceable AAA battery is a big plus. As for the cable, when I unpacked the box and saw it, my first thought was that if these expensive cables fray and break, I'm going to be out a bunch of money to replace them. Not true, you can buy generic replacement cables on Amazon, I did buy a couple, tried them, out, and tossed them into the drawer as backups, after finding that they worked just fine. I got two generic cables for less than the price of one Bose cable. My only advice as to these cables is this: they come in two flavors; one works only with Android and generic devices, and the other flavor works with Apple. Make sure you order the correct one for your device. I have used the Bose QC25 in place of my Plantronics bluetooth on my phone (android), and they work just fine, although legally I can't use them if I am driving, and must use my little hands-free earbud instead. They also work fine on my laptop, and a little generic MP3 player. The sound level is about the same in these headsets, with the power on or off, but they do sound a lot better with the power on. In short, spend the money, they're worth it. ... show more

  • Are Comfortable and are Excellent at Noise Cancelling
I have owned 3 ANC headphones. First was the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9, which I bought about 3 years ago. I really liked them. Were comfortable. Worked great for cancelling airplane noise and other sounds. When walking, turning the noise cancelling to "high" made everything go quiet. I could see people speaking, but could hardly hear them. I believe I paid around $200 for them ($100 less then the Bose 25.) They finally "died" and I bought a "cheap" set of Saxhorn ANC J2's. They are decent, but where nowhere close to the Audio-Technica set. I finally decided to spend the $300 and get a set of Bose Quiet Comfort 25 Noise Cancelling phones. I don't regret it. I've only had them a few weeks, but they are by far the best ANC headphones I've owned. The pluses: Lightweight. Comfortable fit. Pads are nice and soft. Small, compact carrying case Uses a AAA battery to run the noise cancelling circuitry. Easy to change out the battery. Much more convenient than a rechargeable. Will work even without the battery. However the sound quality is poor. For me, sound quality is excellent with the ANC on. Basses are strong without being too booming. Midrange and highs are clear. I can hear separate instruments. I've played pop and classical music and both sound great. (I am Not an audiophile.) When walking with the ANC on, I have to be extra careful, because traffic noise is almost completely muffled. Even talking is much less noticeable. My wife has to shake me to get my attention when I have them on. I haven't used them on a plane yet, but expect them to be very effective. (I read "somewhere" that the Bose cancel around 96-97% of noise. The Audio-technica about 94-95%; the rest about 90% or less.) After using the Bose, I agree. For me, there is no "hiss" when the ANC is on and no music is playing. They put you in a cocoon of quiet. The 6 foot cord is fine. It plugs into my phone or tablet without any issues. (I have Samsung devices/Android.) Build quality appears good. Minuses: The straight end of the cord that plugs into the headphones appears to be a 2.5mm plug, instead of the more common 3.5mm. I don't know why Bose elected to do that. It doesn't make sense. They are expensive. Overall, these are the best noise cancelling headphones available. I would rate the Audio-technica second. Forget the others. ... show more

  • Impressive noise cancelling! High quality product 10/10 would recommend!!!
Bose headphones are worth every cent. Bose has never disappointed me with their products and I intend to keep buying them. The noise cancelling on these are very exceptional. That feature runs on a AAA battery and lasts for a decent number of hours. It comes with one battery in the box for out-of-the-box use. I have a large fan in the corner of my room and after I turn noise cancelling on, the constant noise of the fan is completely gone. The ear cups on these are super comfortable and provide a great seal. The cushioning on the top is comfortable as well and doesn't get greasy or gross in any way. The auxiliary cable on it is very flexible and durable. The microphone is good and clear for calls or gaming. In my personal use, I game with these headphones on my PC. I prefer these over gaming headphones any day due to the overall sound quality, comfortability, and noise cancelling feature. They do come with a very nice carrying case that should help them from being crushed if you put them in a backpack or bag. The visual aesthetics of these are very pleasing. They're very nice to look at and don't look for feel bulky in anyway. I have a pair of Sony MDRX-950-bt and they have great bass but they honestly look ridiculous wearing. I would never wear then in public due to the ridiculous size. The bose quiet comfort on the other hand, I could confidently wear anywear and feel comfortable with. Overall these headphones are worth the money and I would highly recommend if you prefer clear, crisp sound with outstanding noise cancelling. ... show more

  • Definitely keep out the noise
I was a little reluctant to buy these based on some reports that they fail for a portion of owners after short use. But I decided this failure is probably due to using the carry case which is provided by Bose, which requires quite a bit of twisting of the ear pieces to downsize them for storage, coupled with fairly frail wiring. I opted to buy another carry case that does not require any twisting for storage, thinking this might prevent that issue. I'll let you know if they fail anyway. So far I have been impressed with them in actual use. I've used them on city buses and in the car while traveling as a passenger. The music quality is fine for travel, and the noise reduction is substantial. On the bus, if I'm listening to music at a low volume, I can't hear bus engine or braking noise, cell phone chatter, or misc noises, but I can still hear the bus stop announcements ( I usually sit near the front of the bus). In the car, even with no music on, engine and road noise completely disappear, nor can I hear my wife cursing at other drivers, unless she's really screaming. She has to signal me with her hands when she wants to talk to me. I haven't had a chance to use them yet on an aircraft, but we are headed to Europe this summer, so will get to test them on the way out and back. I also carry my earbuds with me, which themselves are pretty isolating (though not attenuating); this in case I have the misfortune of sitting near a screaming baby. I'm sure the buds, plus covering the ears with the Bose will cancel even that noise. I really feel for babies on planes, they don't know how to clear their ears, so probably are in terrible pan with the pressure changes, but I definitely do not want to share their pain on a long trip. My only issues with the headphones: 1) The plug going in to the headphones, tends to pull out rather easily part way, this leaves the right ear without any music. I resolved this by taking the shirt clip off an older pair of headphones and putting this on the cord. 2) I find it a little tricky to get the door open on the phones where the battery goes in. Fortunately, the battery seems to last a long time, so you shouldn't have to change it much. Its also a little hard to read the tiny + and - markings to place the battery in the slot in the correct direction. So note which way this goes while you are in bright light, and memorize it in case you have to do it in low light. I've been using the headphones with my Sansa Clip, so far this has had more than adequate power to drive the headphones with no issues at the volumes I listen, which is not usually very loud, without any noticeable distortion. Of course with the Sansa, I don't have control of volume with the switch on the Bose cord, since its not an Android device, but I don't find this to be a problem. Haven't gotten around to trying them on my Nexus 7. I'm actually not a fan of the Bose home systems that I have listened to, they all seem a bit bassy, muddy and unfocused, but one has to notice that one of Bose major production items, aside from home speakers, is headphones for professional pilots. I think its fair to say they know noise attenuation. So far I'm glad I got these, even if they do seem a bit pricey. Will write a follow up review if they don't hold up, in spite of the bigger carrying case. ... show more

  • Got a noisy housemate? Get these, for your sanity's sake.
Oh, holy Jesus, I needed these. I have a roommate that just never ever ever EVER shuts up and the second I put these on it was blessed silence. Audio quality is superb as to be expected from Bose. I've had them on for hours and the comfort level is very good compared to the cheap stuff from Dollar General or Walmart. Listening to music, you can switch the noise cancellation off to conserve battery power as the great audio quality will overpower most things (the bass is especially good for a set of headphones). But if you just want to read a book in peace without distraction (Ahem....hello, noisy roomate or neighbor) just put them on and at the slide of a button there is serenity. It's almost shocking at first actually. I can still hear a loud TV if I just have it on noise reduction without anything coming through like music or a game but it's very very muffled. Another great thing about these is that I usually have my headphones plugged into my laptop and occasionally I get up, forget I have them on and break the cord rendering the headphones useless. The cord on this is detachable so if I pull a boneheaded play, I either pull the cord out or break it, but I don't kill a $300 set of headphones. I even ordered an extra cord because I know I am eventually going to break this one though it looks pretty sturdy compared to store bought ones. There are volume controls on the wire and a mic for your phone hangs in the right spot if you want to plug it to your cellphone though I haven't tried it out yet because nobody loves me (everybody hates me, I'm gonna go eat worms). Oh, and I ordered the headphones and received them within 24 hours with the whopping $3 price tag for one day shipping on Amazon Prime. Now I can see him, my roommate, yapping away but can't hear a thing. It really is pretty amazing. Sanity restored. $300 may seem like a lot of money for a set of headphones but your sanity is priceless. ... show more

  • Good for noisy environments / Bad for quality recordings
As a headphone collector I think price point is important in determining value, I am reviewing these in the $150-200 range as that Is what I paid for them. While I am reluctant to give these a 5 star because of a couple shortcomings, ultimately they well fulfill the role I purchased them for so I suppose that is all that really matters right? I bought these for a pair of headphones that was: -Light -Compact/Easy to carry -Noise cancelling In these regards, I feel like these are a good pair of cans. I have used these on 10 hours of airplane travel now and use them very often now that my computer is next to my washer/dryer :\ I am above all impressed with the sound cancellation, when these are turned on, it sounds like the dryer turns off. They are light weight and the newer model with the removable cord makes them very easy to store and I do not worry about the cord giving out as I can replace it if I have to. The downsides. A) These things devour batteries. Discount batteries will be consumed in a single trip so don't bother with those. I try to employ rechargeable batteries for these guys but I still carry name brand back ups when I travel because they can go at any time. It is the price you pay for decent isolation, and it is worth it. B) Sound quality is poor for this price range. My personal headphone collection spans sets from $50-$1000, and I can tell you with confidence that for the ~$200 price point, these are woeful under performers. They require being powered on almost all the time to reach acceptable quality (Which feeds into con A as this burns the battery fast). That said, I STILL give them 5 stars because the noise cancelling and design are above average, and that is what you should be buying these for if you are considering them. Summary = Do not expect audiophile level quality from these. Heck you can find cans at half the cost that sound better, but if you are looking for a light set of cans to see you through high background noise environments without breaking the bank, you've got a solid set right here, no doubt about it. ... show more

  • Incredible Noise Canceling + no defective issues!!
I'm going to keep this fairly short, but I've always wanted a pair of Bose QCs because from a noise canceling perspective, I haven't seen anything come close. I had difficulty wanting to shell out 300+ for these but when they went on sale during black friday/cyber monday for ~100, I immediately grabbed a pair. These have been GREAT. I've traveled with them, I've slept with them when it was loud outside and they've held up well. The battery life has also surprised me! The battery it came with was supposed to last 36 hours which doesn't sound like a long time, but I don't like to use QC for everything because 1) it's not necessary and 2) it can get uncomfortable from the "pressure" feeling generated from the negative/canceling sound waves. Thus, the first battery ended up lasting me 3 weeks to a month or so? Sound quality itself is fine, nothing mind boggling but still quite enjoyable, I personally like other headphones like Audio technica more as I feel the sound feels richer. Lastly, the biggest issue I wanted to tackle in this review were the potential defective issues. I was really worried from reading all the reviews and I still think it could be warranted, however, I've had no issues so far and I've pretty much used them as my daily drivers (except when I go to the gym, obviously). I've taken good care of them, disconnected the cables/stored them away when not using them and no problems so far! My only note is that when plugging the cable into your headphones, listen for the second "click". When I was using it the first go around, occasionally the second ear cup would have no sound, and I thought it was defective, but you just have to make sure it's completely plugged in. In short, if you want a pair of noise canceling headphones, I absolutely recommend these, especially when they're on sale! ... show more

  • Second try, both pairs malfunctioned after 1 week. Giving up.
I'm about to return my second pair of Bose QC25s. I work in an office with a lot of noisy coworkers and was looking for headphones with active noise cancelling that would help block them out. The QC25s worked great for the first week; they cut down on the voice noise significantly, eliminated various ambient noise like keyboard clicks completely & were very comfortable to wear. Sound quality was just fine; I listen to a lot of podcasts and some music, am not terribly picky about bass, etc. I'd read some comments about fragile wiring, so I kept them on my desk at work and was very careful to put them on & take them off gently. After about 1 week of use my first pair developed an issue - they would intermittently produce loud pops or clicks. After a lot of trial & error, the issue seems to be with the active noise cancelling switch on the side of the headphone. If I moved my head quickly or tapped the headphone around the switch, noise cancelling would turn off with a loud pop and then after a second or two, turn back on with another pop. I had a coworker try out the headphones; he experienced the same issue. I also tried the headphones with my computer at home. I tried just living with the pops for a day, but it was just too irritating, I couldn't do it. I returned them to Amazon & got a replacement pair. After a week using the new pair, they began having the same issue. I contacted Bose a week ago about the problem, but have not heard back from them. I would love to have a functional pair of the QC25s - except for this issue, I thought they were great. Too bad. ... show more
