  • A fabulous tool with long battery life that makes trimming bushes and hedges a breeze.
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
I have been pruning bushes and hedges in our garden with hand hedge shears since we bought our house 3 years ago. Last year I got the light duty blower in this B&D 36/40v series and have been extremely pleased with it so when I decided to get a power tool to take some of the manual work and time away from gardening during our hot summer days. When I saw there was a cordless hedge trimmer in the same series and even available without the battery I was very interested. In the end I bought it with the battery simply because two batteries are better than one for long jobs and I can always get the wire strimmer in the series without next time. This trimmer is a little over two feet long with all metal construction at the business end. It comes with a hard plastic sheath for protecting you and the blade while in storage. A single battery and charger. I have been using it for about 6 months now, at first I was a little timid because I was afraid it would break. You know how cordless cutting tools used to be. Lack of power easy to burn out. Well this is not the case with this lithium-ion powered one. It easily trims hedges and bushes. I have had it cut through branches in between 1/2 inch and 2/3 inches no problem. The trimmer is not heavy and quite well balanced thanks to lithium ion batteries being quite light weight and at the back to counter the weight of the blade. The controls for this trimmer are simple. A big hand lever to unlock the blade and a switch to turn it on and off. It cuts everything on one or two sweeps no problem. I was surprised at how long the battery lasts because it actually lasts longer than the blower. I haven't actually had to use the second battery in the same session, the one that is in it simply hasn't run out during a session and I leave it charging when not in use. The battery has a power indicator that lights up with LED's to show you the status with the press of a button. The charger has a single green indicator that flashes when charging and I believe includes a trickle charge. Naturally this trimmer is MUCH faster than hand tools, and does a superb job. I can do most of the garden in the time it used to take me to do a single bush. We have a 30' miniature rose hedge separating our front garden from the neighbors. It's so nice to simply hold the trimmer at the desired height and walk down the driveway. One way and back along both sides and you have an level rose hedge that looks nice and tidy. Walk back and forth with long sweeps up from the ground and it is simple to do the sides another couple of trips and you can bevel the top of the hedge and round the edges. It only takes 10 minutes for what was a 2 hour job involving incredibly sharp rose thorns. We have many large bushes and they all take 5-10 minutes each saving me hours. So far my trimming sessions have been between 40 and 60 minutes without the battery running out. So battery life is good. And after several months, it does seem sturdy and reliable. A really nice tool that you can depend on. I liked both the 40v tools I have purchased so far and plan on getting the wire strimmer without a battery to complete the set and keep edges and tall grass on the borders tidy. ... show more

  • Wicked...Wicked Little Beast! Wow!
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
It’s been raining every day here for months and I haven’t been able to get into my 7 acres of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) flower fields and cut the weeds down with a tractor and bush hog. I have to manage the weeds in order to encourage the flowers/forbs to take over as the dominant species. The goal now at this point until next spring, is to control these weeds from “going to seed” and propagating more weeds exponentially next year. But the weather is fighting me. So after attempting to use my weed whacker to cut these weeds down, many of them were much too thick to be successful in cutting them down. Hand tools were too laborious on my carpal tunneled hands. After all... this is 7 Acres! So in a TV commercial, I happened to see someone cutting their hedges and the light went on....OMG, CORDLESS HEDGE TRIMMER!! It didn’t take long and I was on Amazon reading the reviews of people about this little beauty. I’ve boughten so many tools and accessories to do this daunting task that I was excited that this maybe was going to be THE solution for me. The longer it takes me to find a solution, the bigger and bigger the weeds get that I have to slay! They grow 24 hours a day! This thing arrived along with the additional battery I ordered, on the charger they went. I was a building contractor and I’m NO beginner with power tools corded or not. And at first glimpse, you wonder if this fairly lightweight Gar-fish looking thing is going to run very long, or be able to do this tough job....but then you actually look at the by-pass cutting mechanics of it, and really it’s an intimidating machine.. right up there with my chainsaws. The next day the rain stopped, so I put on my chest waders and into the field I went. Keep in mind the weeds are still wet and are now 3-5 feet tall and some of their stalks are the thickness of your thumb. But, This little machine chewed right through ...cutting the weeds as fast as I could sway back and forth. It cuts off an enormous amount of thick tall weeds without even blinking! I got so good at it I could even gain control so well with it in that I could be selective only trimming the weeds out of thick stands of flower stocks snipping weeds with the tip of it. WOW... it ran for an hour until I got chased out of the field by even more rain, and I still had one green bar of power left! My technique had to be utilizing a ton of start/stops just because of the nature of what I have to do in my navigation between weeds and flowers. So the trigger mechanism may be the first to go. But it’s lightweight, easy to maneuver and I can hardly wait to get back out there to continue whacking the weeds down! This is going to make this years crop of monarch butterflies and bees very happy being able to get at their favorite flowers. This thing is terrific. But there is one thing I highly recommend you buy for it. Get a 24” chainsaw blade cover for it to put over the cutting bar when it’s not in use. You’ll save yourself from catching on everything and can safely store it away. It will still cut you badly when you grab it by the teeth. I’m GREAT purchase! I might buy a 3rd battery and never leave my fields! 6 Stars! ... show more

  • Cutting the cords, cordless hedger 40v packs a punch!
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
After my gas hedger quit on me, and after cutting the extension cord twice, I recently switched to this BLACK+DECKER 40V MAX model and it’s a total game changer. The 24-inch blade makes quick work of my large hedges, and the POWERDRIVE transmission actually handled branches nearly 3/4-inch thick without stalling. It’s surprisingly lightweight compared to the gas monster I had, so my arms didn't get fatigued even after 45 minutes of trimming. The battery life is impressive. I was used to the gas engine sound and the revving engine, so don’t let the quietness fool you into thinking it’s not doing it job. I finished my entire front and back yard on a single charge with power to spare. If you're tired of tangling with extension cords, and mixing gas this is the perfect upgrade. Of course this is for residential use so don’t go storing your gas unit away if you’re the neighborhood lawn care guy. ... show more

  • Powerful, fast charger, lightweight, does an excellent job! Read on...
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
I paid $122.35 just 6 days ago, amazing how the Amazon prices fluctuate. OK, only 4 stars now because I just got it and I've only used it today. But, I'm VERY impressed! I have hedges that go completely around my house and they needed trimming. I used to use my B&D 18V Hedge Trimmer which served me well for 9 years. That is damn good service, so that's why I chose to stay with B&D. (I had purchased a Ryobi 18V Hedge Trimmer, but the handle broke the first day I used it! It went back to Home Depot, very disappointed in Ryobi for this tool) So... with a fully charged battery, I went out and tackled my hedges. I am HAPPY!! I went thru the entire front of the house, plus a big batch of hedges in a landscaped circle. It completed all of that with no problem. It did better than me, I was sweating and ready for a break. The battery had one light left of the 4-light charge indicator. So I put the battery back on it's charger and went out to clean up my trimmings. About 45 minutes later I was done cleaning up my clippings. (I just run over them with my riding mower. It mulches them up nicely, no problems!) So I go check the battery... it shows fully charged! Awesome!!! The charger really is a FAST CHARGER. So I placed the battery back in and tackled the north side of the house. It trimmed them easily, no problems whatsoever. The trimmer blades both move, so it's like it scissors thru the branches as it cuts. I was impressed at how easily it trimmed my hedges, much easier than my old 18V trimmer. It trimmed the hedges on the north in about 20 minutes, just breezed thru them. When I was doen I checked the battery charge indicator, it still showed I had a full charge! WOW, this thing is good. Better than me... I put the trimmer away and raked all the clippings into the yard, then I mowed them over with my riding mower again. I was hungry, so I'm inside now, eating chili and writing this review. (I love chili!) So, 4 stars out of 5, but only because it needs more longevity testing. Yes, it's an awesome trimmer today. Give me a year to see if it continues to perform this well. The battery charger is labeled a FAST CHARGER, and it says it's safe to leave it on the charger when the battery is fully charger, it switched to a "maintain" mode and doesn't cook your battery to death. This is good, glad to see they're getting smarter about providing smart chargers that don't kill expensive batteries. If you need to replace your old 18V yard tools, I highly recommend this 40V trimmer. I passed over the 20V systems because this 40V tool came with a fast charger and a battery that gives twice the run-time of a 20V system. If you add the fast charger to a 20V trimmer you end up at just higher than the price of this 40V trimmer! Don't waste money on a 20V, go up to the 40V trimmer. Very impressive, powerful trimming, fast charger, light weight, and delivered by Amazon to your front door!! Go ahead, go for it!! Enjoy... ... show more

  • Surprised me!! (updated)
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
Well, I had a corded one for a while. I "cut the cord" accidently. It was always a pain to drag the cord around, and you had to have more than one. The cost of the trimmer plus two good cords adds up. I say this, with a trimmer, charger, and battery are not to far from the same price. I choose this brand because of the price range. There is another out there but it was twice the cost, (although a great unit). For my first all electric, I choose this one. It comes in a large cardboard box, and within it, is another holding the unit. Easy to remove, and not much too it. The battery was partially charged, but I went ahead and charged it. The set up instructions were confusing, saying to add screws here and their, but everything was already assembled. I used it for the first time yesterday. I actually read the instructions. The main thing to remember is to keep the battery charged, (saves battery life and the efficiency of the battery). I used it on a LONG row of hedges. The first thing I noticed that I didn't have to unstrand TWO lengths of extension cords and drag them around so I can do the job. All I did was ensure the battery was charge, slap the battery in, and off to work I go. Even with the battery, it was not heavy, a little light. The blade length and performance were far superior to my old one. I was trimming for about an hour when I finished, and still had a charge left. It advertises 3/4 inch max cut, and this did close to that, but I would not push it. I did clean it , and is was NOT hot when I put it away. I would recommend this, and if not this one just the principle of a battery charged one. SOOOOO much easier and more efficient then the wired up one. We will see how long it lasts. Bought this in 2000, it is now DEC 2022. Still works as if new. Bought a second battery, which is perfect for my use. Has never failed, still sharp, still trims the hedges. ... show more

  • "Go To" Trimmer -- Real Deal!
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
This trimmer is the real deal -- impressive! I have three properties that require hedge trimming. One home takes about 8 hours of work which includes trimming & bagging for over 200 shrubs (holly, boxwoods, azalea & yew). I have a weak shoulder and didn't want to use a gas powered trimmer due to weight. I did significant research and decided on the Black & Decker. mainly based on reviews and number of sales. I also ordered an extra battery as I knew I would need the extra source of power and didn't want to wait. I charged both batteries night before my first use The initial battery lasted just over 60 minutes of continuous action -- the blades were sharp and handled holly bushes over 1/2 inch thick -- breezed through them. After the first battery ran down, I placed it on the charger and then utilized the second battery to continue work. The second battery also lasted just over 60 minutes of continuous use. I then began bagging the clippings (ended up with about 15 leaf bags full of clippings). The batteries took about 2 hours to fully charge; but was ready by the time I had finished the initial bagging. In all I needed 3 fully charged batteries to finish the job for over 200 shrubs. The trimmer operated at full power up until the final 5 minutes or so, when you could tell that the trimmer was slowing a bit -- also very impressive as well. This trimmer was the real deal for me. So much so my nephew who also does some trimming for two houses need a new one, so I bought him one as well. I haven't written many reviews, but so impressed with this product I had to write. The Black & Decker is light, easily maneuvered and made quick work of shrubs beyond my expectation -- worked perfectly for me -- saved my shoulder as well. I also used some Kevlar gloves just in case a finger might find it's way too close to the sharp blades (never did but safety first and safety always)! The Real Deal! ... show more

  • Nice trimmer - no cord - price is fair.
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
This is a great hedge trimmer! The order was received on time and early enough in the day that I was able to charge the included battery while I did the one bit of assembly required; putting on the handle guard which required removing two screws, installing the guard, and putting the screws back in. I did have to use my own Phillips screwdriver as Black and Decker didn't include one. (I wasn't expecting one however!) When the battery was charged (about one hour) I placed the battery on the trimmer. It didn't "click" into place initially, but after a few minutes I was able to secure the battery properly and headed to my privet hedge to test out the new trimmer. Here's my list of PROS and CONS: PROS ' Lightweight (even the wife was pleased with that) ' Fast charge for the battery ' Battery size is significantly smaller than my 48-volt Toro trimmer battery AND is easier to install and remove from the trimmer. ' Great value and a fair price. ' Housing is heavy-duty and overall construction is solid. ' 24" blade makes quick work of the hedge! ' Fairly quiet to operate. ' Trimmer is well-balanced. CONS - Initial installment of battery proved to be a little tedious. Would I buy this trimmer again? It's really too early to say - I've only used it for about 45 minutes. But in that 45 minutes I did what before today took me almost 2 hours! My initial rating then is 5 stars. This is quality tool that I will be using more frequently. Buy it, I think you'll be satisfied too. ... show more

  • WHY did I wait so long to get one of these???
Style: 40V Hedge Trimmer Kit
I have put off reviewing this trimmer because I wanted to really use it a lot so I knew exactly what to write. In short: this trimmer is LIBERATING! For years, my family used a corded trimmer. The amount of time spent hauling out the extra long cords, the anger that accompanies the use of said cords, and the sheer danger of tripping over the cords, and cutting right through the cords... well, you can see why I finally bit the bullet and ordered this CORDLESS trimmer. We have hedges all along the sidewalk in front of the house, and assorted bushes around the foundation. I can now get them all trimmed in a fraction of the time, and without worrying about the battery running down. I can now start the thing up, walk along the front hedges, and get a nice, even cut all down the sidewalk... without tripping over a cord! I highly recommend this trimer to anyone with lots of cutting to do. One day this summer I did our house, then went down the street and did everything at my boyfriend's house. The battery still had a lot of charge left. The only issue is if you are really out of shape and/or short, you may get a bit tired trying to reach way up to the top of an overgrown bush... trust me, I know... The blades are larger and better quality than our old one's, and way sharper. It also cuts some impressively large evergreen branches. So, good battery life, quick recharger, no cords, good quality... how can you miss? I no longer question spending the money on a higher-end trimmer, and I also do not regret going with battery vs. gas. My only suggestion is that you spray some WD40 onto the blades between use. This may not be an issue in warm, dry areas, but in New England, it can help slow corrosion, as well as offer lubrication. ... show more
