I've only had my BLACK+DECKER 17 cu. ft. convertible refrigerator/freezer for a short time, so I want to be fair and describe this as an early review. That said, my experience with it so far has been excellent, and I'm very pleased with my purchase. One of the main things I liked about this model was the flexibility. The entire unit can be used as either a refrigerator or a freezer, rather than being permanently committed to one job. That's a terrific idea because your storage needs can change over time. I may need extra refrigerator space at one point and additional frozen-food storage at another, and I really like knowing that I don't have to buy a completely different appliance if those needs change. The 17 cubic feet of interior space is also quite generous, and because this is an upright design, everything is easy to see and organize. That's something I particularly appreciate compared with a chest freezer, where food can very quickly disappear underneath everything else. Here I have adjustable glass shelves, door storage and a basket, so I can organize things logically and actually find what I'm looking for without digging through layers of frozen food. The frost-free design was another major attraction for me. I've dealt with freezers that gradually turn themselves into little Arctic caves and eventually have to be emptied and manually defrosted, and I have absolutely no desire to go back to that. I also like having electronic temperature control with an LED display rather than relying on a vague numbered dial and wondering exactly how cold the interior really is. I chose the black version, and I think it's a very handsome appliance. The exterior is simple and clean without a lot of unnecessary decoration, and the recessed handle contributes to that uncluttered appearance. For something this large, it doesn't look bulky or overly industrial. Another consideration for me was energy consumption, so I was happy to see that this model is ENERGY STAR certified. A refrigerator or freezer is an appliance that may be operating 24 hours a day for years, so efficiency matters much more to me here than it does with something I only switch on occasionally. Most importantly, though, it has simply done what I purchased it to do. It reached temperature, provides a tremendous amount of usable storage, and so far has been straightforward and uncomplicated to live with. I paid $769.99 for mine, so this was obviously a substantial appliance purchase rather than an impulse buy, but my initial impression is that I received a lot of useful capacity and flexibility for the money. I will certainly update my opinion if anything changes as I live with it longer, but based on my experience so far, I'm extremely happy with it. The ability to choose between refrigerator and freezer operation, combined with the large upright interior, frost-free operation and easy organization, makes this an unusually versatile appliance. **Five stars from me so far. We LOVE this fridge/freezer so much, we bought two. My husband and I were struggling with how much we hated our old fridge/freezer setup. It was small, and had two vertical French-style doors. We couldn’t fit anything because of how small each side was. We were looking at new setups for months, and everything we liked was too big for the fridge space we have in our kitchen, and everything that was the right size was junk. My husband mentioned one day that we could get an industrial style fridge and a separate deep freeze in another area to maximize the space that we do have. I loved the idea, so I set out to find what would work for that. More months of searching, we found a different style single unit that could be set as either a fridge or freezer that we liked and were getting ready to buy, but at that time we were still planning out wedding and got busy and distracted. We had our wedding, and most of our friends and family bought us Amazon gift cards and cash as gifts, so we came to Amazon to buy the other setup, when this appeared on my homepage. It was on sale, and we got an extra discount with our Amazon wedding registry. Even without the regular discount, this one was almost 25% bigger and about $100 cheaper than the one we were looking at. I showed my husband, and we decided to pull the trigger. Delivery was fast and easy, they brought it into our kitchen on our preferred date. We got it in place and plugged in immediately. The temperature control is extremely easy, and within a few hours the fridge was at a crisp 32°. A week later, we bought a second one! Delivery and setup was easy, and again, within a few hours the fridge was at -9°. We’ve had them both for a few months now (we bought in April/May) and we are so happy with our purchases! There is so much space, we almost don’t know what to do with it all. Our wedding cake is rock solid, and I am confident that it will be perfectly preserved for our first anniversary. They are both incredibly quiet, and if you have little at home, you don’t have to worry about sticky finger smudges, as it hides them pretty well. Both units were delivered in perfect condition without any dents or damage, and has held up well with two adults, two dogs, and four cats, who all always seem to be in the kitchen. We are so happy with our purchase and our decision to have single until fridge and freezer spaces. Plug in ready, and nice looking. I placed it in my garage, it was affordable, and good capacity. Amazon delivery of this item was iffy, though I was trying to track it. Ultimately, I saw the driver unloading it, and he took it through my yard to the garage, so all was well.

We're about a year in on this refrigerator and it's great. Would recommend!This is an absolute piece of garbage. We are about 14 months in with this refrigerator, and the icemaker has already broken, as has one of the shelves. It came partially damaged. This is borderline fraudulent and definitely disgraceful.     • Don't Let the Brand Name Fool You - A Great Compact Refrigerator

I'll admit, I was a bit hesitant to buy this refrigerator. I wasn't familiar with BLACK+DECKER as an appliance brand, and there was an unexplained 1-star rating online that gave me pause. However, I rolled the dice because the dimensions were perfect for my small kitchen alcove, and I'm very glad that I did. What I Liked: Perfect for Small Kitchens: The compact footprint is a perfect fit for my small kitchen alcove, where a standard-sized fridge would have been too large. Surprisingly Spacious Interior: This is the most impressive part. Despite being only 16 cu. ft., I was shocked that I could fit everything from my old, much larger 21.3 cu. ft. refrigerator inside. The internal layout is incredibly efficient. Great Features for its Size: The French door design, bottom mount freezer, and built-in ice maker are all features you'd expect on a larger, more expensive model. Quiet Operation: The refrigerator is surprisingly quiet. I barely notice it running, except for maybe a little noise during the initial startup or when the ice maker cycles, which is totally normal. Amazing Value: For the features you get in this compact size, the value at this price point is amazing. It feels like a much more expensive appliance. Sleek Look: The black finish looks modern and sleek in my kitchen. What I Didn't Like: Dim Interior LED Lighting: My only real complaint is that the interior LED lighting isn't very bright. It illuminates the space, but it could definitely be brighter to make it easier to see items tucked away in the back. I put half gallon jugs of water in the door, and within 2 days time they're solid is rock. So this thing really can freeze. Excellent worksmanship. The door assembly is excellent, seals perfectly. Great seal, temperature control and lots of space. Only had it 3 days but it was ready as a freezer after only 3 hrs of start up. The seal is even tighter than my expensive sub zero and I can barely open it. It whistles as the seal closes so you know it is tight. I bought it to replace 3 other smaller box freezers and save electricity. The LED light on the outside of the door does not stay lit all the time, so you have to open the door to see the temperature setting but the control on the outside of the door does work if you want to make adjustments. My only complaint is Amazon did not allow set up or unboxing to my area, so I had to do it myself. ... show more

This refrigerator / freezer combo so far has been great. I have only owned it for a few months but so far it is working perfectly. It does have a good feature that you can switch easily between a refrigerator or deep freezer. Once unboxed and settled it reached freezer temperature quickly even after being out in 90 degree day, in the shipping truck. Make sure you measure, this unit is tall, but based on the space we wanted to place it, it fit perfect with 1/2" to spare. The price was similar, if not cheaper, than some of the other brands we researched. The storage is not bad at 17 cubic ft. We initially had just the storage of a regular refrigerator, but it was inadequate, this gave us the ability to place items on different shelves and not have them buried. Could you bury items? Yes, but its harder in a tall freezer than a chest freezer. you'd have to really over load it. As far as noise while operating, it has a slight low pitch hum but is not noticeable once not standing directly next to the unit.
