I should start by saying I haven't owned a lot of vises - I'm comparing this to a Harbor Freight vise I bought about 20 years ago. And here's how it compares: for $80.00, this thing isn't half the vise that the $25.00 HF one was! This thing has tolerances you could drive a truck through! Other reviewers mentioned the base is loose - yup, it's loose all right - when unlocked it can slide about 1/4" in any direction! Nothing is tight on this vise. The acme screw that closes it is not straight, so when you turn the handle the jaws move around. It also isn't nearly as solidly built as the HF one - some parts are less than half the thickness! The vises are comparable sizes by the way, it's not just that the HF one is bigger. I think I'm being a little generous giving it two stars - but it'll hold stuff and hopefully not break if I treat it with kid gloves. But as soon as I have a few extra bucks, I'll be looking on Craigslist for a good solid used American-made vise that I can probably get for about the same money and could crush this thing (I bought this because I needed it quickly). BTW re the "American-made": my HF vise was Chinese like this one presumably is, but was still twice as good. ... show more

I needed a new vise for my workbench. I also needed something that will allow me to work with irregularly shaped pieces from time to time, so a multipurpose vise was in order. I did some looking around the the Bessey seemed to have the best features for the money with other multipurpose vises running over $200. 5" opening, 3" depth is big enough for most anything for me. This vise is made in China, but is well machined and smooth. I knocked off one star because the base is rather loose while turning it, but is fine when tight. My only other concern is breaking it because it is unknown if parts of it are cast iron or cast steel. See picture uploaded to photos. Decent vise for the price! ... show more

Seems to be well cast and well machines. Like the flip arrangement for the jaws. Very handy for pupes, etc.

    • They changed the design…
Apart from arriving damaged (it basically rubles around in its box) from the manufacturer…the screw used to operate the vise was drilled with a pin to keep it in place. Completely weakens the vise. It used to have a counter screw and locking nut. Cost savings =lesser quality product. Returned.

This is a good little vise. It is not the best one you might of ever had but it is a good vise. For the money I would tell a friend to buy one or if I ever need another I would buy another one of them.

    • Cheap tools! Be forewarned!
The seller's add made it seem like this was a new offering. But, After I saw it was just an old one with a back order, I read buyer reviews and realized it is not only an old listing, but it is an inferior product. Sadly I learned this too late to block shipment, and I notified UPS that I will refuse delivery, and why. Maybe the vendor will discontinue handling such low-quality junk. ... show more

This vice is perfect for a man's garage. Good size, has the ability to grab pipe, has a nice anvil flat, opens wide. As Groundskeeper Willy might say, "If it weren't against the laws of man and nature, I'd marry this thing, and it would nay complain--only hold mah work and beer on top, if need be."
