  • A lovely piece of sewing technology - but, no it does NOT have auto thread tension
I bought the Bernette b77 to replace my Brother ST371HD. I was reluctant to switch brands, since that would mean learning a new machine and routine, but I had simply outgrown the Brother and I wanted something nicer and more versatile. The Bernette b77 definitely fits the bill. Features-wise, the b77 is pretty packed. The only thing it doesn't have, that was on my wish-list, is automatic thread tension. There were a couple other machines I was looking at in this price point that did have that feature, but they were missing several features that this machine has. The programmable foot pedal, the large workspace, and all the settings and functions make this machine a dream to use. I'm finding the display screen fairly intuitive, though I have had to Google a few things, since I've never used a Bernette or a Bernina machine. I love the automatic thread cutter, and all the fun stitches. I love that I can adjust the maximum speed, and the dual feed - it's made keeping my layers together, so much easier! The needle threading is pretty awesome, too, and definitely easier than my previous machines. My only real complaint is that the securing stitches don't secure well. I still have to back stitch at the beginning and end if I want to be sure the seam will stay in tact (some of my seams that I didn't back stitch started to unravel, so I had to go back and fix them). Since I'm used to doing that, anyway, it's not much of a hardship. I've completed my first project on my new b77 and I couldn't be happier with how it all came together. I'm definitely happy with my purchase. ** To address the other reviewer, the thread tension setting she mentioned is not what I was talking about. Some machines will auto set the thread tension based on the thickness of fabric being sewn. This machine, as lovely as it is, does not do this. The setting the other reviewer mentioned is a 'default' thread tension. Also, since I read the manual when I bought the machine, I am aware of how to program the secure stitch, and I did just that before ever using the machine. My projects need strong seams and the secure stitch is simply not secure enough. Your mileage may vary. ... show more

  • Buyer Beware - Faulty Motor
I bought this machine to us at quilt retreats. I bought it in March and have been to two retreats, during the second retreat I noticed it started taking longer for it to start. I started getting an error message and it won't let me sew at all. The error message is the main motor is not running. I believe this machine has a faulty motor. I have tried multiple times to contact the company Top Notch via their contact us on their website and no one ever responds. I paid a $1000 for a machine I’ve used twice and is totally unusable. I tried to contact Bernina and they keep telling me someone will contact me. Supposedly there’s a 10 year warranty on this machine but no idea how to get someone to respond. ... show more

  • Customer Service solved my issue!
I did my research. Having owned a Viking for 20 years, I was looking for "Continuous or Dual Feed". The price point was desirable. However, the tension has been a FAIL with this machine. BUT, I have been treated with respect and concern by the seller. They walked me through a possible fix on my machine. When that didn't work, they offered to send me a NEW machine! As a business owner, I know that things go wrong sometimes. The real TEST is how you handle your customers when it does. I heartily change my review from a 1-Star to a 5-Star!!! ... show more

  • Great Machine for the Price!
Made a decision to sell my Bernina 580 and replace it with this Bernette 77. I was a bit hesitant after placing my order if I could be satisfied with this model, since I am used to all the bells and whistles. I was surprised by its size when I opened the box The table it comes with is actually longer than the one i had before. It’s every bit the same size.. weighs slightly less though. No other machine comes even close to all it can do for the price point! It’s a powerful machine. And the best part is I have $$$ in my pocket!! ... show more

  • Missing parts
The machine came today missing the needle threader right out of the box.

  • Uneven tension and weak automatic threader mechanism
I really wanted to love this machine. I've been quilting and sewing for a little over 10 years and I bought this machine when my secondhand 30+ year-old Viking Husqvarna blew the electrical foot pedal and I couldn't find a replacement pedal, so I thought I would "upgrade." Right off the bat, the machine was extremely loud turning on. When I received it, it had tension problems that could not be resolved by adjusting the tension on the machine. After multiple support calls, they instructed me to turn the screw on the bobbin case and test sew until the tension improved. It got better, but the tension is still not perfect. They even told me that with a machine of this quality, I wouldn't have perfect tension and should buy a higher-end Bernina. Now, 8 months in, the automatic needle threader broke. First, it stopped threading. I thought it was a fluke, so I rethreaded the machine and tried again. Still wouldn't thread. Turned off the machine and replaced my needle thinking maybe that was the issue. Still didn't work. After trying a few times, the needle threader stopped staying in a down position so I can't even attempt to thread it that way. I guess I have to find a repair shop. (Yes, I know that the machine still works for sewing, but once you've used an automatic needle threader you can't go back!) The worst part is, I haven't even used the machine much as I've been busy (but I did buy all the accessories in my early excitement). If it's already falling apart, either I got a lemon or it's a bad machine. Wish I stuck with Viking. Note: There are also things I like about the machine, like the automatic buttonhole stitches, but all the computerized models have those these days. ... show more
