Description

Maybe he didn't always know best, but beginning in 1954, insurance salesman Jim Anderson (Robert Young) of Springfield, Ohio, was America's favorite head of household. Father Knows Best premiered on CBS in October, 1954 and has been part of the American cultural fabric ever since. The program's depiction of a "typical" mid-century, middle-class, Midwestern American family is fondly remembered by many of us who grew up watching the show and rather enviously thinking: "Oh. So this is what happens in all the other houses." Margaret Anderson (Jane Wyatt) charmed us as the levelheaded domestic diva who stood faithfully behind the strong and benevolent father. Their three children—sophisticated teen Betty (Elinor Donahue), chronically befuddled 14-year-old brother "Bud" (Billy Gray) and precocious little sister Kathy (Lauren Chapin)—faced the challenges of growing up right alongside of us. And in episode after episode, Jim and Margaret treated their children's youthful transgressions with authority, empathy and wisdom. By the end of each half hour, we'd all learned our lesson. Join Jim and Margaret and "Princess," "Bud" and "Kitten" in their very first year as everyone's favorite '50s family in Father Knows Best. Bonus Content: Disc 4 - Father Knows Best Season One: Daddy's Girls with Lauren Chapin and Elinor Donahue: All-New Interviews with the Actresses Who Played The Anderson Sisters, Kathy and Betty.Robert Young's Home Movies: Beautiful Footage of Robert Young's Real-Life Family, Shot Between the 1930s and the 1970s, Reveals the Inspiration Behind Much of Father Knows Best. • Classic Television With Family Values
The Father Knows Best box set looks very nice for a classic TV collection. The set arrived undamaged and it unwraps to reveal the complete series broken up into three volumes. Each volume is arranged on flip trays for easy disc access, and the episode titles and air dates are listed. The packaging is nice except for one thing. The box promises a variety of special features, but they are not listed anywhere on the discs or inserts. Guess we just have to watch for them to show up on random discs throughout the series. We’ve only sampled disc one, and there was some sort of bonus listed, so we’ll have to see what it is. As for the show itself, we know it’s a classic. We’ve seen random episodes here and there over the years, but never the whole series. We expect it to be fun to watch because this kind of 50’s show is along the same line of family values as The Adventures of Ozzie And Harriet and Leave It To Beaver. Sampling the early episodes, we’ve been introduced to the family and they all seem likeable. Well, to be honest, the mother seems a little out of place. Speaking with the heavy society accent, she doesn’t exactly seem like the all-American Midwestern housewife. Guess we’ll get used to her. After all, there was a certain properness to 50’s TV. Real people didn’t vacuum in heels and pearls. We're lookin' at you, Harriet and June. LOL! In the early episodes, we also see the irony in the fact that the show is called FATHER Knows Best, yet he seems to be the pushover in the family. The wife and kids are the ones always getting their way. As for quality, the DVDs are okay. We see some flaws inherent with old shows, so it doesn’t look like the films were highly remastered. Same with the sound. But the show is watchable, so we expect to enjoy it as we make our way through the series. And like all DVD series, we hope that ALL the discs play well and we don’t end up with corrupted episodes here and there throughout the series. ... show more

  • A great series
I finally finished watching all 30 of these DVD's, and they all played perfectly. No skips or bad DVD's at all. And the picture quality of all the episodes was excellent. Now for a few minor cons. There are no subtitles options in any of the discs. Also, during the "Menu" screen the theme music plays constantly, which can be a little irritating (at least for me). Also, the discs come in three plastic cases. Two of the cases were broken when I received them, and the third one fell apart while I was removing the discs. I threw the cases away and saved the DVD's in a DVD wallet I have. All together, I enjoyed watching these programs very much. This is one of my favorite shows. Worth every penny of what I paid! ... show more

  • How I love this show!!!
This is not even my era (born in 1970 - adolescence and teens spent in the 80’s). But I found this show on tv during the COVID pandemic and it was so utterly soothing. I felt like I wanted to transport myself and become a member of the Anderson family, (and I had a great childhood with loving parents!) But this show is just an idyllic world! It seems like they stopped playing the show on tv, so I had to buy the series! ... show more
