Two days in pajamas listening to the rain in this Midwest deluge, a cup of tea at my side, ignoring the dishes in the sink, the dust bunnies procreating under the furniture, and the cats meowing to be fed. But I couldn't put it down. I've had a love affair with Otis since 2016, when the intolerable curmudgeon first appeared in the series. But then I seem to be drawn to red flags. In this lovely prequel, I love how the humble, insecure man-child ready to jump from the window of the purple bus turned into an insufferable neurotic, pompous snob-- still insecure and loveable. I’ve always adored damaged characters. They’re like an Outback Blooming Onion (chain reference notwithstanding). Peeling them from their core is an all-sensory experience. I've been a fan of Boo Walker since reading his Red Mountain Chronicles, so I was really looking forward to his origin story about Otis Till. And I was not disappointed. The story is engrossing, relatable, with characters that leap off the page and grab your heart. The writing is crisp and doesn't drag. Too often I read books that start out great, but towards the end give the feeling that the author has become bored with the story or is running up on a deadline and suddenly wraps the book up in a hurried manner. I'm crying. I just finished reading the last words and I'm seriously crying. Sadness and joy crash together. Before We Say Goodbye is an incredible story by a master storyteller, Boo Walker. I read the Red Mountain series years ago and was fascinated to dive into the backstory of Otis Till and the life he lived that went on to create the Red Mountain stories. This intense love story, filled with surprising connections, so much family drama, conflict, acceptance, loss. This story, these characters will stay with me for a lifetime. The writing is excellent, the struggles feel real, the book moves quickly. I obviously loved it and hope others are as moved as I am! ... show more

If someone has never read one of Boo Walkers books, they have been missing amazing stories. I read my first book by Boo a year ago. Here are the other ones I have read: Stars Don’t lie An unfinished story A marriage well done A Spanish sunrise Red Mountain Red mountain rising Red mountain burning “The Secrets of good people” The singing trees There isn’t one I wouldn’t give more than 5 stars if I could. The main character in this new release is Otis. After reading the Red Mountain series, I wished I could know more about Otis as a young man. Now I do. Boo Walker, is indeed a storyteller with this trip through time. “Before We Say Goodbye” is the story about Otis and is one of his most creative. His research and knowledge about winemaking from rootstock to the table is amazing. This is a story about love, relationships and so much more. I enjoyed Otis and Rebecca’s journey to Red Mountain because I see Red Mountain, the Horse Heaven Hills and Sunset Road each day from my house. Their vision for this area is yet to be a reality but vineyards and gorgeous wineries are populating the AVA. This book makes me want to reread the Red Mountain chronicles again. ... show more
