I bought the 8,500 BTU ASHRAE / 5,000 BTU SACC model. It has performed well in a kids bedroom with full exposure to the afternoon sun. Set at 74°, it has no trouble maintaining that temperature while the temperature outside is well over 90°, even with the bedroom door standing open to the un-cooled 80° hallway. Nameplate rating is 9.0 amps, but it only draws that much at startup. Sustained draw is around 725w/6a, low enough that it would be possible to put a pair of these in two rooms which share an electrical circuit. It's a bit buzzy when running. I have a larger 12,000 BTU Whynter unit in another room and somehow that one is a bit quieter than this B&D unit. It's still a reasonable sound level, doesn't wake up my toddlers when it kicks on in the night or disrupt our bedtime stories. The "auto fan speed" mode that shuts the blower down when the compressor isn't running also is quite nice for some periods of silence, and isn't available on my Whynter. Window kit is thoughtfully designed and easy to assemble. It fit my window nicely using long and short pieces together, not fully extended. The kit also came with some self-adhesive foam weatherstripping for the edges of the window kit, a thoughtful touch. However the provided strips weren't long enough for my install, came up about half a foot short on each side, so it wasn't useful. You'd think if they thought to put it in, they'd put enough for when it's at full extension? The hose attachments at both ends are a good twist-and-lock design that's hard to accidentally pull apart. No storage cover/bags for the off-season, are provided, though. On-unit controls are very sensitive to accidental touch by kids and their toys (or just brushing up against it as you walk by). There's no child lock-out feature, so the only option is to tape a box over the controls. Many features can only be accessed from the remote anyway, and the remote does have a function display, so there's not a lot of downside to blocking the on-unit controls. Would buy again. I'll begin by saying, I am a big fan of Black & Decker products. I have many of their cordless tools, and a cordless self-propelled lawn mower that has been going strong for 11 years on the original battery. When I began my search for portable AC units for my kids' rooms, I came across the B &D models and didn't hesitate to purchase 2. This is now our 2nd season with these units and I have not been disappointed. These units are powerful. When the outside temperature was approaching 100, their rooms stayed a very comfortable 68. Set up was simple. My son's room has a sliding window. The window kit that came with the unit was perfect. We had the AC installed and running in under 5 minutes. My daughter's room has a crank out window, so I purchased the Homee Universal Window Seal to install hers. The window seal took slightly longer to install, but the seal works great! At the end of the season we'll just roll them into their closets until next year. Having had both window and portable ACs, this is about average for noise level. Once the room reaches the desired temperature, the compressor kicks down and it operates pretty quietly. These units are very energy efficient. Prior to purchasing these units, we used window and tower fans to cool their rooms. My electric bill has dropped by about 1/3 since installing these units. In all, I am very satisfied with the units and expect they will serve us as well as the other Black and Decker products we own. ... show more

    • It make a room cold!

It works like a charm to make a room cold. We found that it worked so well that we had to turn the temp up to about 78 degrees or it would make the room too cold. Like any air conditioner it makes a lot of water so we elevated it on a nightstand and drilled a hole to run the upper drain out the window. The lower drain should only make water in cold weather. It makes a lot of water in the houston area as we knew it would. It might fill up a gallon each day. We are using it in an upstairs 300 sqft 2 room arear along with a dehumidifier. Still it makes a lot of water, but that is to be expected here. It does make the rest of the lower rooms much cooler. I chose this because it doesn't suck air in one hose and expel in another. It only blows out the hot air. And that hose does get hot. I think the hose connections could be a little more air tight but overall it works very well and almost too well unless you turn the temperature up. I don't think the noise is any more than a window unit. Seems fine to me while blowing very cold air. ... show more
