  • not 5 stars because, like other Black Diamond mittens, they're just too tight despite too long
When I took these Absolute Mitts out of the box, I knew I was in love. My hands need so much extra warmth, and these were clearly the absolute ultimate in warmth. Then I put them on. Just as with the other Black Diamond gloves I'd tried, these were too narrow even while being too long. The thumb is the tightest, and my thumbs aren't fat at all. The wrist is narrow, too (even with the strap let out *all* the way), but the palm area at least is not nearly as constricting as the other Black Diamond style I tried (but that style wasn't as warm, either). What is it about Black Diamond and narrowly-proportioned gloves? Does every person in their design department have especially narrow hands? I've never had this problem with any other brand of gloves I've bought, and there have been too many of those (the problem being that none of them are warm enough). Still giving 4 stars for ultimate warmth, though. Having a hard time closing the box to return them, because I'm still so smitten by the combination of materials. ... show more

  • Serious Mittens for Seriously Cold Weather
Size: Medium Color: Black
Several things to note. My hands border M and L on most size charts. I can wear a generous medium, mostly need a large. Based on the other comments which said these run large, I took a chance and got mediums. The last thing I want is an overly snug cold weather mitten or glove. The mediums fit me fine. I'd say if you are a solid large, go with that, but borderline cases like mine, medium was perfect. Next, the liner. I knew it had a trigger (index) finger separate from the rest of the fingers. A guess … they have a single style of insert for both styles of mittens. There is sufficient space in the other finger area to hold all four fingers, no crowding. The index finger cutout doesn't get in the way or cause issues. So happy and relieved about that. Something that was not on the website, the mittens are rated to -40F … which is great. I don't think I'll be using them in that environment, but sub-zero weather is what I'm buying them for … so very happy about that. They are not cheap by any means, they appear to be very well made and I expect many years of (light) use, in some fairly extreme winter conditions that occur occasionally where I live. ... show more

  • if you need good dexterity, you can temporarily take off the mitten ...
Size: X-Large Color: Black
They run large but so what. We're headed to the Arctic and at -45 you do not want tight fitting. You want your hands to have proper circulation, plus the large size allows for a glove liner without making a tight fit with the mitten on. Also, if you buy a secondary glove which is thin, you can add that after the liner and before the mitten. In that way, if you need good dexterity, you can temporarily take off the mitten to do detailed work, then slip them back on. These are serious gloves for a serious environment. Great details, well made, definitely warm. Yes, you lose dexterity but we're more interested in not losing fingers to the elements. Good enough to run a dog sled team. Also, the added room allows for heat packs to be added, if the elements call for it. I will report on how they function while in the Arctic, for the ultimate test (though that would have been with Shackleton but...nobody's perfect!). Oh, and great price compared to $400-700 arctic rated mittens I've seen elsewhere. If you have the time, put the item in your basket on Amazon, then watch the price day by day. For us, it fluctuated between $133 and $219.... Don't know about you but for us...that's a lot of money.... ... show more

  • Excellent warmth
I've bought many pairs of gloves over the years, all promising to keep my hands warm on very cold days doing outdoors activities/chores. Every other glove (fingered or mitten design) eventually lets the cold get through and I end up with very uncomfortably freezing fingers. NOW, these "Black Diamond Absolute Mitts Cold Weather Gloves" really do what they are suppose to do—keep my fingers warm. I was out running the snowblower. Those metal handles are as cold as the outside is. These gloves kept my fingers warm despite grabbing those freezing cold handles for 20+ minutes. These mitts are large but they need to be that way (you gotta expect they might be larger than your normal wimpy gloves that let your fingers get cold). If you are trying to be trendy and styling, these might not fit that purpose, but if you want your hands/fingers to be warm, these are the stuff you want. ... show more

  • Warm hands!
Size: Medium Color: Black
These are awesome. No more cold hands. They are a little awkward with ski poles because the are so big, but not the end of the world if you want want warm fingers!

  • Extremely bulky, the liner has the index finger (3-finger design) and it's all bunched up.
Size: Medium Color: Black
I doubt you could get these through your pole straps. The liner, which is removable, arrived in a bunch and I could not get me hand into the mitt. I had to remove the liner, massage it, tug and pull and put my hand into the liner and back into the mitt. The liner, especially with the thick index finger separated is very bulky and uncomfortable. I suspect that this was a product that was tried on and returned due to the mess it was in when I received it. Even if they were warm, I would not recommend this item due to the liner design and the complication of having to remove the liner, put the liner on, straighten out the bulk and insert it back into the mitt. Perhaps I just received a defective pair. They arrived at my local UPS store where the owner is also shopping warm mitts. We both agreed they are a mess. ... show more

  • Excellent warm gloves for -18F or lower
These gloves are the ultimate for weather that is -18F or lower. The small fit my hands well. The overall exterior size of the gloves are gigantic, so would never do for skiing. The construction and materials are much better and more rugged than I expected.

  • Warm for my cold hands out skiing!
These are the best! I have the coldest hands ever, and I'm normal again when I ski with these! Everyone makes fun of me with my "oven mits" but then I ask about their cold hands and they admit they wish they had my awesome gloves.
