As one half of the Dynamic Duo, I'll let you in on the action. One day I'm watching Bolt on TV, and the next thing I know I'm working alongside my all- time favorite hero in stealth mode! We have to make it all the way from New York City to Hollywood to defeat the forces of evil and save the lovely Miss Penny from ultimate peril. But don't worry -- armed with Bolt's "Super-Bark" and my rolling ball of thunder, we're ready for anything. You won't believe the high-flying, death-defying stunts we have to pull off along the way. Watch us in action as we unleash the power. It's awesome. No, it's beyond awesome. It's BE-awesome! There's danger at every turn, but with Bolt at my side, I fear nothing. I FEEL ALIVE! Bolt is a funny animated film about a dog who thinks he has superpowers. It is also a movie about friendship, perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself. Everyone knows that superheroes on television are not real, but super-dog Bolt (John Travolta) is a canine star who has been carefully raised to believe that he really possesses superpowers. Bolt is completely devoted to his human co-star Penny (Miley Cyrus), so when Penny is captured by the evil Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell) in their latest television episode and then Bolt accidentally gets loose in the real world, Bolt sets off on a journey to save her. Bolt is confounded when his super powers are suddenly ineffective, but inspiration strikes and Bolt quickly discovers the mysterious, power-stealing effects of Styrofoam packing peanuts. An encounter with alley cat Mittens (Susie Essman) gives Bolt some eye-opening lessons about being a real dog in the real world, while star-struck, ball-enclosed hamster Rhino (Mark Walton) revels in the opportunity to serve as Bolt's sidekick in the quest to rescue Penny. The trio traverses the United States from waffle house to waffle house on a hysterical quest to find Penny and prove that the relationship between Penny and Bolt is real. In the end, Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino learn that everyone is special in their own way and they discover the true power of believing in oneself and one's friends. Select theaters showed Bolt in Real-D 3-D which features some nice effects, but the film is probably equally enjoyable in the traditional format. I love watching this movie with my little kids. Bolt is a good one. Arrived perfectly.

While the plot was predictable, the way it was carried out was great. It was such a good movie that the predictable plot could be overlooked and made almost refreshing. The dog reminded me of my dog and the cat reminded me of my cat and the hampster reminded me of my guinea pig. The bonds between them all and the girl just sum up how I feel about a dog's loyalty and cat's personality and the feisty little rodent sidekick. :) As other reviewers have said, the animation and effects/characters/CG is the best Disney CG so far (not counting Pixar/Disney CG in this). They perfected the characteristics and traits of real animals in the animation of the animals, but also was able to personify the animals as well. This is one of John Travolta's best work I think - he did such a good job as the voice of Bolt that I didn't even realize it was him (which when you don't realize an actor is that actor, I think that means they did a fantastic job). I loved the duet between Bolt (Travolta) and Penny (Miley Cyrus) and the little 2-D animation for the end credits - there are just so many things about this movie that I loved - it was all the details and small things they did to make it realistic. It was believable and cute and sweet and heart-wrenching and touching. Maybe it's because I love animals and all the animals in this movie reminded me of mine or others I have met, but I was pleasantly surprised and endeared by this movie when I wasn't expecting much of anything out of Disney (CG) movies anymore. My only regret with this movie was I got to see an early plot/story outline and artwork for the movie back when it was in preproduction (Disney came and did a presentation at my college on the movies they were making and this was one of them), and it seemed so much more original. The cat was supposed to be a mechanic with an eyepatch, and Bolt was a TV star, but more of a pampered one and the film was at that time titled "American Dog" and it was more about Bolt becoming his own person rather than just the "movie star." He was still on a cross-country journey out to rescue his owner (Penny) but there seemed to be more originality to the story and characters. Overall, this film turned out really well, but I just wonder what it COULD have been had it been more original and not so cookie-cutter. The artist that designed and created Lilo and Stitch was also the one to come up with the original story/character designs and while the animals look really similar to how they did in preproduction, I would have liked to have seen his ideas be the ones they used for the final version. I think the area that has the most impact in this movie is its emotional content. If you love your pets (dogs especially) and know that they will do anything for you, then you will also like this movie. If all you care about is a surprising new story idea, then you probably won't like it. P.S. The pigeons' animation (and probably their accents) nailed it. ... show more

It's been a long time since we've cared for an animated Disney film (we've big Pixar fans), but there is something about this dog and his friend Penny that really gets my kids (ages 2 and 4). They love Bolt, they love Rhino the hamster, and they love to play "Penny and Bolt," which involves them running around in circles, calling each other 'Penny' and 'Bolt.' After checking this out of the library many a time, I finally broke down and bought a copy. It's a cute film, and Rhino really steals the show. ... show more

    • Sweet (and sometimes Salty) Story of a Hero Dog and his Opening to Understanding The World
This one's a really sweet fil that, on the surface, is basically a fast-paced adventure about a super dog and his adventures out in the real world. But it's a lot more than that, too. It serves as a surprisingly touching story of identity, friendship, and going for what really matters in life. At its core, BOLT is about a young girl and her loyal dog (both actors). She knows she's an actor, but poor Bolt seems to really believe he’s a superhero because that’s all he’s ever known. He barks and things blow up, etc. But as the story unfolds, Bolt and we in the audience get to see there’s so much more than saving the world or chasing fame and fortune. Clearly, it's a morality tale (for children as well as adults) reminding us that having a safe, loving home and friends (human or animal who care about us is THE ULTIMATE prize in life!. I like that the film, ironically, also takes on the entertainment industry, subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) highlighting exploitation of animals and child actors. And it very pointedly reminds us that agents and execs will almost always prioritize profit over people. They definitely don't come out looking good! All in all, this is a cool animated film. Good story line, sufficient action and sufficient heart-felt emotion... that it serves very well in that sweet space between social commentary and a family-friendly presentation that works!     • Charming and Delightful for the Entire Family
I've now seen Bolt twice, once in 2D and now in 3D; both times we found the movie to be a heartwarming adventure that focuses on the triumph of good over evil and the great importance of friends and faithful love. The movie is really fun to watch and picks up the viewers and carries them along for a fast paced adventure across the entire United States. The sound and picture are both excellent and the 3D version is very effective. The 3D version is presently only available through Sony for purchasers of a Sony 3D TV. That is similar to the Panasonic program which offers Avatar in 3D to purchasers of a Panasonic 3D TV. I suspect they will both be available for general purchase within a year or so. The story is of a girl and her dog that just happens to hit the big time in Hollywood as stars of an adventure series, but are then separated by an unfortunate set of circumstances. The story follows the adventures of the dog, Bolt, who is devoted to his beloved girl and determined to find her again. Bolt's life is complicated by one awkward misconception; he has come to believe that the special effects wonders he performs on stage are all real; he believes he can really do all of those miraculous things he appears to do courtesy of the special effects and stage props. During his journey home he encounters all sorts of adventures which teach him the reality of his personal strengths and weaknesses and the value of friendship. The movie is remarkable in its clear cut presentation of high moral and ethical principles; I definitely recommend it as a first-rate movie for all of the family! ... show more

I admit it, I'm 23 years old and this is one of my favorite movies. It's witty, funny, entertaining and it has a surprisingly intriguing storyline. The voice acting is superb. John Travolta does an incredible job and (surprisingly) Miley Cyrus does an excellent job with her character Penny. The supporting voice actors are equally as superb as their superstar counter-parts. Rhino, the hamster, is by far the most fully awesome character to appear in a Disney movie in a long, long time!! I recommend this movie to everyone! We all need a good laugh sometimes and you will definitely be laughing when you hear a tiny hamster say "SABOTEUR!" Or when a New York City Pigeon says "You got your head stuck pretty good, huh guy? Oh yeah, that is one stuck melon!" I have no doubt that almost every child who watches this movie will love it! On the other hand, most adults scoff at the idea of watching a "kid's movie". Once past the pre-teen years of our lives, we are led to believe that it is time to "grow-up" and "stop acting like a child", but I say what's wrong with staying young at heart?? There's no age limit for movies! Enjoy a Disney movie! Have some fun! Don't take life too seriously! Watch BOLT and you will feel FULLY AWESOME for days, weeks, or maybe even months!! ... show more
