    • disappointed, doesn't work
I was really excited about this machine, I watched all the videos I could find on it, and read any reviews I could get my hands on. Sadly, after unboxing, I discovered the handwheel doesn't turn. The joint inside, that moves the needle up and down is obstructed by another metal component making it impossible to rotate. What was also peculiar is that the boxes the machine came in were not damaged at all; and, it came with the standard test fabric showing that the stitches were tested. But, I have no idea how/when they could have been tested because the machine literally doesn't run (either by the turning of the handwheel or pressing the foot pedal- the machine just makes a buzzing sound). I have no idea who's to blame but I was really disappointed and kind of frustrated, because of the anticipation and expectation that I'd get a new machine in working order. I requested a replacement, so fingers crossed I don't get another machine that doesn't work. ... show more

    • Nice Machine for the Price
Purchased this machine and received it on January 18th, and so far have experienced no problems with it. My stitches are perfect, it threads easily and is simple and easy to operate; The booklet that comes with it has only picture instructions, but you can go to the Bernette website and download a detailed PDF instruction manual, which I did and which was really helpful. It's a solid machine, easy to use, and perfect for the type of sewing I do - it's what I expected it to be and I'm very satisfied with it. ... show more

I am in love with machine. It's my first new one in 50 years and I'm in awe! No needless bells, whistles and computerization. Simply great sewing! Only drawback is small throat but it seems like its no problem, for me yet!

This little sewing machine is easy to learn. I chose not to buy an electronic sewing machine. I just don’t care for them. This is a much less expensive version of the Bernina that I previously owned. It is very fast and has several different stitches. I really like it.

    • Bernette B05 is a good value purchase
The B05 is affordable and you get a lot for your money. The one downfall is to get a complete manual one must go online. A quick start booklet came with the machine, but it is not enough to really learn all the functions. A very good machine for beginner and advanced sewers alike.

    • Bernette 05 Academy (Best Value) vs. Singer HD vs. Necchi Q132A
I have a Singer HD sewing machine, but I was interested in the Bernette 05 Academy to teach my young son to sew/quilt because it’s simple, mechanical only, and speedy (1100 SPM) and also has safety features such as a finger guard around the needle/presser foot (removable) and a slower speed setting (until he’s ready to move up to its 1100 SPM). I took a chance on a “renewed” version to save some money. The sewing machine appeared to be new and sewed perfectly right out of the box. I’m impressed. It’s a bit quieter and smoother than my Singer HD. It has a blanket stitch that’s good for appliqué as well as a couple of other stitches that aren’t available on my Singer HD. It has 2 LED lights including one over the bed of the machine. The foot pedal cord is longer (for those who complain about the short Singer HD foot pedal cord, including me). It’s compact. Sturdy. And it came with a nice extension table and lots of presser feet and other accessories (no quarter inch presser foot with guide or walking foot, but those can be purchased separately). I plan to decorate it with some fun decals and stickers for my son. I still like my Singer HD (1100 SPM). I also own a Necchi Q132A sewing machine (1000 SPM), which is similar to the Singer HD with the exact same stitch selections and comes with an extension table like the B05. You can’t go wrong with any of these three heavy duty mechanical sewing machines. For the money (especially if you can find a good deal), I think the B05 is the best value with its “Bernina” style extension table, 2 LED lights, 12 presser feet and other accessories, 1100 smooth stitches per minute, 2 different speed settings, finger guard (removable), etc. As far as durability, only time will tell. So far so good for all three. The better question is which of these sewing machines would I buy again if for some reason I lost all three. Easy. The Bernette 05 Academy. ... show more

    • Buttonhole function totally useless
I thought this machine was decent for the price at first. It's a bit noisy and clunky compared to my old machine, but for a lower-priced machine I wasn't expecting it to be amazing. I find the "auto" threader totally useless; it's way easier to just thread it manually because the mechanism is fiddly and requires a lot of maneuvering to get it into the right position. The worst part is the buttonhole maker totally doesn't work. I have it set up exactly as instructed and it malfunctions every time. I have searched for help online but Bernette is supremely unhelpful and just recommends taking it into a technician for repair. It's only a couple months old! I really wish I had sprung for a more expensive and more reliable machine. ... show more
