  • A budget laser engraver that's a little too "budget"
Color: 5W Standard Size: 5W
NOTE: This is a review for the 10W BlazeX, but everything I mentioned should also apply to the the 5W version. First the bad: You should know that this thing requires a fair amount of assembly. That's pretty common for lower-end consumer hobbyist stuff like this. (Or, at least it used to be.) The weird part is that you have to assemble the amber-colored UV cover, of all things. It comes as a set of panels in a flat pack, and you have to screw them together with some very tiny screws. It's an awkward process that didn't leave me very confident in its sturdiness. Once the cover was assembled and attached to the machine, it felt a little less flimsy, but the fit between the pieces still left a lot to be desired. In my case, the door refused to stay latched because an angle was slightly off, so I had to tape it shut in order to get the machine to operate. Everything about the BlazeX reminds of what 3D printer DIY kits were like ten years ago: exposed wiring, awkward placement of the power supply (in the front), minimal interface, and clunky software. In a way, I get it. They are offering a 10W laser at a budget price, and corners have to be cut. But even sub-$200 resin 3D printers manage to come with a single-piece, molded UV cover. I was also disappointed that the listed bed size (11"x14") is a little deceptive. The actual usable area seems to be considerably smaller. I decided to spring for the optional camera, which helps visually align images onto the material being engraved. It was a nearly $100 upgrade for a cheap USB cam that you could literally buy off Aliexpress for a few bucks. The camera came with a detached USB cord that you had to assemble with a tiny 6-pin electrical connector. And the camera doesn't even plug into the engraver. It actually plugs into your computer, along with the BlazeX itself, which also takes up a USB port. If you're using a laptop, I'd strongly recommend buying a USB hub. And that leads me to the software. The BlazeX comes with an application called CutLabX. I installed it, along with various drivers that are included on the SD card. As soon as I launched the app, it immediately tried to sell me some SVG files to download. Not a good sign. The app itself seemed pretty clunky by 2026 standards, and the functions weren't very intuitive. So I downloaded and installed Lightburn, which is the standard app for laser cutters/engravers. It's a paid program that's fairly pricey, so I expected something really polished and intuitive. Unfortunately, it's anything but. If you're like me, and you came to laser engraving via 3D printing, you are going to be in for a surprise. Compared to modern 3D slicers, like Bambu Labs, Cura, Lychee, etc., the software for laser engravers looks like something from the late 90s. The interfaces are sparse, ugly, and non-intuitve. It's like getting slapped in the face with a wet towel. After struggling to get Lightburn to recognize the camera, I switched back to CutLabX - and then spent another hour getting the camera calibrated. The instruction manuals that come with the BlazeX are translated from Chinese, and there parts that leave out critical details, particularly where camera calibration and alignment are concerned. At one point, the program opened a second window that I couldn't see because it was BEHIND the interface, and it took me half an hour to realize that was the reason I couldn't finish calibration. Now for the good: The BlazeX is one of the most accessible 10W engravers I found in terms of budget. In other words, it's cheap. Yes, it's cheaply made, but it comes with some things that are options on other engravers at a similar price point, like a honeycomb bed, an exhaust fan, and a UV cover. It's compact: It's small enough to take to craft fairs, but powerful enough to cut and engrave a variety of materials. (Whether I would trust the flimsy UV cover to hold up to that kind of use is a whole other story.) It works: Once you get past the camera calibration, the rest of the operation is pretty straight forward. Even though it's vastly overpriced, the camera is a must-have, since it makes precise alignment with the object to be engraved so much easier. I did some test engravings on some basswood plywood sheets, and the results were pretty darn good. Ultimately, I purchased the BlazeX to test the waters with laser engraving before I invested more money. But if I had it to do over again, I would have spent the extra few hundred dollars and bought something like the xTool M2 with dual cameras, that at least looks sturdier more polished. ... show more
