  • This Wood Burning Pizza Oven DELIVERS!!!
Style: Pizza Oven
We love Pizza like most folks, and don't we all have very SPECIFIC preferences? I love a good NY-style traditional pizza, but if it has crust, toppings and some sort of sauce, I'm generally gonna love it. So the ability to MAKE YOUR OWN PIZZAS, well, that's a perfect way to get exactly what you want. Adding the feature of wood-fired, and you add an element of flavor and options that you can't even order from most pizzerias. So we had to get this fine new oven. I love outdoor cooking, especially smoking. A mesquite-smoked steak is a flavor to behold, so a smoked pizza has got to be delicious! And this unit makes it easy! First, it comes nearly fully assembled save for the smokestacks and separate pizza stone. Unfold the legs and set it anywhere outdoors. Now, don't get ready to pop the pizza in out of the box. You must follow a burn-in process to heat it to max and then cool down and wipe it out before using. This can take an hour or so. This unit takes 3 different fuels, wood pellets, charcoal or wood chunks, my favorite. The chunks and the very necessary fire starters are available in different woods like Mesquite, Pecan, Cherry etc. and are very reasonable. You will need a good little stack as this burner box gets hungry. To get that temperature up you have to really goose it with the fuel. It is recommended to use an infrared thermometer to verify the optimum temperature, however before I sprung the 30 to 50 to 100 bucks on one of those I wanted to see if I could wing it. The oven does have a "dummy" temp gage that is basically Low, Med and YOWZA, with food symbols, the pizza being the highest. I figured I would use this for now. So after the burn-in and you have your fire started, prepare your pizza. Pop it in (12" max diameter) on the stone and watch carefully, checking every minute or so. You crank the rotary table to rotate the pie and cook it evenly. It's kind of fun, but be careful, as a 750 deg burn will hurt a bit. I admit I didn't use a thermometer and our first pie was blackened at the edges and bottom. It did NOT taste burnt however, but was absolutely delicious! I have made a few since without the thermometer and they came out fine, it's just a matter of timing. You can cook other foods in this smoky oven, but for now we have a different pizza for lunch every Saturday. This could be fun for a party, but while the pizza typically cooks in 5 or 6 minutes, there is some down time building the fire etc. There are similar ovens on the market for higher and lower prices, but the quality, appearance and results of this oven, along with the trusted Black & Decker name, make this one a good value. ... show more

  • Very effective pizza oven, has some nice QOL features like the stone rotator
Style: Pizza Oven
Our first pizza oven was an off-brand thing that we picked up just to see if we'd like to move forward with our pizza-making fervor in a more serious manner. We'd already become avid homemade pizza makers after buy an industrial-sized bucket of flour and swearing off frozen and delivered pizzas in an effort to save money and make pizzas that were a bit healthier (less salt, fresher ingredients, etc.) Little did we know how much we'd like it. Now, we're at a point where there's not a day in the year where we don't have at least 2-3 pizza's worth of dough in our freezer and probably just as much in our fridge waiting to be turned into a pizza on the fly. Our first pizza oven changed how we look at pizzas, because suddenly we could turn out 5-10 pizzas in about just as many minutes due to how hot they burn and how fast a pizza cooks inside. Seriously it's amazing. Going from 10-15 minutes per pizza in a traditional oven to 1-2 minutes in a pizza oven (depending on how good your pizza rotating and fire stoking skills are) changes everything. You go from having a pizza night with the family to pizza night with 3 or 4 families (friends or relatives) and you've not seen a kid get truly excited about pizza until you give them a chance to actually embrace their wildest "extra cheese" fantasy. ***Biggest Quality of Life Improvement on this Black & Decker model*** I can't stress enough how much being able to rotate the pizza inside with a hand crank instead of having to open it up and use a peel to rotate it. Not only is it easier, but it also saves on heat. If you're making a LOT of pizzas, the hotter you can keep your pizza oven for longer on your original starting fire without having to add more wood pellets is money saved. Once you get the "take a pizza out and put a pizza in" rhythm down, and you just have someone stationed on the lever full-time - your pizzas start looking really great, evenly cooked all around, and the whole process is incredibly streamlined. You can have every one sat down with a pizza in record time. It's fantastic. ***First time cleaning*** As has been noted elsewhere, it's definitely worthwhile to do the first time cleaning of just getting your over up to maximum heat to let it burn off some of the protective measures put on the oven out of the factory, but once you've done that, every subsequent time you heat it up afterwards is a relatively quick phase from starting the fire to reaching cooking temperature. I won't say we'll never use our kitchen oven again for pizza-making, but when the weather is good, we've absolutely been taking advantage of our new and improved pizza oven lifestyle. ... show more
