For background I'm a woman in my 40s, and was able to install this completely by myself in a few hours. The bed came in 4 huge very heavy boxes. I needed someone to help lift them into my house and in an adjoining room to where I wanted to install the bed. It is well packed with lots of cardboard and styrofoam surrounding the items. Nothing was damaged in transit. The material is particleboard, but very thick and study and when assembled it looks nice and is better quality than I was expecting. I have children and was worried about them being able to open it themselves, but the handles are high up, and requires adult strength to pull open and hold up while moving supporting bar around the mattress, my very strong 8 year old could not do independently. I was nervous to put this together by myself based on the reviews, but the directions were simple and easy to follow and required minimal tools. I used the mattress I had purchased to hold the bed open when required (while still in box), a second person was not actually necessary for anything other than lifting the boxes inside my home. I was also nervous about the mattress fitting and the 10 inch pillow top that I purchased fits with ease under the supporting frame. I do not think a thicker mattress will fit, however. Because I installed it on carpet I have to plane the bottom molding as it pops off when I open the bed due to the carpet height underneath. This is a nice looking, sturdy murphy bed. It's also massive and takes some strength and skills to assemble. It came in 4 boxes, both large and heavy. The delivery guy helped me enter them in the room (which has a door on the driveway) otherwise it would have been already a problem. Overall it took me several days (not continuous) mostly by myself. A skilled and strong person can assemble it alone. Another person help in a couple of point doesnt hurt. Be aware that the instructions call for anchoring on the wall (against studs) AND on the floor (both on the floor itself and at the base of the wall). The problem with anchoring at the base of the wall is that the holes in the metal frame are pre-drilled, so if the holes are not (they won't be) corresponding to a stud and you do not have masonry or wood there you are out of luck. I opted to install just on the wall and the floor, and I think it should be enought. The final assembly of the doors is the most complicated part because the instructions are nor very detailed and because you have to drill and anchor the doors without knowing where they will actually be positioned. On customer service, I needed help with the instructions and a missing minor piece (one of the slats): in both case I was able to speak to the manufacturer's representatives (number provided) and they were able to explain what wasn't clear and send the replacement part free of charge (they actually sent 2). It's not everyday that you can speak to live person, so that's a strong quality point. TLDR: nice and sturdy but assembly is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced. ... show more

This bed is beautiful. It took us some time to put together, due to instructions not very good. Once it was put together it is so beautiful. We have received so many compliments on it. If looking for a Murphy bed I highly recommend this one.

    • Great KIt - Worth the Money

Please read other reviews about installation. What I will say is that I am a middle-aged woman and I live alone. I was intimidated by the other reviews that said assembly was complex and needed two people, so I hired a handyman duo to install, they messed it up so badly that I had them leave after a day and half of listening to them curse, drill, and break things. I was pretty dejected about the whole thing. I had another 2 handymen come look and not be sure that they could fix it. Well I decided to disassemble what the idiot crew had done and start from scratch. I was able to assemble and install the bed completely by myself, all it takes is attention to the DETAILS IN THE INSTRUCTIONS. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND DON'T HIRE A MAN TO DO IT - they think they're smarter than the instructions. Other than having to replace hardware that my hired "help" broke, I only had one issue. When you are adjusting the height level of the leveling feet, do not adjust too much or the bed won't close flush with the top of the structure. I didn't realize this until the door panels were on, so I had to take the panels off and basically go back to the steps prior to piston install, lower the leveling feet, re-re-install the frame, and voila, the front panel clears the top of the bed structure. There is approx. 1 1/16" difference in height between the metal from and the wood door panels, so keep that in mind when you are at Step 22 To Close the Metal Base. This step is to ensure that the metal closes correctly and is in alignment, but keep in mind your clearance needs to account for the wooden panels. The instructions don't point this out, and there is no troubleshooting guide. My only other advice is that if you are going to assemble and install by yourself, you will need something fairly heavy (50 lbs or so), to hold the bed open while you install the slats. Enjoy the bed, and if you are average intelligence or more, you should be able to do this by yourself if you follow instructions. Best of luck! (Will try to upload pics, however that may be more complex than bed assembly since I am over the age of 40 :)) I love this bed, it is functional, and good quality for the price point. ... show more
